Cast Iron Chaos

Cast Iron Chaos

4 жыл бұрын

It's been nearly ten years since I began cooking in cast iron, and it's been nearly five years since I did a video showing off my cast iron collection. I do want to thank everyone who watched that video and enjoyed it, and after five years it's time to do a follow-up. I'm a little embarrassed to say my collection has gotten bigger since then. In addition to acquiring some additional vintage cast iron pans, I'm now the proud owner of several modern pans that I intend to use as much as the vintage pieces. Between 2015 and 2020 the popularity of cast iron has exploded, and there has been a lot of brand new modern cookware produced to catch people's attention. I've fallen for temptation a few times, and the results can be seen here. So, if you'd like to watch me rambling about vintage and modern cast iron for the next twenty-five minutes or so, let's get started.

OMG! I asked for an updated cast iron collection a few years ago (when I first got into cast iron) and was happy when I saw this video premiering tonight! It’s funny how personal the collections can be - I would have never thought my pieces were a reflection of my taste and personality until I saw your stash! Thanks for sharing :)

Amazing collection and knowledge to match! Wow. You’ve inspired me to do two things...make cornbread tomorrow in my own lovely Griswold corn stick pan and search my garage for a cast iron dutch oven that I picked up years ago. I need to get it cleaned up and working again. Thank you for this excellent walk through of your stunning collection.

Your video started my interest in hunting for old cast iron pans. You and your group have taught me a lot over the years, and because of the information you put out, I have been able to find a few very unique pans that I use often. I also have completely switched over to cast iron for my cooking. Thanks so much for putting more info out there. You're keeping an old tradition going.

I know the feeling of regret. I lost a 22'' round high sided skillet and a Lodge wok in my divorce. While shopping in IKEA in the UAE I found a 15'' square skillet with a helper handle in IKEA for about $6. It is my only iron skillet and I treasure it. We've been inseparable buddies since 2008. Now I live in turkey and there are no cast iron pans here, so I satisfy the Jones by watching your videos. Thanks!

There is nothing like cooking in cast iron, I loveeeeeee my cast iron, I introduce my daughter to them and ever since we both only use Cast Iron for cooking everything. My mother in law only used cast iron all the way to her ripe age of 96. I hope to do the same. My collections goes to my daughter who appreciates them as much as I do. Just like you my collections has gotten bigger, I have found most of my pieces at Goodwill, when people who do not know how to use them give them up. You keeping giving them to goodwill and I will keep buying them, its additive. Thanks for you video.

I’m in the process of restoring my mom’s no.9 Wagner Ware skillet as I write this…it’s in the oven (300F) for seasoning. The skillet may have been for her grandmother, but mom passed away 4 years ago and there is no way to know the exact details. I followed your instructions for stripping away decades of buildup and discovered a no9 Wagner Ware, no heat ring in gorgeous condition. I would have never attempted doing this if i had not watched your video on aluminum cookware - Magnalite, which i adore. Also, i have an old chicken fryer that’s unmarked, so I’m assuming that its also a Wagner ware item. This particular pot is in much better condition and will not need stripping, etc. I appreciate your knowledge and willingness to share and teach those willing to learn how to restore and care for their precious cookware. Oh…your pot brownie episode was epic!

great tour, you are the collector's collector. i like the big dutch ovens too,(esp the one you found in the street), but i would almost never use them since they are too big for a stove top, and i hardly ever roast anything but maybe a turkey. what stoves need is a huge 12'' burner to enable use of large skillets and D O's. i am afraid to use my big griswolds and wagners on the stove burner for fear of warpage, so i will continue to use them only on the occasional campfire...

I have had a pot that belonged to my great grampa (i am 63 so its pretty old) I was told he cooked his hamburger in it. hahahahah I havent been able to find out anything on it. It appears to have a gate mark. It has a diamond shape mark on the bottom which appears to have possible a L in it. It also has No. 2 and maybe 3 pints? Cant quite make it out. Can you recommend a source to identifying old pots. It also has a lovely long rolled steel handle. I love the pot and use it all the time.

Could you do another video that goes into detail about your collection display? I want to be able to access all of my pieces to be able to use them. Would they swing and hit each other if I hang them on one of those racks too close? Do you have some tucked away that aren't with the display for use? My collection is smaller than yours but somehow I feel I have too many to have on display for use. I'm sure your new kitchen is a different layout and I'd enjoy watching where you've found homes for your pieces.

I have 2 older cast iron skillets that are unmarked with outside rings and streep walls. The handles are strange to me. The one marked 10 could be an unmarked Griswold. The one marked 5 has a ridge like a BSR, but it has a small hole or indent right where the handle meets the pan. And it has what looks like a dash or letter l near the other side near the hanging hole . Is there some way I could send you some pictures? Only thing I am not on Facebook.... Sorry.

I was wondering if you could please help me. Have you ever heard of a Wagner Chef Skillet mercedes style? I recently purchased, from a reputable dealer on Etsy, the aforementioned skillet. It is only marked (on the back) 9 inch and the letter z. The pan is advertised as a 1980s unmarked Wagner. The “heat ring” on the bottom of the pan looks like the Mercedes logo. I cannot find anything anywhere on the net about this type of pan. I’m hoping it is at least made in the USA. Interestingly too, the pan has mill marks (concentric circles). I thought everything after 1960 was required to be marked “made in the USA” or the country of origin. It was an impulse buy that I can’t get out of, so now I have this pan in the process of being shipped to me and I have no clue about the origins. It wasn’t cheap either. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.
@castironchaos
@castironchaos 4 жыл бұрын
My biggest concern for you is that it may be warped. Apparently those skillets have been seen to warp and spin on the bottom. From www.modemac.com/bsr: "This one is a genuine mystery. A number of these pans have appeared with this unusual design on the bottom, along with the unmistakable size marking of a [BS&R] Century Cookware skillet. However, there have also been some of these pans found that have the marking of an unmarked Wagner: 10 1/4 INCH SKILLET. Former officials of Birmingham Stove & Range, including Hugh Rushing and Saunders Jones, Jr., insist this design was never used at the foundry. Nonetheless, pans with this design continue to appear in the hands of collectors and sellers. There have been guesses these were actually made by Wagner, but no one has been able to provide any evidence regarding the origin of these pans. A few collectors have given these pans the nickname "Mercedes" because of the similarity to the auto maker's logo."

There's a great Facebook group for selling cast iron: Iron Man Cast Iron Auctions. The folks there are knowledgeable and the moderators keep it honest. Much better than eBay.

Btw it's funny that you turned down a Field's then bought a Lodge. I support Lodge but why not accept a free fields?

I turned down a Field skillet because I had no need for it. With a Griswold Erie, Birmingham Stove & Range, a Lodge chef skillet and two Lodge skillets of the same size, there was no need for another skillet. As for the Field being smooth and beautiful: yes it is, but so is the BS&R and Griswold.
