Dr Joe Henrich gives his opinion on the modern dating market. Were our ancestors monogamous? Are monogamous relationships natural? What does Evolutionary Biology say about Tinder and dating apps? Why are men being left behind? Is modern masculinity dangerous? Is there an Evolutionary Psychology explanation for the Red Pill and incels?

1. He's not mentioning that there has always been massive amounts of prostitutes servicing the unmarried men - until recently. 2. He's not bringing up the fact 'women having a choice in the matter' is a blip on the radar of history. Women weren't 'choosing to be in harems'. lol They were war brides. All in all, his disingenuous take is probably more due to the blind spots caused from the egalitarianism that has taken over so called 'experts'. They all suffer from bad optics, on any given subject - especially history.

@@Winterascent well put... potato chips another example, they have that taste of carbohydrates/calories that we evolved to crave for energy, but lack the nutrient profile natural foods have. You could perhaps extend this to other things... perhaps television has replaced campfire stories we grew to rely on in our ancient tribes... TV tells us stories but are not campfires, so we get the end result but not the whole experience, leading to lack of nutrition in ways that are perhaps currently unknown to us.

@@Winterascent My friend.. 1. there is no false reality. If it exits, it's real, if it's real it is true and not false. You are negating the complicated nature of our existence into a single argument based on dopamine receptors that are not nearly as important as you believe they are and I know you read the study about mice, idc. They are mice not men. Truth is, reality has changed, progress requires new systems of classification. Society in general is sick, yet the time people spend on the internet nowadays is no different then time they used to spend on Television 60 years ago. This is corroborated, especially amongst young people. 2. "real world happiness" thee f is that suppose to mean? Are you talking about the feeling of being a happy person? That was not different a hundred years ago. Many diaries of men and books have covered the uselessness of the male existence in times of peace, and the waste of existence in the times of war. None of these things are new, they always had been there, but i would lie if I wouldn't say that current society has exacerbate the conditions. 3. It's only men that face this problem, in specifically those who see them as men first before anything else. People who identify themselves through other avenues and put those names on the top spot seem to be doing much better. Personally, I can't help you with anything here, that's just kinda what one can observe objectively. In science there is this thing that is kinda simple, so when a system has worked for centuries or hundred of years but cracks start showing, then it reached it's limits. If this happens, you find a better system that can explain the new thing and everything previously too. Like... round earth (Leonardo the maaaaad man) or Spacetime... like let me phrase it like this: If existence, space and time itself are questioned constantly, and old theories that worked for decades are discarded... why the f y'alll still using things form 10000 as a basis or any point of actual relevance to your llife? “Newton had the best description of gravity for a long time but it started to fray around the edges. And Einstein provided a more complete theory. Today we are seeing Einstein’s theories starting to fray around the edges,” I understand why y'alll are focused on science like biology, but are you telling thousands of years of evolution and all you are is still a primitive animal acting on instincts? Seriously... that's how most see themselves here? wtf, why? Sociology and Psychology are sciences too, look into that. But even more than that, why y'all so focused on these superficial biology questions. We have a brain, the thing that makes us smart and like no other species. It gave us language...maybe study some linguistics, agnotology, or even: Maybe study some neurology... and you'll find that we don't know jack shit about what even consciousness is, so how y'all expect regular interpretations of physical traits to be the fucking answer to a conundrum caused by an entire different organism (=used poetically)= , it's so what fucky fuck fuck stupid my dudes, come one. Muscles good, but brain need workout too. Here is my solution, y'all need purpose? Then go make figuring out how the brain works your purpose and go to colleges and study that shit. Idc if you are 50 or 60, or else y'all think yourself to death, but honestly I'm not a man, I suppose I tried to be one for a while but it just didn't fit, so I can't answer the question nor is it my place to do so. Hope y'all figure it out, y'all neeeded it

