I love being a Scouter, hiking, and prepping for the "what if" scenarios. Everything you carry should be tool with multiple uses. Built from a 1940's Boy Scout Patrol Stave design, my personal mods make it a true 21st century survivor tool.
Also watch • Awesome OLD SCHOOL BOY... for the base model walking staff.

I believe in an earlier video you used a table saw to cut a slot in the staff to store fish hooks and bandaids. I would be concerned that has compromised the staff. I appreciate having a staff. I use one. And all the power to you making it yours.
@HelicoolsHelipad

After you wind the 550 cord around that handle area where the cut was made, it increases the strength once more. It feels very solid in the hand. Remember, that step is optional. Some will say it is too dangerous, while others have still other reasons. It's what I wanted to do, and knew I could do it safely. Have I ever used that storage area? Not yet, but I know where it is if I had to. :-D

Oh boy... personalize it, functionalize it, and then test the heck out of it. I love my staff... I really need to make a video of me fishing with it, all the other things I can do. My latest add was an in-line skate wheel. Just unscrew the hook and store it right there. The wheels have bearings, and are great for making bow-drill fires.
@gregsmith9862

Interesting ideas, but for me, it’s too much & I’d simplify it by: I’d epoxy in the compass, get a smaller Ferrell rod to add to the inner slot, along with the fishing line & seal the slot with duct tape instead of clear tape. I’d also burn the one inch markings instead of using tacks. I wouldn’t want to fall & have the knife cut thru the inner tube, plus I think the eyelets would make it harder to slide your hand to the top in an emergency, so I’d leave those off.
@HelicoolsHelipad
@HelicoolsHelipad Жыл бұрын
Indeed... this was just to give ideas of what you "could" do. The tacks do come in handy for emergence nails and add punch in defense of your life from wild animals. I have since added an in-line skate wheel that is held down by the hook at the end. It works as a hold-down block for bow-drill fires.

Challenge them to build one then compare. Great ideas should be a two-way street; shared both ways. Cheers, and God bless.

I have been looking to buy that cold steel spear but I haven't heard of anyone who has it. I go camping in the New Mexico mountains and the last time I was there, I got out of my hammock one night to piss and when I used my high power flashlight to just look around I saw a pair of cougar eyes starring back at me from about 30-50yrds. I had a hand cannon on me but I still didn't sleep to well the rest of the night. 😐

Jackson D. Hardcastle why? You just sound thirsty, for attention, for recognition of just how altruistic you are. Here’s the truth. When you send someone a gift, unbidden, to someone you don’t know or have never met it can frankly be a little creepy, even a little stalker-like, also, maybe, just maybe, they plain forgot your details to credit you? Or tried out the item and decided it wasn’t worth recommending or mentioning? Re read your original comment, you come across like a high school boy who sent a girl chocolates and she didn’t stand up in class and thank you in front of her schoolmates.

I’m new to walking sticks. What is a stave? What are the tacks for? Good vid. Thx
@HelicoolsHelipad
@HelicoolsHelipad 3 жыл бұрын
A "stave" is an old school term for staff or walking stick. The word "stave" appears on the 1940's? designed walking stick in a Boy's Life magazine. The tacks serve multiple purposes. They are arranged in increments of 1', 6", and 1". You can test the depth of a steam (for instance) before trudging in and finding yourself over you head. You can measure the size of fish that you catch to ensure it meets the legal standard. They can also be removed from the staff and used as an emergency nail. Furthermore, they give the staff a weapon-like feature to ward off vicious coyotes and such. Lastly, they are decorative. Great questions... thanks! Come back any time my friend.

Unfortunately, when I went back to find the light, it was no longer available, but fret not... Walmart sells a tiny LED bicycle handle bar and seat post light kit that is perfect. Red for tactical, and white for all other times. They fit the staff perfectly, as it is the same size as a handlebar. You can find them in the bicycle isle at Walmart, or other stores that sell bikes for kids.

I noticed that it's already splitting at the top. A staff is supposed to be kind of a simple tool starting to look like it was designed by a committee.
@HelicoolsHelipad
@HelicoolsHelipad 5 жыл бұрын
The ideas presented are designed to spark imagination in others, and not everyone will agree on what they prefer on their staff... some like a minimalist staff, while others want a Swiss Army knife. The great thing is, it is totally up to you and your preferences on what you add onto your staff. If a split occurs, no biggie... Gorilla wood glue to the rescue, and it is stronger than the original. Good luck on your project and thank you for adding to the content of the story. Best wishes.

Nothing to be gained by hanging a bunch of gear on a walking staff. It adds weight, makes it cumbersome and easy to snag on things. Everything can go in/on/around a pack, pouch, belt, pocket, or your neck. Seems like their is a competition among You Tube preppers to see who can make the "coolest" staff that is more about form than function.
@HelicoolsHelipad
@HelicoolsHelipad 5 жыл бұрын
I agree. I have a go-bag with lots of cool stuff in it... 90% of which I would only need if stranded for more than a few days. The staff that I built was to my liking... some people like a minimalist staff, and that is okay. Some people like a stand-alone "Swiss Army knife" staff, which is what I built. My point is, I gave you enough ideas to spark your imagination... build it your way that works best for you and your situation. As for me, I took mine on a 50 mile hike this last summer, and although it was weighty, I had no problem whatsoever with it. It was not cumbersome, nor snagging. I can't speak for any other KZfaq creators of videos, as I have never watched any that build staves. What I can say is, my staff is "trail rated" ...and it did just fine for 54.4 miles over 5 days last summer. Since then, I've taken it on several smaller adventures. I hope you have as much fun and success building yours as I have building mine. Many blessings!

I agree, just have all your gear in a backpack which is always on your back. I don't have a dedicated walking stick (staff) but every time I go hiking I just find a suitable stick and just use it for the day. Where I am in Australia (south) there is no shortage of sticks laying on the ground. Cheers

I think it's a personal choice! There's a lot of people who won't use a walking stick. Are they wrong because you chose to. If you want a utility type of stick with items attached or one nicely carved, a plain one or none at all it's entirely up to the individual! After all they are the one that is carrying it on not carrying it what ever the case maybe! So people don't get your panties in a wad for something that does concern you!

What I have on my staff is what I like, and I mostly added things to give people ideas of what they might like. Some people enjoy a minimalistic approach and are happy with a stick they find in the woods. Thank God we are all not alike, because imagine how boring the world would be.

It would actually be better to hide rather than feature important tools and implements bc it will become difficult to hang on to things when SHTF, unless you are willing to fight to the death with all sorts people for your stuff, when things get bad. So it’s better your stuff looks old and unusable.
@HelicoolsHelipad

You have a good point. If S really did HTF, the most dangerous animals to be around are people. It is best to form a group of trusted like-minded adventurers prior to anything happening... but if you are caught in an emergency situation, at least your walking stick can become much, much more, and help you survive. It is easy enough to strip the pole and conceal it, though.
