After a short break in making videos, I am back. In this video I will give a short update on what happened and then show the new hiking staff that I made. Hope you enjoy it.....

I found your video because I am in the process of making my own staff and wanted some extra ideas, awesome! A few things I am doing to mine that you didn't mention are to have a hook attachment, notches for measuring how deep water is and a y shaped attachment that can be used as a crutch or rifle test. Thanks for the ideas.

Good ideas, Darby. I have pretty well abandoned trekking poles in favor of a walking staff. it makes sense to adapt a staff for as many multiple uses as you can conjure. A hook attachment would be handy for pulling down dead limbs for dry firewood, retrieving stuff from water and so forth. Something to aid breaking dead limbs from trees is especially handy around campgrounds where campers have picked the ground clean of firewood.

I use a spiral wrap to make a great grip on the walking staffs and sticks that I make. It starts with a clove hitch and is a series of half hitches to make the grip pattern and it looks really sweet. Nice staff that you built, I like the attachment option, I thought about doing that a while back but instead I started by building one with a ferro-rod in the top capped by a dresser drawer handle to use as a tarp pole.

Nice! I need to invest more time in learning different wraps..... Thanks for watching/commenting!

Nice update Darby. Great description on your staff. I plan to make similar attachments to my group staff gift. Excellent ideas. Feral Hogs and Mountain Lions are increasing in our area too. I just checked the swamp being our house a few minutes ago and saw hundreds of hog routing areas. Other people have told me that Mountain lions are nearby, but I haven't seen them. Mountain Lions are documented in the Sam Houston National Forest, about 40 miles northwest. ATB. Ken

Sorry to hear about your computer crash and loss of all your stuff. I like your new intro though...your old one was very cool but the new one is really well thought out and well done. Sometimes having to start over is just what we need. Your hiking staff is awesome! I can tell you put a lot of time and effort into it and the results are fantastic...very simple design yet very effective and should serve your purposes well. I have a staff that my dad made for me, I never actually hike with it because I find it way too heavy and I have just never used a staff or trekking poles or anything but as I get older I may have to consider making one of these myself. Great video, my friend, and glad to see you getting back into the KZfaq action.
@RiverBendSurvival8 жыл бұрын
+Smell N Roses Thanks brother! One good thing about the computer crash was that it gave me time to think about how I wanted to do things when I "relaunched".....lol. I used a walking stick for many years, but it got old and was close to breaking. So I had to retire it. Then I bought the new mechanical walking poles. They are nice.....but not a "stick" and you know what I mean. So it was important for me to design and make my own. It is just a little heavier than I wanted, but it is just a matter of me getting used to it. Thanks for the comment!
@SmellNRoses8 жыл бұрын
RiverBendSurvival My only thought though was that you should have an additional camera mount somewhere along the side of the staff like with a hose clamp or something, so you can have the camera attached AND still be able to use the tip for your spear point. Can you imagine how awesome the footage would be if you could record video while fighting off a puma or a wild hog? LOL! Probably be the last thing on your mind in that situation, but if you are looking for some "viral" video, that would be it haha!

As a thought, drill and tap top of the staff for a broad head. Cover with PVC pipe/top to protect one's self. Peracord to camo the PVC. Sand down the staff for quick removal. A few pokes will generally slow down most aggregation.

Nice ideas on the staff, I have hiked with a staff for almost 45 years mostly because I tend to carry a heavy pack,and some trails/water crossings can be difficult.Also add many thongs through upper area of shaft and hang things/some even useful items. Dressing leather thongs with small personal keepsakes just for fun,,similarly like beads and trinkets. If in bear country could add a few jingle bells . Also add a heavy pointed stud on the tip to help reduce wear from the trail dirt and rocks. ...just needed to comment because I have always felt the extra support was a big help..Stay safe and God Bless...

Yes I've been treed by a bull before.. It was one of those hold my beer I can think I can do it moments. Yeah it didn't work out so good lol anyway. I like the new mod you did to your staff. I think it's ingenious in fact... Have you tried to hold it in a tree and see if it'll stick in yet? I bet it will. I know it's going to come in great for hunting and of course tightening that occasional screw that comes loose. Sorry couldn't resist. Thanks for sharing with us brother.
@RiverBendSurvival8 жыл бұрын
+Bob808Knight Thanks Bob! Yes, I can use it from a tree......lol. And all kidding aside, using that tip as a flat blade screw driver is genius! Once I get the frog gig and the fishing spear tips done I will see about doing another video on "water use"......