I’m from Japan. "Herbivore" (or 草食男子=Herbivore Boy/Guy)" is not a term that describes men with feminine aesthetics - it’s a term used to describe men with passive attitudes in regards to dating and the pursuit of a romantic/sexual partner. Looking like a male K-pop star is considered attractive by Japanese Gen-Z standards, and plus, one can look like that and still be quite assertive when it comes to dating. Being pale, skinny and having longer hair does not a Herbivore Boy make. Culturally, Japanese (East Asian) women have always been expected to be (or at least act) docile, submissive, passive.. basically “seen, not heard”. However, the huge economic bubble the country experienced in the '80s and the passing of the Gender Equal Employment Opportunity Law, greatly shifted traditional mentality around gender roles and changed it for good. As Japanese women became more independent, they became much more assertive in private as well as in romance; J-pop culture followed in the footsteps of Hollywood and started to show women being more forward and open about relationships/sex; women dated more and experienced relationships before marrying their romantic partners, and arranged marriages (where one would be paired off with someone from a similar socioeconomic background/status) became extremely rare. Fast forward to the 2000’s when Japan’s economy started to slowly recover before it crashed again in 2008: The early '00s were a time when Tokyo’s nightlife flourished, especially around the new urban developments in Roppongi (a business and nightlife district for Yuppies and handsomely paid expats; i.e. Goldman Sachs, Lehman Bros, Hedge funds, Google, TV stations, all had offices there). The area was the place to be after work, and bars and restaurants were filled with pretty girls from all parts of the country who were out on the hunt to find investment bankers and tech founder millionaires. Not so coincidently, “Sex and the City” became a cultural sensation amongst young Japanese women living in big cities. These women popped champagne, dined wagyu steak, and went after whatever and whoever they wanted. This is when the term “Carnivore Girls” was invented and became popular. As more women became assertive in romance and at trying to land the best possible partner they could find (=richer, taller, funnier, better looking, better educated, more suave, etc), the shyer/more passive men who were without any of these particular strengths mentioned above, found themselves quite lost. This probably also has a lot to do with Japanese men historically never having to do much in terms of pursuing women. In the past, all they had to do was get a decent degree from a decent school, have a stable job, earn an average income, and voila, a marriage would be arranged for them. With no game and no strong urge to pursue women including the ones they were attracted to, they retreated into a world of their own, ultimately removing themselves from the “mating" market. Henceforth, they became known as “Herbivore Boys”, the counterpart to "Carnivore Girls". ***FYI: Herbivore and a Hikikomori are totally different things. Hikikomori often have social anxiety due to being bullied mercilessly at school, and refuse to partake in IRL society period, including being a part of the workforce, not just dating. Some have not left their bedroom in years. As a result, they are more active online, immersing themselves in the virtual world like gaming, anime, VR etc. Those who are intensely into anime and anime porn etc are called Otaku, probably similar to what Reddit calls weebos(?), and may live in their mother's basement.

@@newwavepop You're absolutely correct, it was Japan who started the androgynous aesthetic trend and boybands. As a country with a small population, Korea strategically exported whatever they could to expand their economy, including its entertainment industry. Since K-pop has wider recognition and larger presence internationally, I understand and have no problem with it universally being referred to as the K-pop look. One stark difference between the two though, is that you have to be tall to be a K-pop star (180cm/5ft10 and over) where as J-pop stars can sometimes be 165cm/5ft4 or so in height. But then again, average height for Japanese women is 149cm/4ft9..

Thank you for the excellent explanation. MGTOW is like Herbivore Men, but covers a broader area. Largely Men Going Their Own Way. Men seem to drift into this when they realize that maybe 5% of men are getting the attention of 90% of women. This leaves about 90% of men getting attention of 10% women. This causes a general disinterest in wanting part of dating at all. It has various levels of interest from MGTOW Monks who have sworn off all dealings with women. There are others who don’t want to live with women and not be married. There are many that date carefully. They may get married or are married, but think that things are grossly unfair to men. The family court system in the United States is robbery. I suspect in Canada it is worse than the US. A man can lose years of hard work and never see his children. 50% of all marriages end in divorce. Women start 70% of all divorces. US Women and most Western Nations are wholly unsuited for marriage. Most women in the United States spend a lot of their college age years chasing these 4.5% top males. They have sexual relations with different top males starting at 19 to about 26. Starting at about 24 to 28; they find it more difficult to get with these top males. These males are interested in the younger women. Women around 29 start looking for husbands. Their looks are not what they once were. Having been with top males, women feel they should be able to lock down a top male for themselves. Not realizing that while a woman will not normally date downwards, men will always look to be sexual. As a result, top males will mate with women who are below them. Many women grossly over value themselves. This leads to bitterness and resentment when a pairing that is more honest is available. The women feel life cheated them. They look for an opportunity to get to something that they feel is more like what they deserve. This leads women to the family court system.

