Idea for anyone interested. I was helping my daughter build a scenic view for her school project. I used a kid from this company…. ( BTW: thank you guys for making this stuff. As a traditional oil painter and artist… I had the most fun I’ve had in years playing with this stuff and went WAAAYYYYY too deep in time and mind playing with it for a simple school project…) We ran out of the water medium pretty fast. Knowing this. I used all kinds of tricks I’ve learned over the last 30 years to stretch it . Where we came up short was the waterfalls . We used cotton mixed with water medium to make the torrent water at the bottom of the falls. Once tacky. You can flip and twist the cotton soaked material to make the most realistic water foam. We used wire and rope to make the most realistic trees I’ve ever seen let alone made. And a bunch of other small things around the house and garage to complete this project. Remember, though this company has damn near everything , but Dont forget to have fun with it and experiment with anything you can to make it better . Fake flower foam for making arrangements at home ( sold at Michael’s and home improvement stores with gardening areas ). These make the best mountains you can create. Use this as the base. It’s cheap and limitless. Then coat with plaster and start the process:)

Scenic Glue (S190) is multi-purpose white glue. It is a high-tack adhesive that stays flexible. Dries clear with a matte finish. It does not crack or turn yellow, and is water-soluble. Use for attaching landscape materials. The flexible feature keeps landscape materials from feeling stiff after glue dries. Hob-e-Tac Adhesive (S195) is multi-purpose adhesive that stays tacky. Goes on white and dries clear. When clear, adhesive becomes (and remains) tacky. Water-soluble. Use for attaching Foliage to Tree Armatures and Field Grass to layout. Hope this is helpful!

I liked the video, I like working with woodland scenics products. The prices are way out there and what competition that there is makes it easy for them to up their prices as well. Model Rail roading product have gotten to the point where only rich old men can get into the hobby. It's not for children anymore and of the few that are lucky enough to acquire the items necessary, they more than likely don't have a father around long enough during the week to enjoy the modeling process with them.

This video was actually very helpful, despite the fact that I work in a much larger scale. I do have to say though that I was very disappointed when I tried using Realistic Water. My little pond looked amazing, or would have, but for some reason it made my clear drying glue (which I used to glue the rocks and such to the bottom of the pond) turn white again! I fixed what I could with a murky-muddy layer of paint, and added another coat of the the water. After about a week of dry time (because it was a bit thick), I put my little swan on top to finish the scene. That was apparently a terrible idea. The swan sank through the water, and was essentially glued in place. I had to pry it out, ruining not only the water, but the entire base. Needless to say, the whole piece ended up in the trash, and I'll be doing something else the next time I need a water scene.

One thing to keep in mind about railroad vs Gaming scenery, one is meant for display and the other is meant to be used on a tabletop. Though many of the design principles for war gaming terrain come from railroad and similar hobbies, they don't always hold up so well when used for gaming. Just my experience. They do look amazing though.
@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 10 жыл бұрын
Shiznaft Hello. Wanted to touch base with you and let you know that many of the gamers we have worked with do use our products to make scenery along with a sealing technique they developed to make realistic scenery that can withstand the heavy use it gets from war gaming...They use Minwax Polycrylic by diluting 4-parts Minwax with 1-part water, and applying the solution with a common household sprayer.Spray as many times as desired, letting it dry between coats. Also, we are releasing two new products within the next couple of months that were designed for heavy-use terrain. One is Shaper Sheet, a material that forms to any shape, holds its shape without requiring any understructure and is designed to mechanically bond with plaster. We also developed a plaster called Super Strength Plaster that dries very hard and strong. It resists water absorption and can be used for outside statuary and building terrain for R/C obstacles. It would work great for gaming terrain. We unveiled these at iHobby Expo in October, and the dealers/gamers that attended the show were extremely enthusiastic about the products. You can see these products on our website under New Products and we also have a Shaper Sheet demonstration video posted to our channel. Thanks for your interest!