Good video. I have never used a walking stick but at my advancing age I need one. How heavy is it. I was thinking of one made of aluminum tubing like the one made for Ken.
@RiverBendSurvival8 жыл бұрын
+james green Mine is fairly heavy out of necessity. Ken's is really light but still strong. When we made Ken's there was a very specific main use for it and everything else was based around it. The same thing with mine, I want/need a "weapon" based system..... Thanks for watching!

I had a couple of run ins with wildlife when I was a young teen. Since then, I don't go anywhere without a gun. I'm not getting treed, and if I get into a fight, it's going to be a gunfight, and any wildlife better come armed appropriately. I do carry a walking stick because I have a bad knee, but I'm too old to climb trees, there may not be a tree close, and you may have two or three seconds, at most, reaction time before a cougar is on top of you. And that's if you know cougars, and constantly watch your back trail. Anyone who suggests you fight a cougar with a stick is not your friend. Where I live, as in most places, hogs are an enemy, and the DRN says shoot them every chance you get.
@RiverBendSurvival8 жыл бұрын
Thanks James. Now as a retired SOCOM Operator I can assure you that in "2-3 seconds" the guy with the staff in his hand wins 100% of the time over a guy with a gun in a holster.... As I said in the video, I don't want to fight anything with a staff. But, a "spear" has saved millions of lives through history. I would rather have it than not. But like you, I have knee problems and must use a stick/staff. I seldom go ANYWHERE without a firearm. Here in Texas hogs are "enemy #1" and are open season year-round too.

I don't know what type of "Compass" you use but my compass will fit on to my Walking Staff, it sorta like yours is made similar anyway. My bolt is the same size as yours.
@RiverBendSurvival7 жыл бұрын
Nice! I have seen a lot of walking staffs with a compass mounted to them. It's a great idea, I carry a number of different ones (depending on my mood....lol) but it is always in my pocket or bag. Thanks for watching!

Interesting SUV approach to a walking staff. In my own experience, using it for its intended use, An aid to walking , Is far more important than tricking it out for eventualities. Your gait with the staff when walking is awkward, not smooth and rhythmic . A wrist strap is all you need on the shaft. A rubber foot is nice to reduce the noise and the jarring when you bring it down, hardware stores sell them in 4’s for chair legs. Cut the top end at a 45 and smooth it out for a good support going down steep hills. No metal, no whipping, all gets too far away from its real use. My thoughts...with respect.

make one a hook so you can pull down something. have something on the other end so it wont slip on rocks or ice and less damage to the bottom of your staff
@RiverBendSurvival8 жыл бұрын
+Fermin Garcia The hook is a great idea. I live in the tropics (minutes from Mexico in the very southern tip of Texas) we don't know what ice is, unless it is in our drinks.......lol. We don't have rocks here either, I would need to go a couple of hours (6 or so) north to find those.Thanks for watching!

Have your walking stick with a very sharp land point. Then like Masai and lion attacks. They plant the blunt end into the ground, kneel, full body weight on the "spear" and then point the sharpened spear point at the attacking animal's throat, chest cavity. The rushing animal will impale itself. Otherwise, you get to stab the animal, and give it a teachable moment. Same for getting treed by a cougar, mountain lion, puma, javelina, or the (German-Russian) Hog-zilla boars, and you can stab them in the neck, back, and rump.
@johnlord83378 жыл бұрын
+John Lord If you could make that bolt a 3-4 3/8" tine array, then you have a fish spear, but an animal getting 3-4 easier smaller entry and super sharp tiny tines will go in all the way, to make a near-fatal kill of the animal.
@RiverBendSurvival8 жыл бұрын
+John Lord I thought about doing that, the issue is that it is "frowned upon" by nature lovers due to the "impact" they say that it has on the land/trails. The honest threat of a cougar attack down here is getting greater, but it is still so minor that it does not concern me at all. Having said that, I would rather have a chance to use a staff than not if it did happen. As for hog, I can get in a tree pretty fast when they are after me....lol. Once there I now have the advantage. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@RiverBendSurvival8 жыл бұрын
+John Lord Already in the process of making both a frog gig and a fish spear.....
