Hi guys! After one year of constantly using the 135mm prime lens, here I share my thoughts about this beautiful focal lenght! I love the 135mm as stand alone prime lens and I much prefer it over the 85mm prime lens or the enourmous 70-200mm f2.8. If you also love to shoot with prime lenses, I hope you'll find this video helpful!
If you are looking for a great 135mm prime lens in the used market, check MPB (it's where I buy all my lenses) = prf.hn/l/me3OJz1
Sony GM 135mm f1.8 = geni.us/rW5X0UX
Rokinon 135mm F2 (damn cheap!) = geni.us/giIgS4
Sigma 135mm F1.8 = geni.us/mu1ig

You can only bring a short telephoto lens with you. What do you bring? 85mm f1.4, 135mm f2 or the 70-200mm f2.8? 😜

85 all day event on a full frame. Something special about the framing and compression that has JUST enough distortion in comparison to a 135

As a portrait photographer who likes very specific background rendering, I wouldn't take any of them :P a Contax 50/1.4 or Biotar 75/1.5 would be my go-to.

The rendering of this lens is amazing. You can clearly tell that there is some micro contrast in the images its able to produce. Thanks for another great video, Luca! 🙌🏽

The best thing about some 135mm lenses is that you can use them on medium format cameras and then your portrait model doesnt have to be in shouting distance anymore :D

This is the best zeiss lens in all line ups. Including the Otus line up. The biggest downside that Im not sure if you mentioned is the barrel extension. It is too long. However the images from this lens is the best I ever seen. Only other lens to compare with feel and character is the Hasselblad 150mm N , unfortunatey though its a photo only lens

Yeah the barrel extension is annoying for video work with a follow focus, but only if you need to use deep rack focus...I simply showed it in the video, without talking about it but thanks for pointing this characteristic of the lens! Cheers!

I own the Zeiss 135mm f/2 APO Sonnar ZF 2 (77mm filter) prime lens. I love using this lens for photojournalism and documentary photography. I use it with Zeiss 28mm f/2 Distagon T* ZF 2 (58mm filter) and/or a Zeiss 35mm f/1.4 Distagon ZM (49mm filter).

You have a beautiful set of lenses! Is the 35mm zm having the reversed focus like the zf? Does it match good with the other two lenses you have?

@@LucaBono.Studio I use the 35mm on a Leica M6 rangefinder and the 28mm and the 135mm on a Nikon F2 SLR. The images of my three Zeiss lenses (28/35/135) match very well. However, since I primarily used them for shooting black & white, I have no idea how their color images match. Also, since the focus ring and the f/stop ring of my ZF lenses and ZM lenses rotate in opposite directions, I rarely use my ZF lenses and my ZM lens together. I usually use my 35mm ZM lens with 21 and 90mm Leitz lenses because their rings rotate in the same direction. I usually use my 28 and 135mm ZF lenses with Nikon, Fuji, and Pentax Takumar lenses because their rings rotate in the same direction.

135mm is a lovely focal length. Used my EF Canon 135mm f/2 a lot in London. When I was in Tokyo last year I put it on my camera and sadly had to notice it couldn't focus beyond ~15m anymore... So I had to rely on the 85mm f/1.2 as my only telephoto lens. Glad I got it repaired later. From Zeiss I have an old M42 135mm f/3.5 MC Sonnar with built-in lens hood - that one is really compact but only f/3.5 and only 6 aperture blades.

Thank you for this and your other Zeiss related videos. I have owned a few Zeiss ZF.2 lenses and wonder what is your opinion of this lens compared to the 100mm ZF2 Zeiss especially in terms of usefulness for near subjects through to landscapes.

When I started photographing back in the early 70s at the age of 10-12 (you do the math), there were generally two combinations of reportage kits. The two lens setup was 35mm and 75mm and a three lens setup was 28, 50 and 135mm. So, the 135 is actually a very classic focal length, not only for portraits, but also landscapes and sports. Very versatile, when used properly. The Zeiss is a beauty. It has, what I’d like to call a ‘natural sharpness and contrast’. Not that overly ‘processed’ look that some modern lenses (and cameras) nowadays have and that does so well in test charts, but so ‘over the top’ in real life. Thanks for sharing this video.

Hi Jacob, thanks for sharing your experience! When I work for event photography, I really love the 3 lenses combo with the Zeiss 25/50/135mm f2! This setup is heavy, bulky and unpractical but I get very beautiful images and it's totally worth it. Cheers!

I love your Zeiss lens reviews. You always have some special videos and photos in it that i really like. I have a Zeiss Classic 21mm, 25mm , 35mm and 50mm and cant between 85mm, 100mm Makro and 135mm. The reason for the 100mm would be the makro capability but i dont know wether i would use it anyways. Its a "just in case i want to do some macro shots" Maybe go extreme with the 135mm first and then buy, the 85mm later.
@LucaBono.Studio
@LucaBono.Studio 8 ай бұрын
Glad you like them! The 85mm will be a good match for your lenses...at least, that's what I feel about my 85mm f1.4. The 100mm makro seems to have heavy CA if used wide open (I never had that lens and I don't miss it in my kit), for macro shots I can always use the 135mm f2 apo + the Nisi Close-up diopter that is also apochromatic. Another problem of the Apo Sonnar, that I forgot to mention, is that once you use an apochromatic lens...it's difficult to go back to normal lenses

@@Milan-cf1xe In the UK I recently bought an 85mm f1.4 for £400 and a 100mm Makro f2 for £425. I bought the 135mm f2 APO new some years ago, I paid £1,019 in 2019. There's a new other one on eBay in Austria now for about €900, from a highly reputable dealer.

Ah, so you got hold of one! I'd like to think you took my advice... ;) This is an absolute beast, as you have probably found out by now. Did you also get the 35/1.4? Another killer tool, like I said before. Get that one, too, and add it to your current setup of 25/50(MP?) and 135. You will either develop some muscle or get totally wrecked physically, like I have. Both, probably. BTW It seems you're in The Netherlands quite often. Whereabouts? Amersfoort, Utrecht? I'm in the west, near Den Haag.

Your advice helped in the purchase ahahah. The 35mm f1.4 is still in stand-by. I needed to buy the 15mm f2.8 first for some paid jobs. Maybe next year I'll add the 35mm f1.4! I live in Amersfoort 🇳🇱 if you're around send me a message on Instagram 👌🏻

Is it difficult shooting this without a tripod? I'm considering getting the 100mm Macro to replace my Canon, but my 90D obviously doesn't have ibis, and I can't always bring a tripod with me, so I'm a bit hesistant...

You can use it handheld (I'm talking about the 135), but focusing as well as making compositions benefit a LOT from using a monopod (if a tripod is too much to bring). DOF is quite shallow and even if your arm is steady, you'll probably get tired and need to refocus and recompose regularly.

A good 135mm lens is a lens I never use but when I do, I am in love with the photos. I switched from Canon to Sony but I kept my 135L f2 lens and use it on a Sony. Its amazing. Ok this lens is probably better but whatever. 135mm lenses are awesome and buy a f2 200mm lens and it'll bankrupt you.

With macro lenses it's more difficult to track someone with long lenses. The focus throw is much shorter in the long range. But yeah, at f2 with 135mm is pretty easy to miss focus 😅 Congrats for the Milvus lenses. Cheers!