***** Hey, Guys. Thanks for the great information. In fairness I have been using Woodland Scenics products in my gaming pieces for years. Please don't take my prior comment as a disparagement, quite the contrary. I am a big fan. I was only suggesting that the techniques used to produce the amazing RR terrain in this video are not always the best for gaming. I do use your products and techniques in producing terrain for gaming. They do hold up well depending on application. I haven't tried Minwax. I will keep an eye out for your new products, they sound awesome. I look forward to new videos from you guys. Thanks again.
@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 10 жыл бұрын
Shiznaft Oh no...we in no way took your comments as disparaging! Your observation was absolutely right on! Gaming scenery does require special attention to application and sealing because it is used, not just displayed. Just wanted to let you know the technique gamers had taught us and to let you know about the new upcoming products. We keep you all in mind when developing scenery products and work to figure out ways in which you can use them in combination with other products to make them more durable! Thank you so much for your comments. We totally appreciate them! Happy Modeling!

Say, while I have you on the net... As a professional model builder, I have gone thru an awful lot of WS products over the years! People might forget (or be too young to remember) that WS was the first company to provide a comprehensive range of model scenery materials. Before that it was a real challenge to find good materials and colors from a number of different companies. I've made hundreds of is trees, and the only product I would change, or at least provide a second version of, is Poly Fiber. We stretch it extremely thin over wire armatures, which we then spray glue and sprinkle with WS ground foam "grass." But as it is made in a bright green color, it never disappears the way it could were it made dark brown or black. What do you think of a "disappearing" dark version of Poly Fiber?
@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 10 жыл бұрын
Hello Carmium, Based on what you are describing, I think this is a great idea. I will send it on to our Product Development department for consideration. They like to know what modelers are looking for in the way of new scenery products. I am sure they will find this suggestion interesting! Thank you for being a loyal customer of WS throughout the years, and hope you have many more years of Happy Modeling in your future!

@NevadaSmith2 9 жыл бұрын
Here are a few things I've learned to enhance the ***** Tree System: 1) I apply a thin webbing of poly fiber using Ailene's Tacky Glue (similar to Hobb-E Tac) to the armature. Let dry. 2) I spray the whole tree w/ applied poly fiber with Floquil Grimy Black, and then a dust of Rail Tie Brown 3) I pull off the stock tree base, and glue about a 1" long thin metal tubing over the plastic "stub". This can the be pressed into your scenery foam. The WS Premium trees have a nail instead of this "stub & base", the metal tubing works just as well. 4) I then spray hair spray over the poly fiber, and first apply coarse ground foam from the bottom, then re-spray, and apply from the top. Repeat this step as many time as necessary to achieve desired look. 5) Dust with other fine ground foam to enhance color. Re-spray with hair spray.

***** Thanks for the tips, Noah. Since we typically have to provide, say, "24 poplars in ⅛" scale" or "60 1:120 boulevard trees" for a model we normally make our own armatures. But I do like using Alene's glue and hairspray (I always send someone for the cheapest "unscented, all day, thermonuclear hold" they can find), but I haven't sprayed the Polyfiber dark, and I like that idea. Of course, we'd both like it better if WS made dark brown or black Polyfiber in the first place. I wonder how that's going. Woodland Scenics; you listening?

Woodland Scenics. You can use the fiber from new pillows to create great looking waterfalls. One pillow can make like 600 waterfalls, ha, ha. When I made my lighthouse lamp I used some of your products & some fibers from a pillow to make my ocean by the lighthouse where little folks are seen fishing. I used your snow mixed with a yellowish onion spice & some salt for sand. A lady said she wishes she could be small to be able to walk around & dip her feet into the water & go up into the lighthouse. I got interested in making little houses as a small child when my parents took me to see Roadside America on how they made models & things. They had a town & mountains homes & trains & they would dim the lights in the room & you could see it like it really was night time. Your trees & grasses ect. help to finish my dollhouses that I make look like you'd like to live in that neighborhood. Thank you so much! The last house I sold was a copy of the Lizzy Burden home & barn. You could slide the outside wall off to get into the house. Your trees & shrubs & goodies made it look like you'd have to water the plants & garden.

