That’s a lot of work to make a barrel, and that’s with modern machinery. How did they make them centuries ago? How did they cut the wood precise enough to get a tight fit and no leaks, with hand tools? Barrels must have cost a fortune back then.

There’s a film at the Guinness plant showing how they made them, such skills have been lost.

Nowadays everything has to be made fast. The cost of labour is many times more than the cost of the materials. In former times the cost of the material was many times more than the labour. In the factory from the video a barell has to be finished in 1 to 2 hour I guess. 200 years ago a trained craftsman needed 2 days maybe. It's possible even with handtools only. It only needs experiance. I'm a professional woodworker by myself and know what I'm talking about.

In India, carpenters make this without any machines, with rudimentary carpentry tools. Used for storing mango in brine or pickles.

@@glowinaglowina462 for 20 yrs I had a pickle factory. Pickle would stay best in wooden barrels. For mixing of pickle, we used large wooden troughs. Every year, after January, various craftsmen would visit us seeking fresh orders or repair work. The barrels were totally leak proof but the metal rings had to be tightened and the weak ones replaced. Around a decade ago I shut down my business and am out of touch with they carpenters.
