I would say that a MR2 is the "poor man's Porsche" more then a M3. A M3 is a M3.

The 996 911 is the best 911 you can get for the budget, it’s not the air cooled Porsche’s everyone drools over, but in the bright side, it being the transition to water-cooled 911’s makes it the cheapest and the black sheep in the lineage, that and I love those fried egg headlights 😅

I looked for videos on an E36 M3 cuz I want a cheap fun car to drive in the summer. I have power and precision with my tuned Audis. After seeing this I think I made up my mind. Good video!

I have a e39 540i 6-speed and it’s good, but when I drove a e36 m3 a couple weeks ago I was blown away. The 540i is faster but the feel of the m3 was incredible, made me want to go buy one haha

The E36 M3 used to be a great value. I bought my E36 M3/4/5 many many years ago when no one wanted this car and it could be picked up at a steal. Today I still love this car, but I will say this. This car is not for the light of heart. It needs love, care patience and a little $. Mine runs like a top but over the years it has needed, window regulators, gaskets, seals, brakes, flushes and sensors. Parts are not crazy expensive but they are not cheap. I do 90% of my own repair, but when I did outsource the labor is crazy expensive for BMW techs. All in all, a great car, but you must be committed to this car to get the most value out of it.

I think we need to compare my R32 GTR (Gojirra) with my NA1 NSX (Mothra). Ive never driven either of those two cars but my heart is screaming Porche for the same reasons my JDM heart screams NSX. Pure, simple sexy and effective.

Man I just purchased my first e36 m3 and I love it Edit: just took it for a drive tday with my gf and blew a radiator hose it was pretty funny

this comparison makes more sense than you'd think if you weren't paying attention to the rivalry. they had a rivalry between them similar to that of the quattro and the stratos and are just as different from each other (maybe even a little less different from each other actually) but anyways you made some really good points. I think the bmw is the better bargain, you get one hell of a car and you can do a lot with it being N/A actually, very free high reving fun.. but i do think you pay for the prestigeous quirky stuff with the porsche and its worth it if money isnt an option.. i kind of like the underdogs in the car world so i like them beamer in this argument ... but id take a 996 over a lot of cars. the cool thing is though, if you can afford that porsche, you can afford the bmw as well

Having owned Both cars , and still owning the BMW m3 as it's by far the best all round car , the Porsche dose not drive like a sports car as the m3 is alive at your fingertips , the Porsche only looks good ,

Speaking of back seats in Porsche’s, my best friends dad had a 997 Turbo S back around 2014-2015 and he would let my friend drive it for the night every once in a while. That car actually does have back seats somehow and we would cram four and one time five decent sized 16-18 year olds in that car. Your head is bent forward and your legs are squished no matter what way you position lol. Fucking great times 👌🏼

The one i have might only be a 316i, but i love it to bits. E36 or e34 M cars would be my dream car

the bmw is more inviting and easy to have fun in. you can drive it every day and still be comfortable. any Porsche i have driven always feels way more intense all the time in a lot of ways. they are very different cars.

Idc what people think about my car at all but I love how non car people look at my e36 in a sense that they’re confused what it is and why it makes sounds lol

To compare them more accurately you need to compare the Euro Spec E36 M3 to the 993. The US E36 is too watered down. Granted an S50B32 E36 isn't legal here yet, but when it will be in 2021 it'll be an amazing car to import imo. Being an M3 owner, i will however admit that the 911 is the better drivers car. But, if you can afford both i would recommend having one of each in your garage. I'm biased but my preference however would be to own an E46 M3, and a 997 Turbo or GT3.

But that m3 isn't really an m3... it's missing the engine... and the brakes The ITBs, the higher redline and the extra power...

The exhaust on that M3 sounds so nice.

I have both. 97 993 C2 and 99 M3 Estoril. For the money, the M3 wins hands down. I love the feel and sound of the e36 M3. The Porsche is great but the M3 was $15k and the Porsche was 5 times that price. Both great cars and I plan to keep them for a long time.

You put a e36 next to a 911 its a solid even i love em both i absolutely love german cars but if you put an e30 next to any porsche i am always going to choose the e30 it is such a beautiful build

The Porsche sounds throatier and more angry than the M3.

I do agree that the sound of the S55 engine in the new M models is a bit off, but any new BMW M car is just beyond incredible. They most certainly haven’t lost their way, but maybe a little in the sound department with the new turbo sixes. Awesome comparison video, David! :)

In the same respect the "rs tribute" being the same performance as the rs at a portion of the cost,the base e36 can easily be modded to the M3's performance. Do the cams and intake and a 325 and 328 is puttin out essential the same #'s as the m3...with a cheap insurance note

Ahhh yes.. Back when BMW were still undistilled driver's cars. Before the F30 got fat and heavy ( close to the size of an E39 5 Series! ) and had numb steering when they stopped using the hydraulic steering rack after the e90 generation. That's not nostalgia talking, those are the facts, and BMW has clearly jumped the shark. Don't get me started on the Beaver Tooth grills !! lol