When I started out we didn't have wonderful videos like yours & others to teach us how to do projects, now we do. I hope it's alright that I have given your web/&info on how to contact your company out. Cause you not only teach, but also provide the products to do the things we want to do which makes things so much easyer!!!! I just sold a small town that had a working 'movie theater' in it. 😊 I used a DVD player hidden in the base & a cut out above it where you open put you CD in & start it. You take the roof off & lift the inside part of the theater out, then pop in the CD & put the inside theater part back, when you take off the roof you can see the 'folks' watching the show. Your products have made my lighthouse lamp water & things look so real that a lady said she wishes she could be small & walk a round & touch the water. Can't get better than that! Realistic water: Is there a recommended maximum depth when applying, to avoid cracking? I'm wondering if it needs to be built up in layers? And how long to dry between layers if so please?
@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 10 жыл бұрын
The overall maximum depth that we recommend pouring Realistic Water (C1211) is ½”. This depth should be achieved by pouring the Realistic Water in 1/8” increments and letting each layer cure thoroughly before applying the next layer, which is typically 24 hours. Keep in mind that the dry/cure time can vary because of humidity levels. The more humid, the longer the drying/curing time. Putting a fan in the room to circulate the air will aid in the drying process. To avoid any cracking or adverse reactions with the Realistic Water, we recommend sealing the water feature using Plaster Cloth (C1203, C1191, C1192 & C1193), and coloring the area with Earth Colors Liquid Pigments (C1216-23). If you choose not to use the Earth Colors Pigments, use only 100% acrylic paint. You will want to be sure that there are no vinyl fillers in the paint, as this can cause bubbling, cracking or other adverse reactions with the Realistic Water. Hope this helps!

Can you put talus as a base for realistic water for a very realistic look?
@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 10 жыл бұрын
Hello Andy, Yes you can use Talus, but because Talus is a porous product, you need to follow a couple of extra steps. After you have prepared your Water Feature base with Plaster Cloth (C1203). You can use Earth Colors Liquid Pigment (C1216-C1223) or 100% acrylic paint only to color water area. You can then add the Talus to the Water Feature. Do so by using Scenic Glue (S190) (not regular white glue, because it has fillers in it that can react with Realistic Water) or Scenic Cement (S191) depending on the size Talus you are using (you will find instructions on the package for this). After the Talus is adhered and dry, you will want to seal it well with Scenic Cement (S191), and let it dry thoroughly. Because Talus is really porous and can absorb the Realistic Water, which can cause bubbles, we suggest letting the Talus dry for a few days with a fan in the room. The Scenic Cement will cause some initial cloudiness once the Realistic Water is poured, however it will clear up as the Realistic Water cures. Hope this helps and Happy Modeling!

do you also send to europe (Austria)? and what are the extra shipping costs and taxes for it ?
@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 7 жыл бұрын
We do ship to Austria. The cost just depends on what you are ordering. You can always go to our website, woodlandscenics.com, choose the products you would like, and when you go to the checkout section it will show you the cost of shipping. Your costs for shipping from the U.S. are going to be quite high though. We recommend using our Store Locator, woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/information/DealerSearch?WS=&country=CH&go=, and use a hobby shop from one of the surrounding countries. Italy, Switzerland, Germany, and Hungary all have shops that carry our products. Your shipping costs from one of them would be exponentially less. If there is anything else I can help you with please let me know.

@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 7 жыл бұрын
Hello! We designed our Layout Kits to work with the Atlas Track. Atlas makes a high quality track that is easy to work with and great for beginners. We don't recommend a beginner trying to alter the kit by using another type of track. While it is possible, it will work better for someone already experienced with Sub-Terrain and track layouts. It requires designing a new track plan and re-configuring the layout of the Risers and Inclines. Happy modeling!

Hi from Australia, again! :-) So glad you found a hobby shop. Yes, the Scenery Kit S927 is still available. The hobby shop may be able to get it through their distributor, which I am guessing is Zimbler. If it is not a product that they carry on a regular basis, you can ask your hobby shop to request that Zimbler order it when they order from us next. Thanks

@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 8 жыл бұрын
+urmee meraz You will want to start by painting the bottom of your scene with the desired color for your lake, stream, pond, etc. The darker the colors the deeper the appearance of the water. After it dries and you're happy with the final color you can put a clear varnish or epoxy over the top. Before it dries you can use a flat, hard surface to create ripples, waves, and other effects.

