Modifying a Polaroid 600 Battery to Fit a Spectra Cartridge

By popular demand, here's how I used to modify Polaroid 600 batteries to fit inside of a Spectra cartridge if re-using it for other film. Also useful if you're shooting final batch spectra film and just want the "better" 600 battery to avoid jams (I don't know if this actually helps).

Two days ago I got the first Spectra model from 1986 and I found a way to prevent the jamming problem completely by accident. I put the spring from the 600 cartridge upside down and ran about 4 or 5 packs of film through it and it didn't even jam once. I was lucky that my camera came with an old genuine Polaroid Spectra film cartridge but the battery in it was dead so I put the one from the 600 pack. After that I found out the spring was upside down and when I put it in the correct way, I had the camera jam by ejecting 2 frames at the same time on my first pack.

Makes you wonder why Impossible didn't try solving the spring tension issue. I believe they're abit too strong to hold the wider Spectra films.

@@sonyviva308 they could fix it simply, but they didn't because it could cost them some money and spectra format is actually not favorite one in comparison with square format. they rather focused on polaroid go invention. because from that they could earn more money... but if they would start sell spectra film again, i'll definitely buy 10 packs at once.

@@radimproks589 They will not sell Spectra film again because they cannibalized the machinery for Spectra film and used it to make Go film. No idea what will happen to it if they ever discontinue Go film but hopefully it will be something resourceful

Thank you for this. Found one of these cameras at a Goodwill for $2 and figured what the heck... only to find out the films were discontinued in 2019. But did the modification you recommended and works great. Just need to find some spare old Spectra (used) cartridges in good condition and some i-type film but was able to get it to properly eject the expired film that was in the camera. After reviewing your video a few times I did realize that you pulled off the paper sheet from the original tray (as I suspect this may have caused some films to get stuck since they are thicker -- but once I removed this the camrea now feeds properly, with the original [but bad film pack] it had in it. I'm just curious to see how well the photos will come out with i-type or 600 type film.

I have a question and given the time of the video I can only hope. My question is if I can modify a 600 cartridge and put a fine rechargeable battery as small as possible but I need to know the exact voltage and amperage and also if the idea is viable Thanks!

Hello, I just found out I could do this and I have a few questions about the process. How would you compare the performance and reliability of using the foam and 600 spring frame vs just putting the pictures into a spectra cartridge? (like you did in an older video) Also, do I need a new era spectra cartridge to open it without breaking (impossible Polaroid originals), or do the old 90s spectra packs have the latches to open up the cartridges as well? Last thing I wanted to ask, you did a video using instax square film in a spectra, id love to see if you could attempt a wide or even 2 minis side by side for a cool split image effect. If you know anything about using instax square in a regular 600 id love to learn about that as well. Thanks 😊

I feel like the foam does really help. Especially to reduce multiple frames ejecting at the same time. I am unsure about the old spectra cartridges, I’ve only ever used the modern ones. 2 minis on one shot sounds interesting! I’m no longer messing with Spectras though, at least not this year.

Hey, quick question, do you think it’d be possible to design and 3d print a new front end for the spectra that allows you to shoot 600 film without this whole process? I’d like to know your thoughts on the viability and any concerns you’d have if so? Thank you!
@sprkplg
@sprkplg Жыл бұрын
The challenge isn’t the front end, so that would probably be a difficult and lengthy process. Look up Spectra adapter by polastudio, they have an attachment that allows you to feed a 600 cartridge directly.

I did this exactly but my spectra kept getting jammed when the 600 film is coming out. Can you think of a solution?
@sprkplg
@sprkplg 2 жыл бұрын
Could you tell if it was because a 2nd frame tried to slide in? This is why I stopped loading a couple at a time and instead went for trying to feed the whole stack.

@@radnebula6107 hi there. i actually had same experience. my 600 film in spectra didn't eject or if did, it took 2 frames. it was insane. i found out that a little hole (or space) in front of original (impossible project) spectra cartridge where film ejects was too open. there was more space than initiated so 2 frames went out. mine ones got out properly, but you don't want that of course. i took a higher plastic plate and replaced the original one. and it works! 8 frames going out nicely!
