I am no expert in electronics, I remain a curious hobbyist. However, I have always been fascinated in learning how audio electronics works. Disassembling various radios as a kid and eventually becoming interested in designing and building guitar effects pedals. I attempt to understand how these systems operate electronically, and due to this approach, I have picked up a few bits of theory along the way. If you're unsure about it, my best advice is just get started, mistakes and corrections (and the occasionally popped component) is how we learn. You win or you learn

I'm just getting into pedal building, and I have to say you have THE best videos on it that I've found thus far. The in-depth of the parts and how they actually effect the sound wave as well as showing the math to go along with a lot of it as well as explaining your schematics extremely well has really helped with me grasping the circuitry!

Thank you so much for these videos You're a natural teacher and give some exceptional explanations for a complete beginner like me Watching a lot of other content, I come away with a list of things to try and copy, but I don't understand them With your videos, I come away understanding why these circuits are designed the way they are and that is infinitely more empowering. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge and expertise

I am not an expert in electronics either, but shouldn't you have a current limiting resistor on the output diodes? BTW your input voltage divider solved a problem I had on another project, thanks!

Glad the voltage divider helped, Jim. You are absolutely right about a resistor, a 1K between the 100nF capacitor and the diodes would be best practice for a number of reasons, which include protecting the OpAmp. Your excellent comment led me to measure the maximum current through the output diodes and it reached about 3.5mA peak without the 1K resistor and 2.5mA peak after (with the 220k and 10k resistor setting the gain). A Ge should be able to handle around 50mA and a Si about 200mA. So, the didoes themselves should be okay in the experimental setup here. The resistor would also change the clipping characteristics of the diodes very slightly, so it is definitely one to experiment with. The MXR Disotrtion+ uses 10K with 1n34a point contact Germanium diodes, the ProCo Rat 1K and 1n914 Silicon Didoes.

Hi, I built this circuit and it works fine. Then I added a DPDT switch to switch between boost signal and true signal. During switching it makes a loud sound for an instant. I think it's resulting due to the signal bouncing in the switch. Is there any solution for that? Pls let me know.

That might be a switch pop. There’s a brilliant article about it here. www.muzique.com/lab/pop.htm I’d try the pull-down resistors first.

Oh man, tell me, how dumb am i? I bought silicon diodes instead of germanium. I guess this circuit won't work, right?

The 1n914 (and indeed the 1n4148) I use prior to the Germaniums are (small signal) silicon. The forward voltage is 600mV-ish on those, same as your 1n4007s, so they should work. I'm always buying diodes of all shapes and sizes as they all sound different in clipping circuits.

I do recommend getting some vintage, point-contact germaniums though, they sound ace in clipping circuits.
