The power of the bow comes from the fact that its a completely straight stick bent with a string so it already has potential energy
@NateTheScot11 ай бұрын
I was actually hopeful when they mentioned a recurve and recurve string .. then they attached it to the wrong side without actually bending the bow... apparently they wanted to make a bow without even the most BASIC level of understanding of how/why bows work, or even a quick Google search of how to string one... although he mentioned that he'd seen videos of people making them... so I guess he saw the videos without taking ANY of the information on?? Technically not the proper way and honestly this could have ended really bad 😂, also it was already curved inward, i dont know much about longbows and Mongolian bows but my recurve and others are curved outward and curve inward when strung 😂 Edit: i just remembered english hunters and military who used bows would actually shoot the way brian did on the opposite side b/c it was better for speed shooting, lars anderson also does this

Despite any internal flaws with the bow, one issue with accuracy is that their arrow is being shot from the wrong side. A right-handed shooter crosses the arrow to the left side of the bow, and vice-versa for left-handed shooters. You can't look down the arrow if it is not aligned with the bow, permanently aiming to the right.
@ModernRogue6 жыл бұрын
Aha! Yeah. We definitely should learn proper archery techniques.
@JAWTHERENEGADE6 жыл бұрын
Not all archers shot with the arrow crossing sides. The mongolians had the arrow on the same side.
@milkrun23706 жыл бұрын
Many eastern styles of archery have it shot from the right side as it allowed them to fire off arrows faster. Aiming was more about intuition and instinctive while western styles usually had it on the left side. Obviously, they aren't experienced in archery so having the arrow on the left would have been better for this since it is easier to pick up.
@harveychallinor3676 жыл бұрын
what side you place your arrow on is personal opinion, also looking down an arrow is plain impractical
@cerberv50406 жыл бұрын
Well, technically this can be countered by using your thumb draw. Which i suspect was the way they were learning the horse archery.

3:50 "How bad do you think the chemicals we're inhaling are ?" Well, when burnt PVC creates hydrochloric acid, but I'm sure i didn't get hot enough for that right? ...right? The atmosphere in this episode was great enough that I don't even care if the bow couldn't kill orcs reliably.

You've done some archery stuff, did you not notice them unstrug? A bow's power comes from bending it. The simplest designed bows like a longbow, are straight, it is only curved after it's strung and that puts the power in the limbs. But longbows are... long. If you want a shorter bow like the Mongolian one you shot you have to curve the limbs. BUT you curve them in the opposite direction, forward towards the target, so when you bend them back they bend extra far, generating more power then a straight limb would for the same length. The premade bow string has 2 loops, a big and a small. The big one goes on first, but it goes on the limb past the notch towards the handgrip. Then you put the small one in the notch on the other side. Now you bend the bow and slide the big loop back up the limb into the notch as you bend the bow. Heres a short video on how to do it. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hc6mradovtGZd3U.html Now here's the part I dont get.There are many PVC bowyers making vids on KZfaq, and some even describe what they are lerning as they make their bows. You even talked about seeing vids. How did you go and make all the same mistakes they did, using their methods but not learning from seeing them? BTW... any bow should not be kept strung while its not in use. It weakens the limbs and hastens the time till the string will break. ALSO DRY FIRING A BOW IS BAD. VERY BAD. AND YOU SHOULD FEEL BAD. It is a lot like blocking the muzzle of a gun when you fire it. When you draw the bow you put potential energy into it which it transfers to the arrow when you release. No arrow, nowhere for that energy to go except to reverberate through your limbs. BOW EVENTUALLY GOES BOOM. If its pvc, it only cost you a few bucks and some time, but a new set of limbs for a takedown bow can be very expensive.

Some tips for future archery endeavors. Use feather fetching instead of plastic vanes. The feathers collapse as they pass the riser (where your hand is on the bow) and don't kick out as bad. Secondly, when using your fingers instead of a thumb draw, you want to place the arrow on the top of your knuckles on your bow hand. Lastly, avoid bulky gloves as they prevent a smooth release. Oh, and keep that elbow up...straight line from bow hand to elbow.