I'd like to make some prehistoric dioramas, and to do this I would need some jumbo sized trees to scale with the dinosaurs. Do you sell any product like that?
@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 8 жыл бұрын
+thesingingteranodon1 - Not sure how tall you are needing your trees, but our tallest trees are 9" tall. If that is not tall enough, you might search the how-to tree-making videos on KZfaq and just make them extra large. You can use branches from your yard. Here is one such video that might be helpful. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qaeTgLarl7aboXU.html Good luck and have fun!

Is HO close enough to OO?
@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 9 жыл бұрын
Cameron Pickering Cameron Pickering Hello Cameron. OO gauge (1:76) is the most common scale in the UK. Here in the states HO (1:87). As you can see they are really close and if would depend on you as to what is 'close enough.' For example a 6 ft man in real scale would be represented by a figure .827 inches in HO and 1.105 inches in OO, barely .3 difference. I guess it would matter more of how HO figures and buildings on your OO layout? I would imagine that maybe only the most finicky of the prototypical modelers would be able to tell the difference. Hope this helps.

Hello Robert! We probably will not update this particular video, however, we are continually working on new videos and have recently released several that specifically highlight the newest Terrain System products we recently released. The videos that we have produced to date include how to model with Shaper Sheet, Ready Rocks, Support Panels and the newest one for the Flexi-Edge and Road Striping Pens. We still have several videos to produce about the other products included in the new terrain products. Sometimes searching for our videos on our KZfaq channel can be cumbersome, because we have so many. You might check out the following link which will bring you to our website how-to video page, where we have the videos separated into categories. You will find there are lots of videos produced since Model Scenery Made Easy. These include many of the products we have developed since this one was filmed. Hope this will be more beneficial to you, and please let us know if you have any questions. woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/video/c/woodlandscenics Happy Modeling!

Oh ok just curious since I am building a project for the kids at Shriners hospital.I am building a 1:64th scale Race track (that they can race cars on) The cars will race down a road and through a old mining train town with a new city being built over it.Its basically a mountain on a 4X8 table.Just don't want the cars to look off if I used HO scale I am assuming S scale is either the same or way smaller?
@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 9 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a fantastic project, and what a wonderful fun activity for the kids at Shriner's hospital! S scale (1:64) is a bit larger than HO (1:87). According to Wikipedia, Matchbox produces varying sizes of cars: "The smaller models ("regular size"; 1-75 and related series) are often classified as 1:64 scale (though they range from smaller than 1:100 to much larger than 1:64) and measure about 2.5-3 inches, or 6.5-7.5 centimeters, in length." It also states that Hot Wheels Matchbox cars are classified at 1:64…you may want to verify that with Matchbox. Hope this helps…Happy Modeling!

Hello! The cost of building a model railroad layout will depend on your personal preferences and the use of the products. For example, it will depend on how dense you would like your Foliage’s to appear, as well as how much Turf, and Plaster Cloth you use. Other determining factors are things such as how big you build your layout, as well as what scale you are working in. In this video we used the Grand Valley Layout Kit (ST1483) which is an HO scale kit. The cost of this kit is $549.99. Keep in mind that you receive cost saving when you purchase the kit. We also offer the City and Industrial Building Set (S1486), which is nice since this also will save you on costs. This layout was actually designed around Atlas Code 83 Snap-Track, which is what we recommend that you use with this specific layout. You can find this Snap-Track at a local hobby shop or online. We suggest going to our website and taking a look at the terrain products that we have, as well as layout kits. This will give you an idea of the cost. Keep in mind that we do have a video section on our website at Woodlandscenics.com as well. Hope this helps!

A great addition to your scene would be Bigfoot. About 1.5 inches tall I think, would work great. oh wait. a bear attacking a bunch of campers. Bigfoot goes in another spot. AND THEN! you could draw on the skill of cuckoo clock makers (or the late great Jim Henson) and make the teeniest train rider that turns his head as the train passes by the unfortunate campers and mama bear (baby bear should be around somewhere). The train rider needs to have a surprised look on his face. How terrible, there's nothing he can do since he's on a train going 100 mph. Well, he can pray. That's usually a lot more effective anyway #hisnameisYehoVAH
