00:01 Focus on the pain and struggle to align with what you can accomplish. 01:27 Discipline equals the importance of the goal and psychological enjoyment minus the psychological cost. 02:46 Health is the first priority for everything I love and care about. 04:05 Discipline is the key to effective time management and life choices. 05:23 Discipline equation is crucial for staying on track 06:40 Discipline equation: behavior will occur if positive outcome minus friction exceeds zero. 07:56 Many people are driven by pain rather than pleasure. 09:21 Deep shame and insecurity drove me to obsessiveness. if useful for you , than like my comment

I’ve been thinking a lot about what makes discipline lately, or more precisely, what makes us do stuff. I think there is an extra factor in that equation, and it’s something like your ability to ignore/repress/overcome friction, it detracts from that feeling of friction by making it less potent. Let's call it willpower. So the equation would be something like Discipline = Goal Importance + Pursuit pleasure - ( Pursuit pain - Willpower ). This is a factor that can be trained over time. What do you think?

The Discipline Equation: Discipline = Importance of the Goal + Psychological Enjoyment - Psychological Cost. Example: Simon Sinek taking the bins out involves high importance (avoiding fines) and low enjoyment, but the high importance ensures the task is done.

The discipline equation discussed here is a powerful way to understand how our behaviors are influenced. It's all about balancing the importance of a goal, the psychological enjoyment we derive from pursuing it, and the psychological cost. This equation, as explained by Stephen, can apply to various aspects of our lives, from fitness to creative pursuits. It's a reminder that discipline often involves finding the right balance between these factors. Just as Mark Manson's quote highlights, it's crucial to consider what pain we're willing to endure in our pursuit of meaningful goals. This insight from Stephen resonates with me and echoes the teachings of @LisaHaisha, who emphasizes the importance of self-discovery and self-acceptance in our journey to live authentically and purposefully.

This is such an interesting and valuable subject matter. Many people don't realise that recovering from past trauma and difficulties involves the pain of revisiting these and the pain of doing work on yourself in order to change the future outcome. So there is pain involved, always... but if you are prepared to put yourself through this pain the future can be massively changed.

- “The most important question to ask is what pain do you want in your life, what are you willing to struggle for? Anything worthwhile is going to require some degree of pain and struggle, so if your oriented towards the pain and struggle your probably going to be more aligned with what your capable of accomplishing, rather than if you just orientate towards the pleasures” - Mark Manson - Discipline Equation: Discipline = The importance of the goal + the psychological enjoyment you get in the pursuit of the goal - the psychological cost of the pursuit of the goal - If you want to do achieve a goal you can put things in the way of your daily life that would force you to complete and progress you further towards your goal (Ex. Steven Barlett wanted to be a DJ but wouldn’t put any practice into it then he put his DJ kit in the kitchen and every time he went to eat he’d be reminded of it and end up going for 4 hours without even realizing it) - Make it as easy as possible to do or to start doing - Are you driven or are you drove, are you trying to prove someone who said you’ll never do something wrong or are you trying to prove someone who supported you right?

good BUT you have to realize that they don't care. so if it works for you, cool but you're the one having the experience so do it for yourself ONLY. There is no 'revenge'. their comments were throwaway. they won't come to worship you for proving them wrong. You can use their disses for motivation but only insofar as you find what YOU want to do for your own reasons and enjoyment. because that magical day where they say "oh we were so wrong about you" will never come and if that's the only thing that is keeping you doing what you're doing, that is a thin reason, a house of cards

One of the best clips I’ve ever watched. I’d encourage everyone to use the matrix to assess different examples in your own life and then it will become clear why you’re not doing something. Then if you want to start doing it you have to address the 3 parts and make them easier/more enjoyable/ less costly.

I like the sound of that equation, I'm going to apply to some personal aspects and see where it takes me. I wouldn't want to say I've been in a rut for a little bit, but I've recently got into a hamster wheel, so maybe it'll help with some sort of direction... something you've shown discipline in: 1. how much it matters - /10 2. enjoyment from the pursuit - /10 3. amount of friction involved - /10 (1+2)-3=

I really connect to where Steven realised all the time management techniques were pointless without a core issue being addressed that facilities them all. I’ve come to the realisation that no amount of techniques for taking action and pursuing what you want to pursue are going to work if you don’t see a point to your self and life. If you perceive yourself as being utterly pointless, you will never see the point in any atomic habit, building and executing any routine, because the foundation is missing and it’s all inherently pointless. Your view of yourself has to be that you, and therefore improving you, are worth it and will mean anything in the world

But ultimately that (at least for me) is the BIGGEST cause for a lack of self discipline-the why. Why is this important? Why does this benefit me? Why should I keep enduring discomfort to achieve this? It is easy to say that exercise, eating healthy, saving for retirement, et cetera all will benefit you a few months or, a few years in the future but, THAT'S THE PROBLEM! All those benefits will not immediately be seen and humans need to experience immediately rewards and validations to continue to do something; especially something uncomfortable.
@Sully_one
@Sully_one 10 ай бұрын
@@333angeleyesSo here the why is the regret that you will feel after years of neglecting that part because it didn't give you short term reward. Which is one of the biggest pains you can experience in your life, regret. Knowing that you could have been so much, but you were too "lazy" & "unmotivated" to become it. Life is very comfortable in the modern time, the exact reason why we have so many depressed and sad people Because they held on to their comfort for so long, that over time they don't have anything going on in their life. Nothing to persue, nothing to wake up excited for, shameful to look at themselves in the mirror Pick your hard. Do it now because that's the only time that you get to choose.

The "pain" argument is not transferable nor a static framework. If ever you want to consider using it, it has to be dynamic. Pain or resilience thresholds are different for many people. And they benefit and hinder different aspects. We complicate sh*t way to much. If you honestly believe/know that, it must/should be done or that you need/want it, you'll actually do it. Using the rubbish bin example; if you do not want to sit in a house of sh*t and disgust, then you will clean your f-ing house. You also know, it needs to be done otherwise x,y,z cost will be incurred.

Dopamine - Limbic Friction Motivation is the initial dopaminergic indicator for pursuit. Pleasure from pursuing a task is the continuous outflow of dopamine. Limbic friction is just a word used for the hump of commencing a task.

I like how he philosophically organized it. (Big Why)+(Enjoyment; which I would say is correlated with Big Why)-(Resistance). Meaning, underlying all this, Nietzsche’s quote stands true: “with a large enough why, a man can endure any how.”

Also explains why most people who are worse off strive to be better. Their why is much more painful than other people’s. That’s when they got their lows and strive to go further. And pain will biologically stick to memory harder than pleasure.

We do this risk reward assessment subconsciously all the time. Going back it would be "how important is it that I get to this honey in order not to starve" vs "how many bee stings am I willing to take for it". That decision would have been made almost instantly. Now days, I'm guessing none of the viewers are starving and bee stings are quite abstract.

Chris, think about how it all started with “Scotty doean’t know”. Started as a shallow soundtrack and became so profound understanding about relationships

Wow, really interesting episode. I would even add social conformity (+) or social resistance (-) could be added to the discipline equation. Social pressure is a powerful extrinsic force in its own right. Like if you agree.

It's about pain reallocation. Imagine a box: On one side you have the pain associated with hard work, discipline, training, commitment... On the other side you have the pain associated with sucking, laziness, not living up to your potential. The bar can move towards either side but it's not about getting rid of pain, but about how much of each kind of pain are you willing to take.

Love these episodes but seems like there’s sooooo much quote reading. I think Rich Roll called one of them “bro science quotes.” Just curious if anyone else is seeing too much of this or is it just me?