The reason there's one larger loop on the bowstring is that some bows are strung by sliding the larger loop down the arm of the bow, fitting the smaller loop at the end of the other arm and then, when you bend the bow, you slide the large loop up the arm and into the retaining slots - rather than trying to bend the bow far enough to get the loop over the _end_ of the arm.

Please also do an Episode on Disguises. You'd both come up with an disguise and to test them you might meet at a cafe or something. While one of you puts on their disguise in the cafe's restroom the other leaves the cafe and sits down on a bench around the corner. The person on the bench would wear a vest or a coat with about 3-5 decent sized buttons. Of which he would unbutton any number he wants. The disguised person than has to walk past the person on the bench, count the buttons and walk around the next corner. From there he has to text the number of still buttoned buttons to win. The guy on the bench maybe has to take a picture of the disguised guy to prove that he recognised him. Or he just calls him out when he walks by. Either way is fine. Then you'd switch roles.

Heh. That sounds like fun. I've been trying to structure a disguise episode for a while now.

My brothers and I have been using PVC bows for our own version of LARP that we play; at one point we put foam pads on curtain hangers to use as arrows.

you should check out ZNA productions, on his channel he puts fiberglass rods in the pvc to increase the draw weight of the bow, he has done multiple designs.

true, by actually bending the PVC instead of heating it up and forming it, it should already become more powerful

I really enjoyed this video. And, while I haven't made a pvc bow myself, I have a few suggestions that could help. First, with as easy as it was to bend, you probably could make a recurve without much trouble, and not only will it improve the power of the bow, it'll be less likely for the acting to slide off. Two, if you don't have a dremel tool (why wouldn't you, they are awesome!) you should definitely invest in one and get some carving bits. You could, for example, use one to make a quick, smooth notch for the string that's less likely to wear out the loop of the string. Third, if you're shooting right-handed (and not on horse back), the arrow goes along the left side of the bow, not the right. Fourth, you really should work on your form to get more consistent shooting (not that what you were doing want fun to watch). Fifth, after making the bow, find out what the draw weight is so you can get the right arrows for it. The last one is a bit complicated, but the reason has to do with what's called the archer's paradox. When launched from a bow, arrows bend back and forth...meaning the tip doesn't go in a straight line. All arrows have a spine rating which determines how much that happens based mainly on the weight off the bow. You actually want some "bendiness" as the string and shaft are in line which causes the arrow to get deflected, which the "bendiness" corrects for (simplified explication). Again, I think this was talked about in the mounted archery episode. Anyway, I'd love to see an episode where you revisit now making and see if you can improve on your pvc bow. Basically, I'm hoping you can manage to more effectively shot the dummy (and not reset the injury counter 😝).

Dustin the WIN! Still wasn't the "simplest way" I made mine a few years ago with a thinner pipe, paracord, and a file. Just cut notches in each end and tied the cord. Works great.

Alex Lawson You can put fiberglass rods inside to increase power as well
@alexlawson41736 жыл бұрын
I was actually planning on doing that but decided I didn't need the extra power. Instead, since I didn't have any arrows, I cut the rods into arrow length. p.s. bad idea. my hands were covered in fiberglass slivers xD

Should've done 1/2 inch, I used to make these all the time and you can easily get 40lb draw with the effectiveness of a 75lb And you're right handed so put the arrow on the left side of the bow and slightly tilt it
@GrumpyTy34er Жыл бұрын
It's funny because if you're doing a longbow style bow, you don't even have to bend it at all. Usually you just reinforce it with either strapping tape or you can use fiberglass driveway markers on the inside
@brandonpolk82905 жыл бұрын
I made one about 1 1/2 years ago andni used fiberglass druveway markers to increase the power inside the pvc pipe, which allowed me to make it shorter for better comfort
