That's why every youngsters from Malaysia and Indonesia have to learn it to trully understand it. Alot of youngsters from Malaysia and Indonesia didn't want to truly understand about Silat, and then they just want to condemn and hate it. And they always says Jiu Jitsu, Boxing, muay thai, and Wrestling are far better than Silat 🤦

This is only one of the use in combat. There's more there is to it, like disarming, blocking, etc.

@@arvin6606 yeah that's true! The sarong is useful in thousand ways hence why some Malay people called it "Kain Seribu Guna" which means "Cloth of thousand uses". Silat and Bokator or Khmer Boran use it as an offence and defence tool in war.

depend on the opponent, if he's a judoka, better to ditch the saroong right away :D here's a story, my gramp was a army veteran during the independence time in Indonesia. when little me visited his house, i always wondering about a Black Belt Judo Certificate hanging in the wall. So i ask Dad, if gramp learned Judo. So Dad tell me, no. During the Japan occupation, Gramps was one of the schoolboy recruited to be part of Indonesia army (PETA) by the japanese. So one day his japanese comander, which is a black belt Judoka, wants to spar, as part of martial art training in the army. Gramps, just like a nice Indonesian lads at the time, mastering Silat from his neighbourhood, or school (padepokan/pesantren). But before/during the spar, as a witty lad my Gramps are, the first thing he do was undressed, to only wear his underpant, and even put some coconut oil on his body. That why he avoided some advantages from his commander Judo style. in the end Gramps won the spar, and his commander gave him that Judo black belt certificate, without even training in Judo school :D The certificate still proudly hangin in the wall, sadly Gramps passed away several years ago.

From what i read so far pencak silat part of its practice is to use whatever you you can get can get your hands on, use it as weapon against your opponent, even a handbag not so easy to learn but very lethal.

Also think modern day Silat is training and fighting in the MMA format , their is one Pride MMA promotion in Indonesia that hosts MMA fights and allows a special Silat MMA fight , I’m assuming the Silat practitioner would cross train boxing Muay Thai , wrestling and BJJ to their knife techniques and snap your neck techniques

With the right mindset, a sling bag can become a very useful self-defense tool. You can choke with it, block knife strikes, etc.

the principle taught in the best Silat syles (there are hundreds of Silat styles) is to use whatever things you can find around you to be a weapon - pen, stick, umbrella, rope, bag, etc

do you realize that Silat has been used in battles and wars for centuries ? do you realize that many special armed forces adopt Silat techniques, especially the weapons and handling weapons attack ? in recent years there are casualties in the street of Indonesia where a Silat practicioner had to deal with robbers armed with machetes/large sickle. the Silat fighter empty handed was able to defeat them alone and even killed one of the robbers with their own weapon. the news went viral and the Silat fighter was interviewed on several national talkshows

Sarung is traditional cloth from Indonesia/Malaysia. And we not using sarung only for hide our private part. We also use sarung as a weapon.

But no elbows? Could have done a gliding elbow on entry or at the end, in the cloth lock, finish with a reverse or regular full elbow. Doesn't silat incorporate a lot of elbows or am I wrong??

It does incorporate elbows but im sure if you were to apply this technique it would be from a minimizing injury standpoint if you were gonna pummel there face with elbows you would just leave the sling part out

silat at malaysia and Indonesia be like torture training discipline if we are not disciplined welp my teacher told me to do about 50 knuckles pushups its a torture thats for malaysia since i learn silat gayong malaysia since im a malaysian my self but idk for the Indonesia idk how they are being teach all i know i went to pain but sometimes teacher can be friendly but sometimes we have to take it serious

my senior once told us that they had a chance to undergo some training during a visit to our silat school main branch in indonesia (in jogja to be precise). So they did some step/footwork training on a field full of sharp pebbles, and then on a rocky stream beside a waterfall, each place in not less than two hours.. resulting in lots of cuts and bruises on their feet and soles. He cringed while recalling that experience. Then he said "and you guys complain about having to train here (in Malaysia) on a soccerfield or beach sand for only 45 minutes. Softies! "

Don't fight close combat with silat fighter. If you try punch his face, They will catch you hand, and broke your finger. Silat more for defense, not for attacking.