I believe the issue is marrying beyond your 30s. When people beyond 30 want to get married they don't want to build a life together, you want to add them to the life they've built already. Marrying younger means building a life together, means having a relationship based on shared core values. It means walking through life together as you both grow.

A cellphone that is as addictive as possible and hyper-stimulus like porn or the hyper-palatable food we trade for profit is NOT nature. That's not survival of the fittest. It's not so much that these young boys are weak, they're being encouraged to behave a certain way by their environment. An elementary school kid can't fail themselves because they're the responsibility of their parents and broader society. Again, you oversimplify the issue by blaming the individual. That may work to give you a sense of control in your world as an adult (in fact it's proven to in Psychology literature like Carol Dweck's work on mindset), but it's not useful when we're talking about kids and the youth.

Times changed. The way women approach dating has changed. Men have to update their game too. Now you are just a disposable product on a conveyer belt. There were 10 guys before you, and there are 100 after, and despite men getting told by women that they are the special one it's total bs. A woman will leave you as fast as she can, when a better opportunity appears. I decided to stop simping for anyone ever again. Not gonna spend 2+ years again of building a relationship just to watch them desperately look for attention half naked on tik tok pretending it's not that like at all, like I'm a fool who doesn't see the obvious. Start looking at relationships as business deals. In reality that's all that ever was and will ever be. It's an exchange of goods. You have something they want, and they have something you want. The crucial part is that it's up to you to make your goods irresistible. Give them that which from their perspective is a deal they can't miss out on. 50/50 value exchange is not enough, at least 60/40 and truly as high as you manage to make it work for you. The key is to flip the game, don't come to them, present yourself in such a way that it would be foolish for them to not come to you. This way your relationship will be way more stable, and you will gain more control over yourself than otherwise. Don't be a simp, be a modern pimp.

I have connected with someone I really liked, but she warned she may have the need to detach after time due to her own trauma fears, and that's fine, but I don't think I'm trying this again. Personally I feel this fundamentally starts with nutrition. Whether obese or not, highly processed foods containing vegetable oils, sugar and grain affects mood and rational brain function. We need to get back to eating whole foods - preferably a diet high in fatty meat. The improvement is mental wellness and physical health would improve dating dramatically. Same goes for a (chosen) single life made of maybe a few longer relationships, like a few years here and there, and other shorter span partners. You can look at that as a very varied, rich and exciting love/relationship life. For this last type of love life, your motto "there is beauty beauty in the journey" also applies, although it's a more personal journey, a self development one. High earning women shouldn't ignore men who could be a good father, protector, etc just because they can't pay the bills. Just like men shouldn't leave their wives for a younger model. As they were talking about in the video- it's in our nature for women to take on more of a caregiver role which produces less income and goods and for males to take on a provider role but now that women are capable of taking on the provider role its going to be very hard to change the nature of our mindsets- plus from a biological standpoint it just doesn't make sense for women to take on the provider role and men take on the caregiver role. Men are more physically capable and completely incapable of giving birth- it seemed right for equal opportunity for either gender in the social competence hierarchy but like they state in the video it is causing a lot of complications we don't yet understand well enough to have a solution for.

If you apply that same logic to women, then their hypergamy is toxic and harming our society. I'm also down for a return to traditional morals and gender roles, but that seems like a non-starter these days. So I'm suggesting alternatives that isn't a polygamous dating culture. A major reason why everyone converted to Catholicism when it arrived on scene: it was really, really good for relationships between the sexes. The man must be publicly committed to the woman before sex. The man must be permanently bound to the woman after sex. The man could only have one sexual partner, unless she dies. The man is even supposed to sacrifice himself for his sexual partner. It genuinely solves all of the problems mentioned here. It even valorizes the sexless life of celibacy and put such men in service of society. And of course, it works the other direction as well. People’s lives were made much better when they became Catholic. Perhaps after a few generations of societal breakdown, people will rediscover the genius of the Catholic system their ancestors rejected.

