One of my favorite diode recipes for most stompboxes is a Yellow+1n4001 in one direction, a single green LED in the other. The forward voltage is approx. 2.8-3V each side, so the waveform will be pretty uniform on both the positive and negative side of the wave, but it's still asymmetrical.

Thanx, but can you please tell us the direction of diodes in assimetrical clipping... Example, where to direct the positive side of diodes in series, to ground or to hot point of the pcb? I am asking bc i'm trying to mod boss ds1, and there are 2 diodes d4 and d5 one goes to ground and another goes to plus point of the pcb, so that info wold help a lot, and save some time. Ok thanx

An ancient video, but I've been through this my share of times. Germanium sounded the best in my high gain, soft clipper pedal I've relied on for 15 years, but oddly enough, I did soon discover I like the sound of Shottkys the best. They give the texture of soft tube clipping with the zing, fizz and buzz we never expect out of semiconductors even from the best modelers, but once I got that far, I had to work on refining it all around with so much of the bandwidth unusable and am back to it today, 9 years later! lol

Nice idea to try unmatched diodes. The lower forward voltage of germanium would start clipping at a much lower volume (signal voltage) than a silicon or an led so only the top or the bottom of the signal waveform would get clipped into a square waveform and you'd get a mix of clipped and unclipped sound until the volume (voltage) levels rise to activate both diodes and the whole signal is hard clipped. A capacitor would round off the hard edges of the resulting square wave so for a softer, subtle clipping like you'd need for a Klon the cap values are as important as the choice of diode. They'd act like power supply filter caps softening the harsh buzzsaw ripple coming from the rectifier diode/s.

I reverse engineered an MXR Distortion + in electronics school, and built it, later when I came across one of the old IBANEZ OD9 circuit schems the only difference were the clipper diodes. One was silicone, the other germanium. Of course stomp box distortion sucks compared to driving a tube amp. (When I played out) I used it for the preamp gain for leads and metal. If you'll indulge my soap box; the problem with stomp boxes drive is like any drug, it limits your experience and who wants to be happy all the time... not me, then what would you have to compare?

By changing one of the 3 diodes to achieve different clipping sounds..how does that effect the voltages’ that come after the LED SILICON & no diodes with the different values from each part…and how do you determine the voltage the next component can have without putting a strain on the already figured out path…I’m not sure I even know what I’m talking about…so be kind ….I would also like to see a whole schematic of the gain circuit..to better understand how to visualize signal paths..and that stuff .. +Matt Christensen lol. you're joking, but different colored LED actually do have different clipping points and it changes the tone slightly. Just like 1N4001 and 1N4148 are both silicon diodes, they have slightly different clipping points, and therefore, there is a slight tonal difference. Different colored LED's are very much the same. The forward voltage on diodes is different between the colors and brightnesses. Ranging anywhere from 1.5V (standard red type LED) all the way up to 4.5V (high intensity blue). The bigger the forward voltage the more clipping you get.

Blue LEDs take about 60% higher voltage to peak. It would just provide Les breakup. Would be more suited in an asym clipping setup. Especially on bass(imo) Could keep one side more rounded and give it a bit more punch at higher gain levels.

Clipping the signal, I think the best test is to choose the configuration with the ear. So everyone gets what they like best.

A fellow fan of the yellows. Funnily enough I didn't think these ones sounded as good as the reds he used, but I've got a small bag of yellows at home that I'm hoarding like the ark of the covenant because they're the smoothest sounding leds I've heard and they outdo any other colour I have. I guess its going to vary from led to led even within the same colour. Hoard yer A1 yellow leds like a mother, lest the led gnomes be on the prowl with the intentions of initiating master plan stage 1: acquire & collect leds. Yellows be under appreciated but if you've got good ones they're smooth as hell. I consider them a well kept secret because hardly anyone talks about yellows. I've got some blues that sound A1 too.

arent all LEDs the same, surely the colour is determined by the outer plastic.
@jeremywinnett6352

Simple answer: No. Different colors of LEDs require a different amount of voltage to turn "on". That point is the peak limit that causes the signal to clip. It's not a white led in a red plastic case. White LEDs do exist but they are typically a 3 emitter diode(RGB) or a blue diode surrounded by other materials to change the wavelength. Each color is made of a slight varied semiconductor material as well. So, no they don't but they kind of do, but only *before* the signal is clipped. In an overdrive circuit, there will be less difference than a cranked up distortion. A red led with gain at 8 may sound like a yellow led with the gain at 9, if that makes sense... It's no different than other diodes. They all do the same thing(for our intents). Just at different voltage levels.

Newer LEDs are likely the same - they are all UV with a visible colored phosphor. Older LEDs used a different crystal formulation for each color, and they all had different forward voltages.
