Maybe I'm just getting old, but it still shocks me whenever I'm at the store and see a Hershey bar priced at $2.99. This economy is in big trouble and it's gonna take a few decades of peace and prosperity to turn it around. I really feel sorry for the young people in their 20s and early 30s just starting out, they're going to have it a lot harder than we GenXers did.

Lewiston Michigan is in the same boat. I feel sorry for these money "rich" people. They are always thinking that money can get them through any situation. Unfortunately they will all soon find out just how wrong they are 😔 I never take my drama free lifestyle for granted. They can keep their money... I'll keep my peace of mind 😊

Ding ding ding! My current problem is water. Very little rain in my small area in the last couple of months. The well is running dry and we are having issues with the pressure tank losing pressure (it is only 1 year old and plumber has been called). Yet we keep about 60 gallons of house water in storage. I also keep 100 gallons of "park" water on hand. It comes from our local park that has an artesian well. It is high in mineral content and tastes delicious. It is tested every month. This is a lifesaver right now. I just boil water for dishes. Limit my cooking to reduce dishes. Laundry will be done at my daughter's on Friday (once per week). And jugs of water for sanitation needs. My husband and I've been through this so many times that it becomes an automatic response. Could I dig a new well? Yes. But no guarantees of hitting water. We are already over 200 feet deep. We don't have $20k to "experiment" with. Gotta love eastern Indiana limestone. You take care up there in MI.

The best prep is doing without. For a number of years, our family of 6 lived in a series of campers and buses, as we traveled around the U.S. doing Christian street ministry. We also lived several years off-grid, while getting by on a one-income, minimum-wage job. In situations where you don't have a lot of money to use, you quickly learn how to make-do and innovate the things you need. Innovators will survive when times get hard. Anyone too reliant on the services and products you can buy will not.

With the financial troubles ahead, to remember Weimar Germany as an example. Precious metals were great for buying food or accomodation, but only for the one that food to sell or accomodation to rent. Skills were really helpful. Own no paper, own physical. Food, food, food. Precious metals are for acting as a bridge to get you through to the next financial system. Be flexible but be prepared.

I just had a short discussion with a new budding prepper couple recently. They want to take the homesteader approach and make/do everything. That's not a bad approach at all, the skills they'd learn would serve them for their lifetimes. However, we are now looking into the lions open mouth, and down it's throat. They want to can their food themselves, maybe buy a freeze dryer and so on. I recommended that they purchase their first stage of food and use the skills they have yet to learn to supplement their base supplies. I suggested the normal bulk food staples, packaged at home, and that they invest in a large amount of commercially canned foods in the beginning, not to forget to store water, medical supplies, and so on. No. They want to do it themselves. All of it. Time is running out folks, "someday" passed a long time ago, we are now in a problem solving stage. We need to acquire what we need rather quickly now.

That's our goal too, as well as "doing it like the Ingalls" as much as possible, but even Pa Ingalls had to go into town. Even if you know how to make a spade for a shovel, do you have a steel tree in your backyard to make said spade? If you sew, do you have a thread bush in the backyard to wind yourself up a few spools of it? No.

Wimps. I'm sorry but people in general have grown soft and spoiled rotten. There are a kajillion ways to cool off without AC. It doesn't help that people blast their AC and therefore cannot handle the heat...they're not acclimated to it. I say this as a person who cannot regulate body temperature properly, so I understand it's harder for some people. Harder, but not impossible. Find a way. Roofers manage. Construction workers manage. Garbage collectors manage. Our ancestors managed. We can, too.

Very well said my friend, Although Iive in a urban area I still prep as much as I can for my family. I get into the woods as much as possible trying different techniques and things. It's hard to keep ahead and store everything as food , no place to really hide it , if you have any suggestions, Keep plenty of bottled water, Question is if your going to fill water jugs from urban water , for any length of time how to keep it staying fresh?

The conventional wisdom is to rotate every six months. I do it a little differently. I store water longer, because I have a good filter and will either filter or boil any stored water for our use. Especially after any event. I don’t want to take any chances with bad water, but I also want to have water on hand. So I find this is what works best for us.

If it’s a metal roof and not shingle type, I would have a separate clean container and when after you think the grime has been “washed” away during a storm I would switch to the new container and store to be filtered and used later. The big drawback is that water is heavy.

I have 1 gallon bottles of water with use by dates of 2026; they say if you keep it longer the plastic in the bottles starts leaching into the water. As far as storing water in your own bottles and rotating every 6 months do you keep it cool some how and what type water filter do you use ?
@ModernRefugee
@ModernRefugee 24 күн бұрын
@@bobcragle8124 we use Berkey as a primary. Water is stored in a cool basement. The bottles we use for storage are the larger heavier ones, similar to large smart water bottles washed and sterilized. These bottles have an added benefit of also being able to accept the Sawyer brand of filters. This way I have redundant systems for filtration.
