The Beiramar House, designed by Metropole Architects, is a modern four-bedroom residence spanning 8070 ft² (750 m²), situated in the prestigious Simbithi Golf Estate on the north coast of South Africa, in KwaZulu Natal. The design approach of this project emphasises a harmony between contemporary aesthetics and the surrounding natural environment. The house stands as a striking example of refined modernism, employing materials such as steel, glass, and concrete, combined with meticulous detailing, to create a sophisticated and understated ambiance.
Approaching the residence, its imposing presence is evident, standing out in the urban landscape with a cantilevered form that accentuates its horizontality. An elegant and gently inclined driveway leads visitors from the property's road to a gracefully decorated entrance area, setting the stage for a pleasant aesthetic arrival.
The entrance facade is minimalist, with a triple garage clad in horizontal wooden slats, guiding the eye towards a covered walkway that leads to the main entrance point of the house. This entrance is marked by a large pivot door clad in dark porcelain tiles, ensuring a secure transition to the residence's private space.
Inside, the house unfolds into a voluminous space on the upper level, with an open-plan living area, kitchen, and dining room seamlessly integrating with the outdoor spaces through sliding glass doors. A covered veranda, supported by a tree trunk-shaped steel column, extends the outdoor living space, providing shelter for entertainment, barbecue area, swimming pool, and a small garden.
The master suite, oriented towards the sea view, offers a private retreat complete with a walk-in closet and luxurious bathroom. A distinctive feature of the Beiramar House is the curved organic oak wood-clad ceiling, which provides a surprising element and allows natural light to penetrate, creating a visually engaging experience.
Descending the main staircase, the house becomes more intimate, with a TV room, office, Neolith-clad fireplace, and a cellar offering a cosy retreat. Three bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, each with access to the garden, provide privacy while offering views of the surrounding landscape.
The palette of materials and colours is carefully balanced to complement the natural landscape, while the extensive use of glass breaks down visual barriers between interior and exterior, promoting immersion in the coastal environment. Generous overhangs and steel and aluminium pergolas provide effective sun protection and a dynamic interplay of light and shadow.
Internally, the fusion of colour and texture in the furniture and finishes complements the architectural spaces, creating a contemporary and cohesive aesthetic. Considerations such as orientation, privacy, and response to the subtropical climate contribute to the overall success of the project, offering a visually captivating living experience integrated with the natural environment.