Obviously, what occurred regarding sexual abuse was a horrendous failure, and we need to understand all of the different factors that contributed to it occurring. Not only did a historically very well behaved population begin committing grievous crimes at the same rate as the general population, but a generation of bishops simply did not apply the Church's own unambiguous laws to those who committed the abuse. The point is that there should be equality in the public forum, which intimates that a complaint from women should be considered in the same way as if it were stated by a man and vice versa. @@sallyhemings2295 Plenty of women complain all the time about their standards in men. Men have good reason to complain because they can be rejected by virtually all women, whereas women have plenty of men willing to do date them at any given time. Most men want kids too, and would be willing to have them with a wide swath of the female population. The same cannot be said about women who are the gatekeepers of child bearing, and so again, it makes sense that a trend of women not having kids would be alarming to men, who cannot have children but on average want them. Women however can have kids whenever they want, assuming they are biologically able to. So it's not as much that men want to control a woman's reproduction, but we just never imagined a world where it might not happen for us, which would be upsetting to almost anyone who wants children. Also, the whole "control" idea is pretty played out. Does anyone really believe that these mass movements are about equality, rather than just advocacy and promotion. No one wants to control women, but we would like what prior generations had, which was a family. This would be akin to saying that women just want to control men's labor when women lobby for promotion into industries where they are less represented.

Chris please! Have you seen the documentary “Future Shock”? I found it on KZfaq, made in 1972 and Features Olson Welles as the narrator. He speaks about the amount of information being consumed by our minds and how it’s affecting us in ways unknown. Considering there’s been nearly no talk on the subject since and it being 50 yrs later I feel it’s a subject that needs unraveling once again. I would love to see your take on this subject! I truly believe this could be a root problem for the way things are progressing. I question can our minds process the amount of information coming in and can we still progress in the same manner we did in the past? For millennium we’ve been simple beings then bam, tech hits us in the face! Is tech like everything else, good in moderation? Is tech a drug? The whole world seems to be mid party, high as fk on tech and speaking about it is like fk off man we’re still partying 🥳 peace guys✌️

I see technology encroaching into the areas of “relationships” where human connections are disappearing. I think as soon as the artificial womb and the artificial egg become a reality we will finally see this reach it’s conclusion. As of now men have not started the “I don’t need a woman” chant the way women have. But I see that is a possible outcome as this situation becomes more pronounced.

@@garbonomics Yeah, true. A good point, as clearly artificial insemination has existed for a long time and yet adoption, though increasing, is slow. I'd say it's still a little bit taboo, and it certainly isn't a particularly desirable option. I have no doubt that artificial wombs will become reality, eventually. But it's possible neither technology will ever be truly embraced by society. The large majority of people who do reproduce probably don't do it for raw, practical reasons. They do it because they're fulfilling a desired life pattern that involves creating a family and having a partner. I imagine it would take quite a few generations of artificial breeding to change that instinct. And god knows what cluster fuck of culture would be required to keep such a society from destroying itself.

The “men at the top” are a factor, maybe, but even a billionaire can only monopolize so many women (and there are only so many billionaires). I think the redistribution of wealth, by government, from males and to females that plays a bigger role. If women are financially supported by the government (that is, by taxes paid in majority by men), and they can get that support at no cost to themselves (without having to engage in the labor of being a wife and mother), it’s not going to motivate people to settle down with a reliable husband during their youth. It’s like if women had to pay a tax to subsidize the creation and maintenance of sexbots for men. It would diminish men’s desire to form relationships with women, WHILE costing the women a percentage of the fruits of their labor. It’s a government-enforced situation where you have to pay money to subsidize a system that works to your detriment. The welfare state is a method of removing resources from working-age young men in order to subsidize women and (other people’s) children.

I was fat and awkward for most of my teenagehood and early adulthood, so as a young woman it was... Not easy to find a date, and of the men I went on a few dates with they were either super self conscious about their situation (single fathers) or they felt entitled to sex because they bought me a drink once. I never found success on dating sites (this was before tinder lmao) and it wasn't like I was looking for hot rich dudes or something, I know I'm not beautiful/hot and that I'm average, so I would hit up average dudes, and met some nice guys but they expected sex really fast and I just wasn't comfortable doing that. I only managed to find success outside dating sites and places where you could share hobbies or whatever, I met the love of my life that way and we married and had kids, and I've never been happier. I feel like... The dating sites/apps are just no good for most people- you can find someone willing to fuck you maybe but beyond that it was... Difficult to find someone interested in something long term.

