This is demonstration, not an actual fight. This is learning process guys. Haters will always complains behind their safe door, just like a dog barking to the moon. In war or street fight, there are no rules like in mma or boxing ring. No referee to stop the fight. It's a reality only ignorant egoistict people would never accept. Instead of complain, why don't you guys just enjoy it? Or how about posting videos about your own technique then, tough guy ^^~ Btw It's great to see they are having fun learning ^^

@Vance, I've come to understand that most people commenting on something like this as 'BS' are folks who have never studied any martial or and I'm betting that at least half are children who have only done martial arts playing Tekken. Don't sweat the goofy 'haters' because they are of no real consequence. Trying to debate with these fools is like having an advanced economics debate with a 2nd year high school drop out. Not worth your time.

Why I love silat so much that I still keep my basics till today is that the flow of the movement and the logic behind the attacks. In fights(referring to street fights), it is very hard to get a clean K.O hit, especially against experienced and educated assailant. It is only logic to be faster than your opponent, or in silat terminology, to appear faster than your opponent, by positioning and timing. And of course, knowing where to hit. Since silat, when learned properly even at the basic level, was meant to murder. To kill. At some more gruesome level, to disable the opponent forever. Even the symbolic weapon of silat, the keris or kris, was meant to produce wounds that will cause major bleeding and complications in stitching it back. To some degree, though I rarely practice the art nowadays, I give my root martial art, the Silat Helang Putih Perkasa(SHPP), my greatest respect. My basics are all from them.

+Dustin It only works if you are trained properly. Speed, agility and strength are bold elements in Silat, so it doesn`t matter how fast your opponent is, with proper training you are going to make it works. Silat offers you awhole package of body and movement knowledges which in some cases superior compared to other martial arts, so go to the training floor and make it the best out of yourself or simply don`t!

Look this man up before you critique, because you don't know Silat or him well enough to make assumptions. He has plenty of demonstration showing how correct stances can help you absorb incredible amounts of force. As in, lets his student kick him in the side of the ribs at full force while he continued to speak.

Aidan Fisher Today’s martial arts aren’t new... the arts we know today are ancient, the only thing that makes MMA today more effective is that they took different portions from different martial arts and mixed them in a way that it fits more modern style fighting. You can’t compare MMA to traditional martial arts because you’re taking 1 art and comparing it with multiple others at once, which is stupid.
@traceurs619
@traceurs619 3 жыл бұрын
Aidan Fisher Ig you’ve seen his videos, he makes a statement in which he says he teaches the tradition of his version of Silat. It’s his old tradition, and what he wants people to do is take from what he gives, then adapt it to modern fighting and make it flow for the fighter in training. He doesn’t say his training works in today’s day and age, but it was powerful back then. All people need to do is take the original training and make it modern to fit the fighter involved, basically adapting FROM it, not using this exact form in every scenario.

Definitely going to integrate this into my "JKD"! I prefer to try and eye-jab, groin-kick etc. the opponent in a real life-threatening-situation btw. Anyways, what I like most about Silat is the centerline with the triangle going from the shoulders to the ceiling and down (machete). Directly forward like in Wing Chun is maybe faster but this one opens a lot of new possibilities together with the reference points/balance/throwing/lock stuff and all that it´s just rly brutal, practical and cool. Mad respect for keeping/teaching the tradition/art too^^

As i understand asian people are quite strongly into respect, even when fighting someone. With that background i would afraid as an outsider to challenge someone and hurting him during that. I believe many people think likewise so that your offer is in vain over even seducing people to play the "student"-"master" game. From what i see in history the philippines had an exceptional way of defending themselves, but i cant judge what is left of that. I cant really make sense of what i see in the demonstrating videos either, as there are no resisting opponents and some techniques are not compatible with my concept of physics.

Very good instruction from the great Maul Mornie. Here's one concern: most people will KICK first before the punching as a prelude to the strikes (softening them up). This doesn't make his approach less valid, but once the kick's been short-circuited, it's followed up with closing in to a clinch and hopefully drop. Certainly, experienced fighters will do this. I've been watching Msr Mornie's work for years and I've always wondered why his routine is in reverse.

i think you failed to understand what Maul has been saying all these years, people need to understand the context of the art. i am from sarawak which borders brunei and culturally we are not that far apart. over here people rarely use kicks, most of the fights ive witnessed are gang attacks with weapons involved. i've never seen anyone here actually use a kick in a fight unless they're in competition or something. ive studied two different styles of silat and both styles dont really focus that much on kicks, they even discourage us from using high kicks in real life situations. maybe if youre in thailand that will happen but not over here where youre more likely to get slashed with a machete

When people teaching the techniques you guys complaining the art is too slow n then comparing with MMA fighter is faster n blah blah... Let me put this way if you are not able to do the right technique means YOU ARE TOO SLOW than your opponent.. that’s why this technique was setup before the opponent throw any punch or kick, so that you can read n counter attack miserably. And if the opponent react the other round, you at least must have another technique to counter back. And of course, practise is needed to master any techniques rather than watch MMA match n complaining. oh ya.. if you are too good in MMA why not gambling.. you must be rich by now.

