Spot on. Perfect results, I've found that if you model the likes of dirt, concrete etc, using the real stuff beats any man made products. Smashed it. Top job.

On my TMD I have just used card and then painted it. I have also weathered it slightly, but the way you have done it with reall concrete it looks much better than my hard standing. Well done.

This has an amazingly realistic finish to it - great job! I am a little puzzled at the products description of 'concrete' though as I always thought it contained cement which uses water for its chemical reaction to harden rather than air drying!

I really liked you're method of putting the flangeway into the hard standing... it looked really good. I bet your layout had a good covering of concrete dust over it though, except where that red cloth was, with you blowing the dust from the flangeway instead of hoovering it up, and not attaching a vacuum to your electric sander to catch the dust from that, you must have spent more time cleaning up the dust than you spent doing the project. It looks as though you could have done with wiping a damp cloth over the concrete before the wash as it looked as though you were brushing dust up when you started brushing the wash on. A suggestion if you do it again is maybe using a metal plasterers trowel to put the mixture down and then letting it dry for a short while, like you did, and then finishing it off with the trowel wet in a bucket of water and cleaned each pass like ive seen plasterers do when they put the finish to plastered walls.

Very nice. Apart from having real concrete rather than polyfiller, (plasti)card etc., the great thing is how fine and realistic looking the flange grooves are using your technique. Great stuff :-)

Hi Marcus, looking good. With the little nicks and divots, fill with some filler dyed dark grey/black, to represent a tarmac patch, or fill with some resin to form a puddle, or mixed with black paint to form an oil spill. Cheers Rich

Nice job mate, I remember doing this with filler on Melksham TMD, pig of a job...This looks very similar but the tip with using only the cutting disc is great.

Very good mate I will definitely keep this in mind when it comes to this stage on mine. One thing I might just add from experience. Using a good vac to suck up concrete dust or any other similar stuff such as plaster dust etc is a very bad idea. Because the dust is so fine it gets into the motor and burns them out. When I was renovating i ended up investing in a middle of the line wet and dry vac and it works a bloody treat and has come in very handy for layout use now. Just trying to save you from getting killed by the wife haha

You should go to Jewsons & get something called Polyfilla "one fill" it's much more maliable,it's a ready mixed white filler,if you mix your paint with it before you put it down then once dry all you need to do is score it & weather it,it's a bit expensive but much easier to use & gives the same result

Running a old triang big wheel wagon down before it dried might have helped with the flange ways. A damp cloth would also help keep the dust down along with fitting the vac pipe to the sander.

My only suggestion is to start with coarser sandpaper, then move to finer grade. It'll save lots of time and effort. But either way, your results look fantastic.

Hi, nice job, but personally, I much prefer your plasticard version. I thought the cracks and expansion joints with grass tufts looked awesome. Maybe if you added those features to this version, it would add that extra bit visual realism. Cheers Rich

Can I suggest you spray the board with water before applying the mix, this will promote adhesion to the substrate (baseboard)

Should have used a tamping bar like they use in full scale would have got it level in no time. Concrete sets better if you bring moisture to the surface. Weathered Concrete doesn't really have any light patches, by it's nature unless sealed it absorbs any spillages (Diesel, Oil, Grease or Paint). Concrete/Cement dust is not very good for your lungs hope you were wearing a filter mask.

I think your making too much work for yourself, have you thought about Self levelling compound? Basically, a very thin cement used prior to fitting flooring.

Surely plaster would have sufficed, polyfilla etc... then just paint it! Too much work.

Technique works well, but dude....slapping all that concrete down next to your expensive stock made me cringe ....move it, take it off, please...I wrecked a ltd edition paint by having it in place when doing work
