Never thought of extruding in that direction, great tip. The gap is a little large but that's a minor detail, easily adjusted. AND every "common hinge" in my house is shaped exactly like this.

I am learning that thinking differently about how you construct a model is just as if not more important to efficient modeling than anything else. Thinking outside the box is definitely *IN* .

Thank you for your videos. I'm a woodworker that uses SketchUp for designing furniture for my customers. I like to show as much joinery as I can to give them a really good sense of the finished piece. One thing I wish I was better at drawing is dovetails. I can do it, but it takes so long. I'm probably doing the LONG way. When I watch your videos, I feel like there has to be a faster more efficient way to do it. Maybe using the divide command, and maybe in combination with the solid tools subtract. In fact, there's many times where I'm trying to intersect with the model so that I can infer geometry outlines onto other surfaces that I can push pull dados, grooves, etc. Anyway, just thought maybe I'd drop my thoughts and something I'd like to see. My SketchUp skills are getting better from watching your videos.

I really love seeing everything fall into place when watching this video and using native tools. I am fascinated with parametric architecture and forms. Can you show more of this type of modelling involving native tools.The harley petrol tank was a classic. I guess what I am looking for are models that do not have any straight lines. Thanks for the videos.

Thought I wold follow along since it will keep me from doing what I am supposed to be doing. At the end I thought I'd try out Curic mirror you suggested a while back instead of the rotate/copy which is what I always did. A left and right arrow key later and... presto!! Also, I'm always messed up which item to select first when using solid tools. Apparently I can be forgiven as I just noticed that the "other" solid tools the order is reversed. Thanks for the tutorial.

@donproctor34453 жыл бұрын
at 3:06 mark you check to see if it was still a solid. That reminded me, many times when creating models I create a solid and try to use solid tools but it wont work saying it isnt a solid. Very confusing when things wont work and you have no idea why or how to correct them. I end up spending the rest of the day searching for an answer and not getting anything done.

Cool hinge! Unfortunately I don't think it works. I followed along and learned a lot from your video, but went to apply the hinge to a box and realized that unless one of the two plates is offset it cannot attach to a square corner. With what I learned here I'll be able to make one that works though, thanks!
@andreabertino1644 жыл бұрын
Loved this video, thanks. I am having trouble with the follow me command- when I try to do this, I am unable to select the rectangle face. It only allows me to choose a point on the edge of the line and circle. I wound up using the follow me to the opposite corner and then using push/pull to the end of the rectangle. It worked, but I'd like to understand what I am doing wrong. Any help is appreciated.

Oky doky... I challenge you to make your hinge model into a Dynamic Component where the interact tool can rotate either hinge half by 90º on the first click, to 180º on the second click (fully closed), back to 90º on the third click, and all the way back to 0º (fully open) on the 4th click. I'm really hoping you can just convert your half hinge group into a component, add the DC rotation functionality, duplicate the new half hinge DC, and reorient it to mesh with the original half hinge component. In theory(?), you should be able to use the interact tool to click on either half hinge component to make it rotate as desired. Seems like a good addition to your previous DC skill builder sessions. I'm also hoping your DC expertise will be able to make the "flipped and rotated" second hinge half DC work as it should. I know when tried it, the second half hinge DC's rotational behavior was a total mystery to me!
@AaronMakingStuff4 жыл бұрын
The thing to remember is that the second half of the hinge was flipped, to it's axis is upside down! If you use RotateZ on it, you need to provide negative values!
@bradmeacham69824 жыл бұрын
@@AaronMakingStuff Well... Lets ignore the positive vs negative rotation direction issue for now. First, I set up a hinge half DC who's OnClick behavior is exactly as intended - rotating along the center axis of the hinge pin. Then I select the hinge half DC, copy it, and immediately do a paste in place. Now I have two hinge halves exactly on top of each other. Next I use the Rotate tool to rotate the hinge half DC copy 180º around its Y (green) axis at the center of the hinge pin. So far, so good. However, the second hinge half DC now needs to by rotated 180º around its center and along its blue axis to make the two hinge halves properly align. I decided to do this with the Move tool. I grab the proper rotate handle, click, and do the rotation. At this point I have NOT finished the Move tool rotate with a second click and the hinge half DC copy LOOKS correct. However, as soon as I click to finish the Move tool rotation, the dang hinge half DC COPY moves along the Y (green) axis in a positive direction exactly the same length of the hinge half AND it completely undoes the blue axis Move tool rotation. What the... As I said before, I have no clue why this is happening to the hinge half DC copy. And to be clear, I'm doing nothing in the DC that has anything at all to do with the Y axis position of the component. As a certain Vulcan might say, "Fascinating".🖖

Great - So if you want to use the model to demonstrate a moving part, is it possible to lock the point of rotation ? I have a more complex model and I want to make an animation with different degrees of zoom at different scenes. I have to zoom in to find the centre of the hinge every time. Advice?
