Model trains in HO scale: Cab ride through the large miniature world of Modelspoorgroep Nienoord

In the north of the Netherlands, near the town of Leek, there is a beautiful model railway layout built by the Dutch model train club, called Modelspoorgroep Nienoord. The miniature world has been built in HO scale and has an area of more than 100 m². The HO scale layout depicts the Dutch landscape as well as the massive mountains of Switzerland and Austria.
When the trains drive from the Netherlands to the Alps on this layout, they have to cross Germany. Therefore, the large main station, called “Wilhelmstad”, is located in the centre of the model railroad layout. In this cab ride video, we use Pilentum’s DJI Osmo Pocket camera installed inside the locomotive and discover the different landscapes, towns and villages that lie next to the railway lines.

As you can see in the video, I am not happy with the autofocus performance of the DJI Osmo Pocket Camera. The image quality is sensational, but I apologize for the autofocus. What are your experiences with this camera?

While I noticed the autofocus shifts, they didn't bother me all that much here. In other videos they have been quite annoying, but also sometimes beneficial. What bothered me more on this video was that everything that wasn't straight ahead or at a great distance was out of focus. I don't know if you have any control over depth of focus, but if so that could be useful.

I've always said that these style of 'cab rides' are the key to success in shooting a model railway video. This is almost perfect apart from the focus issues. Now to really hit the big time you need cab ride with near misses & crashes. Leave your money on the fridge when you hit the big coin.

Wonderful detailed and fun video. The cab ride will always be incredibly fun. It's very addictive. Especially when traveling with a fast train going past the cab ride. This entire layout has been well planned and gorgeous. Sorry about the autofocus problem, but really it wasn't that bad. Thank you so much for the fine video.

Дааа! Всю жизнь мечтал "проехать" в кабине игрушечного локомотива! У самого была немецкая железная дорога, фирмы "PIKO". 1/87 отец покупал в "Детском мире"! Стоила она тогда, аж 25 рублей! Эх детство!

The details are very good especially the overhead electric wires but not a single electric locomotive runs with the pantograph in an up position!

I still haven’t seen any miniature network with a reasonably convincing catenary system. This one isno exception. And the fact that all electrics run panto down proves that they don't trust their wires...

@@marcvandyck8052 You are right, especially on the turnouts it's not realistic at all. You don't just attach a wire to the other at the mast. The 2 wires need to run parallel to prevent snags. Back in the 80s I scratch built my catenary and I followed the real systems. It was also functional. Because I didn't have electronics, I modified by locos to pick up the motor from the catenary and the lights from the track. This way I could have the passenger cars with the lights on all the time and controlled the locos but turning off sections of the catenary. The rest of the layout is outstanding. However, it's a pity that such investment is spoiled by a not so good catenary.

Nienoord is a fantastic layout. I live near Leek and I have seen it many times. In Nienoord Park there is also a huge garden layout of 3,5km length in scale 1:5,5 and also a large LGB-layout. This video is nice, but doesn't really get the feel of the beautiful H0 track.

Már az elején láttam, hogy komoly, amikor megláttam az állomás méretét. (ehaza is jó volt egy komoly modellvasút, a Miniverzum, abszolút érhetetlen, hogy elbontották? Ha nem kellett nekik, miért nem adták ki bérbe az üzemeltetését, ez sok lelkes amatőrnek arculcsapás volt, akik építették a terepasztalt! ) Hol van most idehaza a legnagyobb?

My only experience with this camera is with this video. Starting out, I felt normal. Then, at the first stop, when it all came into focus, I thought... ( I had first read the description, knowing we were in the Netherlands and would be crossing Germany, but no where near Poland). Then out on the main line, I was, frankly, quite shocked when focused again to see such giant Dutch people... apparently a giant Dutch Mom and even an apparent giant young Dutch son. This soon passed and I adjusted quite nicely to the layout ride and focus. Which, I say, was well done and thoroughly enjoyable. Gracias por tu video. R.T. West envía... sends... Puebla, México...

Bel plastico, niente da dire. Non comprendo però la realizzazione della linea aerea senza che poi essa venga utilizzata. Le locomotive elettriche con i pantografi abbassati sono un'assurdità, e per niente belle da vedere.
