The Educated Barfly

5 жыл бұрын

The Gin Basil Smash was created by German barman Joerg Meyer at the bar Le Lion in Hamburg around 2008. According to Meyer he was inspired by Dale Degroff's Whiskey Smash. It is very similar to the Mojito subbing out Rum for Gin and Basil for Mint. Now that the weather around here is getting a bit warmer, it's time to start in on some warmer weather drinks. Amiright?

You could try to make a blender muddled version of it (as described in Dave Arnolds "Liquid Intelligence". Basically blend together everything except the sirup and then strain, add sirup and shake. Makes for a super green drink, literally the colour of basil.

Oh man, this is one of my faves, but I didn't know it was a real thing until about a year ago. I wish I could pin down the first time I made one, as it had to be right around the time Herr Meyer created the official version, but oblivious me was just kicking around the house, hankering for a mojito, yet having none of the things that go into it. My mom claiming that basil is related to mint is pretty much the only reason I accidentally wound up with this drink in my hand, and I'm so glad Herr Meyer finessed the specs so I can enjoy a perfected version now.

what is your stance upon using Cream of tartar (Potassium bitartrate) in simple syrups to deter crystal growth?
@TheEducatedBarfly
@TheEducatedBarfly 4 жыл бұрын
Honestly I’ve never had a problem with crystals forming in 1:1 simple syrup it can be a problem with syrups that are a little thicker with higher sugar ratios. I don’t see the problem with using it though, it may give a tangy taste when used in syrup but honestly I haven’t tried it so don’t know for sure

Interested to see the ripping of the basil. My only experience with muddling herbs is mint for mojitos and I always heard that you shouldn't shred the mint while muddling because it will get too vegetal. Is this just a basil thing or is it personal preference?
@TheEducatedBarfly
@TheEducatedBarfly 5 жыл бұрын
You can rip basil in half before adding to a tin without getting vegetal notes. When pressing with a muddler to release the essence it's easier to extract too much plant flavor. When you shake the cocktail it'll rip the basil or mint anyway. The trick is to not press too hard, that's when you get those vegetal notes.

My parents visited Le Lion with two friends. Interestingly they were highly unimpressed with service, atmosphere and the drink (was way too sour). Wasn't there myself though, so I can't confirm their experience.
@markusfreund6961
@markusfreund6961 11 ай бұрын
First off, it's "fresh", not "sour". Americans are known for oversweetening everything and Jörg Meyer is known to like his drinks on the fresh side. So if you know anything at all about bar culture you'll expect the drinks in his bar to be on the fresh side as well. But that's where the problem lies because "Americans" and "knowing anything" usually doesn't mix. Secondly, if you come to Germany acting like the regular American tourist (i.e. loud, entitled, utterly ignorant yet expecting to be treated like the Chinese Emperor) then you're in for a surprise. We don't do small talk here, we don't sugar coat, and we don't brown-nose. The Le Lion has repeatedly been recognized as one of the best bars in the world and the team surely doesn't have to suck up to everybody. Professional courtesy is a given on that level, and anything beyond that is earned. Plus, service personnell are paid actual wages here so nobody has to put up with poor behaviour for tips. That's why you go abroad, to experience different cultures. Can't handle that, stay at home. Germany is being overrun by useless foreigners with a faulty attitude as it is.

The Educated Barfly The vowel mutation ö can also be written oe in German. The e can also be used to stretch the vowel like in some german and dutch dialects. Joerg uses the oe as an international spelling for the vowel mutation and not as vowel stretching. George in Germany would be Georg and the vowels are pronounced one after the other, like Ge-org. I like the „Gin Basil Smash“ very much and that’s what counts! Jörg has to live with his vowel mutation one way or the other! Best regards from Germany 🇩🇪!

Perhaps You have not noticed, that You are in a video, so there is no need to say "I am going to..." JUST DO IT, and maybe say what You ARE doing. You do not have to be an idiot in every moment, and You CAN film the scene one or two times again, if the "take" is not good.