The advice I would give for women who have a similar experience as you (which I assume is a lot of them) is to basically keep going on dates until you find someone. Girls have the privilage of having so many matches from "average men" that you can literally go on 7 dates a week if you want, so as long as you have a good strategy and you put in the effort then its just a numbers game at that point. A womans approach on online dating should be high effort and rigorous, girls need to try their hardest to identify red flags (such as expecting sex really fast), go on lots of dates and look for a guy that you enjoy hanging out with, enjoy talking to and doesn't pressure you for sex ... once the guy has all 3 of those things then the last thing girls need to is ask themselves "after having spent time with this man am I attracted to him?" The issue is most women give up way too early, only match with fuckboys, and are very low effort in terms of how many dates they go on and how engaged they are in conversation. So if a girl does the strategy that I mentioned they're basically guaranteed to find a guy who's compatible with them since every other girl is not doing that strategy.

@@Haywire5714 This is probably true, I've known lots of women who had been in similar circumstances as me but never found anyone they found worthwhile- I dunno if maybe they also had too high of standards, I know THAT is a big issue with women dating. My standards were never super high, I didn't care if he was a high earner or not. My husband, before we married, was living in his mom's basement and working at Goodwill... That didn't matter too me, we were compatable in so many ways that his job status wasn't much of a factor. I dunno what young men can do, though. I have seen a lot of their complaints, and bitterness, and I know it's not unfounded. I was just hoping my comment could assure some of them that not all women are hopping on the first dick they find or spending their youth fucking "chads" or whatever.

@@wj1040 men can't really do anything except improve their attractiveness/picture taking skills to the point where women will match with them. However this isn't realistic which is why I don't encourage men to use online dating. However I would encourage women to use online dating since they are guaranteed to find someone that they're compatible with if they have the right strategy. Now when it comes to women primarily matching with hot guys (in a post tinder world mind you) I'd say there's a lot of evidence to support that. You might not have done so yourself in a pre tinder world but your personal experience doesn't mean a whole lot in my eyes since it was so long ago and you are only 1 person. In a post tinder world where women do have lots of options all the time, the majority of women who use online dating might not be fucking hot guys from tinder but they're certainly matching with them and they're certainly not matching with that many guys who do not fit that criteria. And that is what needs to change first and foremost, there are a lot of issues that can arise after the match takes place but unless women start matching with a wider variety of men then online dating is doomed to get even worse over time than what it is today. (Alternatively the online dating app itself could be designed in a way where men have more of a chance which is what I personally hope happens)

I think what is happening is, right now, we have a generation of women who were pushed and prompted by their families (mostly mothers) and environment to be as good or better than the men in their environment. In the '60's, this created a whole generation of women who forgot that they only have a certain amount of time to reproduce. You can't have your cake and eat it, too. And just because your mother wasn't able to get her PhD (which was most likely due to her aptitude not opportunity), doesn't mean you have to live HER life for her! As a women, I can tell you, men are VISUAL creatures. A 45 year old women that can not reproduce is not something men are sexually attracted to regardless of being a low status male or not. Mother nature and gravity is cruel, you have stages in your life that give you opportunities. Those are choices you make. We need a partner with whom we can solve life's big and small problems with, not a slush fund. Solving problems with a mate over time reinforces relationship bonds like soldiers who served together. Resourceful men tend to have money. In my experience and observations, modern women are way too hung up on looks and how fun the guy is. In the past, this was avoided because you had responsible adults arranging the marriages of their children. It can't happen again because: 1) We no longer have enough responsible adults and 2) People tend to not involve their parents in their mate decisions. I think education could solve a part of that problem. Enforced monogamy did, so why not try to teach young people how men and women think, what are the outcome for both genders if they just follow their feelings and the benefits of monogamy for both genders. Smart women would understand that they should step down a bit and get a man who's not an astronaut.

