How did your handle scales hold up?
@The_Lorax0331
@The_Lorax0331 5 жыл бұрын
mwillblade surprisingly well. The metal edges have dents and scratches all around and there are a lot of scratches on the scales themselves but no breaks. Over time the toothpick and tweezers become loose and fell out but I bought replacements that fit snug. I take a 2000 grit sand paper with a drop of water to polish a lot of the little scuffs out. It’s got a lot of character. Will be sad when they finally get replaced.

After sharpening with the fine stone, i recomend a leather strap with green honingpaste... it makes a sharp blade even sharper and gives a fine polish too.

@@QuantumMechanic_88.9 Yes it works well to give a fine polish .. Being a wood machinist/Carpenter for 30 years ive used all sorts from the palm of my hand to leather ,wood and newspaper.. Iv also seen this on Carter cutlery , check his youtube channel. I use a pocket microscope with battery powered light , Really cool to see what is happening as you go through the different grit.

I've done it by hand, on a #400 diamond plate, it worked like a charm, 'took me less than 5min to get the right shape. I then resharped it to a razor edge! Man, it's so fun and practical to whittle with it!

Just a tip, you can wrap electrical tape around the jaws of the Lansky to give you a better grip on the knife. It also keeps the jaws from scratching your knife.

The best tool for the job is the one you have! I did a similar mod on my very first S.A.K. about 30 years ago. I didn't buy the knife, but found it, sluffed in my patrol car, so had nothing to lose. I carried it every day for 10 years till it was completely worn out. I fell in love with the knife because I found myself using it every day. I've carried one ever since! I bought the second two!

Felix is the Über-Wizard of SAK! Great mod for the small blade Felix, I think this would appeal to a lot of hobby carvers. I ended up doing something similar to the electrician's blade, but took the material from the back to make the tip more pointy and slender. I ended up gifting that one away, because it didn't have the other tools I wanted. I'm wishing I kept it now to try and take it apart and make a custom SAK with exactly the tools I want. If I didn't chicken out at the thought of potentially ruining several SAKs in the attempt to make "THE one".

Brilliant modification. I need a knife like this so will give it a go on my SAK Classic. Felix - Not sure if you have already done this or not, but maybe do a video on how to make the tool you used to hold the knife? Great idea

@@FelixImmler Hi Felix. On the video, at 2 mins 20 seconds, you are holding a clamp that you use to hold the blade so that you can file it at the right angle. Is this clamp something you made or bought? If you made it, I would love to see a video of how you made it. Hope that helps. Please keep up the great work and thank you again for your videos. P.S. Just bought a Swiss Champ so looking forward to seeing how many uses I can get out of it.

Hola Felix. If doing with a hand file do you think still necessary to cool it down? Or just using oil while grinding may keep the heat treatment? Gracias, saludos 🇲🇽

If you do it with a hand file you can just oil a little bit. That's enough.