@@ericpeterson6822 just realised my old comments still got an attention. This drill is only for someone who wants to be more creative in martial arts.. that's why there are so many movement. Of course in silat it still can make a straight punch n KO. Silat Not meant to someone who lazy to learn.. the movement need to be practised perfectly until you no longer depend on the steps.. it just go by itself self conscious n natural.. which we call it self defense n martial arts.. 😄

@ericpeterson6822 3 жыл бұрын
@@faish956 I think for an untrained opponent, you can easily swap hands here and there, slap here and there, but for a realistic scenario, with a trained martial artist, Silat will need to move into fast striking mode. Which renders the whole movement thing redundant. But still, to execute the moves is a feat itself. If someone can do them without even thinking hard, that's a fighting machine there.

The real question is how do you manage to move like 5 times faster than your opponent? That opens up a whole lot of possibilities ;P. Edit: there are way too many serious responses to how to move 5x faster. Maybe I should have worded it “how do you get real opponents to only throw BS attacks in super slow motion”. Because that’s what we’ve got here. I would be shocked if he could pull much of this stuff off against any reasonably competent kickboxer

He is very well know in south east asia, the problem is comparing silat to mma is silat was born on jungle warfare and tribal gangfights, the most effective technique are eye gouging, low blow, fishhook, finger stabbing on your neck,nasty chokes, elbow on the back of your head(which is highly illegal in mma),just like when someone took a hold against his opponent in mma, u could easily the opponent could elbow him hard one the back or the back of his head, this is highly illegal kn mma..silat will be severely disabled if u give them a rule like ufc/mma, its never meant for sports..

Loving the hand work. I assume it's just a case of practice makes perfect to get the sort of speed need for those blocks and counters? As for this kick defences; Front kick, in a street scenario you may get away with this. Use it against an MMA fighter, kickboxer or Thai Boxer and it will maybe work once, then they will change the angle of elevation (whilst kicking) and kick in the now unguarded face. Round kick defences- some of these are straight out of the traditional Jujitsu manual and are very valid... I would be very wary of ever trying to block mid kicks with cutting down forearm blocks. First- you're likely to break your arms, second- if you do deflect, then you've no guard, third- some Thai boxers can throw a mid kick a fraction of a second after throwing their hands... how can your hands be in 2 places? Would it not be better to use legs to block legs and arms to block arms?

EZKILL P thank you for the respectful comments and questions. My POV: For this art you don’t plan on ever using a technique more than once on someone. He should never even gotten the kick off-it’s almost a thought experiment for fun. Thai fighters and MMA people catch kicks all the time-more than makes me comfortable for the reason you say-but clearly it can work. Hands against feet and vice versa I think just depends on what you have to and want to do. Blocking with your legs on bad terrain (this art) is likely a bad idea-almost as bad as kicking high in the first place. The answer is usually, ‘it depends’ and often, ‘just for fun’

Tradidional silat put emphasis on a robust stance to avoid a take down. The traditional practicioners mainly use their hand in fight. It might be assumed to use approximately 40% punch, 20% lock, 20% take down (ground fight). and 20% kick. they mainly throw a low and stright kick to the epigastrium, or use the kick when the opponent lose his balance.

He ist not reading his opponents moves he instead allows his oponnent to start somehow and leading his opponent to use certain moves allowing to him finish fight in a way he want's to. That's lesson behind maul's teaching: Face opponent and let it start the way it's supposed to then end it in any way you want.

I'm no expert by all means but I have some opinions I would like to share. For the people who like to say this and that won't work in a real fight/streetfight.... ofc it won't work perfectly but usually, this kind of thing I believe you have to train till it is in the muscle memory. Your reflects will automatically act that way even you fight cowboy and you say silat won't work but they created silat for war, even now in some military they still practice basic silat. imagine that. not all the training looks practical but it is part of the "training". it is all about your determination, hard work, etc, etc...

yearlongjack - all arts start off doing that. Standing and ground. I've never seen somebody striking with a punch and then blanking while you move his arms as you like without him resisting and punch him multiple times (well except in the movies). Normally a person punch you and if they can't hit you they'll try again in half a second with the other hand, probably coming at you with all his weight and he will move his arm frantically if you try to just push them in rotatory movements... I honestly can't see how this can be applicable. Also, from my kickboxing background I can tell you that blocking kicks that way is very risky. A good fighters will very easily pass your attempt to block and the face is left too exposed. About the "breaking the leg" demonstration, well, unless you are a lot stronger than your opponent you will never be in a stable position to make that move after blocking a roundside kick (which is very dangerous to block with your palms) and your opponent will not just let you push his leg away gently but will try to hit hard making you stumble. The one at 3:37 is quite effective though because he in fact cuts the distance short making the kick useless before the guy can even extend his leg. Probably the only technique that actually works.

Hi Roberto. Thanks for your comments. I pull off trapping and manipulations in sparring all the time (mainly Muay Thai) It works, just not as formally pretty as a demo. It's just rare because people are yet to be educated in it. Lomachenko is probably the most famous example of a trapper right now, but it will get there. Is it high percentage? No, but higher than you think because you're stuffing the counter, or delaying at least. I rarely get tagged for screwing up a trap. Also remember Maul is moving very slowly so you can see what he's doing. He's not swinging in circles, he's throwing the arms at awkward rooting angles. This is a demo of a principle. If you want to talk realism, no one should ever kick mid line in the street.

Silat is very similar to Escrima/Kali. The philosophy is to get the fight over as quickly as possible for the simple the reason that the longer the fight the more chance you will get seriously injured or killed. So all the move are basically parry your attacker and then disable your attacker. It is that simple. Easy to say. Remember people in this culture have bladed weapons. You cannot fool around.