I think that his description is a bit off and inapplicable. I've always seen humans as more similar to birds. Birds need to pair bond in order to raise successful offspring. So do humans. Paired birds when given the opportunity to get genetic material without being caught by their mate will cheat. This increases genetic diversity while also tricking a mate into raising someone else's offspring. It's painfully obvious children need both parents, we need to pair bond. There is a correlation causation problem with connecting species mating strategy and current behavior. Biology is not the cause or complete explanation of what's occurring and it's disingenuous and dangerous to reduce it to that.

Quit the dating apps and meet real live people. Life occurs in person, not behind a screen. The same person that you'd be fine with in person is often the same person you'd reject when you go through your list of 'options' in an app. Funny that the dip in male sex occurs right when the smart phone came out. That's not a coincidence. Ditch the apps.

Women in previous generations weren't necessarily happy with their partner, as they often married young, before they knew much about themselves or life in general. However, in many countries divorce simply wasn't an option, so they remained stuck with their husbands, even where they realised they were their intellectual superior.
@nyetzdyec3391
@nyetzdyec3391 2 жыл бұрын
Ignoring all of the other problems with your comment... A woman could still respect a man's hard work on THEIR behalf, even if he happened to be her intellectual inferior. Since the man's work was also often dangerous, she could also respect his courage. Since a man who had a wife and kids HAD to work harder, and face even more danger because of it, a man who had a wife and kids DESERVED more respect. Consider this scenario... Time... 1400's to about 1940's... Occupation, Blacksmith (farrier, aka horse-shoer) Single Man - has to shoe X horses "to make ends meet". Family man with one wife and 3 kids - has to shoe 2.5-3x MORE horses. Each horse shod presents the possibilities of either crippling or killing the man. An unmarried blacksmith can refuse to shoe a horse which is known to be more dangerous, vicious, etc... but the blacksmith with a family MUST shoe more horses... and thus is less likely to be ABLE to refuse to shoe a dangerous horse. (Likewise a farmer had to clear, plow, plant, harvest more... a sawyer had to cut more timber, a miller had to mill more, a miner had to mine more... a rancher had "to ranch" more... a teamster had to carry more freight, or for longer distances, or to more dangerous places, etc... and ALL of these were dangerous jobs... and many of them STILL are.) Back then, women NEEDED men... and they KNEW it. These days, women STILL need men... but far too many of them are so stupid they DON'T know it. In turn, this not only leads to a LACK of respect... it actively breeds CONTEMPT. Note - I'm talking about Western women, not Asians or Africans. The more primitive, less advanced, a society is, the more it needs its men to do the hard work, and the more the women will KNOW it.

Drive, ambition and motivation come from work and trading (my money making hobby). Anything else I need from a woman can be rented for an evening with $40-$80 in appetizers and drinks - but I ain't interested enough to pursue that. The reward is not worth the effort. Joe needs to specific about which tribes in Africa. In some cultures here, after initiation, men are given land, some animals and a home is built. So they did not start from zero. Some still practice this to date. The economic shift due to more women in the workforce, hence shift in market votes towards the service economy plus externalities, add the internet has led to an exacerbation of hypergamous filtering towards - cultural breakdown has allowed the extreme sides of women's instinct. So males who are fittest, genetically & monetarily have the best pick. However, as with markets, this is different all over the globe i.e. hypergamy is a feature - in some parts of the world there are anthropological checks due to culture.

Men who are fittest don't really have the best pick. Young women specifically go for a mans height and face, height is negatively correlated with health in some metrics but is helpful so it makes sense. Face has no correlation and it's usually a rather feminine looking guy Rich guys are getting older women unless they want to pay for younger ones which would strike at their ego so likely not

To speak to the last parts of the video, I think we have a warped perception of history influenced by people heavily biased toward feminist ideology. We perceive women who have lived in non modern times as oppressed and such but maybe there was a utility to having women play out the roles the way they did in the past. Maybe just maybe these people were a bit more grounded in the dichotomy of relationships, just without knowing how to express it with scientific terms. But they structured their man-woman dichotomy based on ideas we are now starting to discover scientifically. Maybe they were on to something and maybe we’ll revert back to it; not out of emotion or ideology, but out of utility and the necessity for stability.
