Excellent explanation of the difference between real and feel as it pertains to the Moe Norman swing. I have bought-in to this method…almost. I say almost because the lower body movement just doesn’t work for me in the exact way the Moe and Todd describe. Sometimes my timing is spot on and contact is sweet. But, other time I “lunge” at the ball and the results are disastrous. And, I have no way of predicting when this is going to happen. The MB fundamental that is absolutely fundamental for me is the hands high and non-rotational right hand that extends down the target line. I purchased the tapes from Todd sells and I have studied them closely, but I have to keep my weight slightly forward and straighten my left leg before impact to avoid the dreaded “lunge”. It works for me and that’s all that matters. Thanks for making these videos. It helps.

I've been watching Moe's and Todd's videos on the the single plane swing .I have also watched your version of it. I tried to emulate Moes style . Didn't work out so well. However I made it fit my body style. I point the club straight at the ball . Then I start a slow deliberate take away bend the wrist so the club is pointing straight in the air at the height of my swing I let gravity take over from there.

Totally agree, Chad. No matter what the numbers say, feeling is everything. While I’m still a JVGA disciple, I started looking at Moe’s swing about a month ago and I’ve dabbled a bit here and there with it on the range. My results were nothing really spectacular and I figured I needed to get a bit “technical” with it in order to make it work for me. Fast forward to this past Monday and I’m at the end of my round on 18. 420 yd Par 4. Tee shot is a bit left just off the fairway. Then I fat my second shot right into a fairway bunker with about 165 left to the flag. I’m decent out of green-side bunkers but fairway bunkers give me fits. On a whim, Moe’s swing came to mind and I figured “why not?” Grabbed a 7i and let it rip. I didn’t THINK too much about the mechanics or anything - I just visualized watching Moe swinging and tried to replicate. The swing FELT good, the contact FELT good and most importantly, the swing didn’t hurt my back! Pitch mark was 2 feet from the hole and rolled another 5. Making par on that hole, for me - incredible! So I understand what you mean by “feeling the shot.” JV’s swing leaves me pain free so that’s why I stick with it, but I’m seriously considering Norman’s swing - and will be using it more on the next round! Great videos, man! LOVE the channel!!! Thank you!!!

Thanks so much Brian and I totally appreciate the story. If there's one thing all this has taught me, across all the swing reviews, it's that getting too bogged down in mechanics and making yourself a textbook version of the swing model is just a killer. Ultimately, see the shot you want and keep trying to get out of your body's own way of figuring out how to make that shot happen. Your subconscious is so good at figuring it out for you.

Its awesome that you've had this realization. I love what Todd does with clarifying the difference between "feel" and "real". And in truth they are often not the same, particularly in golf. But that's where are brain gets tricky to a degree. If we try too hard to do the "real" that where you get into over rotation and the sequence gets off. Your brain quantitfies the real as a certain "feel". That's how you know physically if you've done it right. There will always be feel in golf. This particular point of the master move was a big thing for me. When i feel this I'm solid. When i try to achieve the real i over rotate. While Moe exaggerated it when explaining, the point of the feeling is solid and necessary. Keep up the good work. Really enjoying this content as we follow your journey. All the best!

Love your videos. I switched from exactly copying Moe's swing via Graves to Kirk Junge's setup for impact method and improved my distance and accuracy dramatically. The main tip I would give you is to NEVER try keeping your trailing foot on the ground through impact like they teach. Keep letting yours come up naturally into and through impact!! Swing looks good as it is.

@@GolfTestDummy With the heel down I lost about 25 yards of distance, and also could not get my hands leading the clubhead enough through impact. I also had backpain that disappeared after letting the heel come up as it naturally would in any other sport. After quitting this aspect of the heel down as taught by Graves I immediately improved both distance and accuracy thanks to Kirk's Setup for Impact swing.

@lawbinson
@lawbinson 2 жыл бұрын
I think it comes down to how the body is able to deliver shaft lean at impact. With the Junge / more conventional method with more hip rotation, the trail elbow can be behind the trail hip and the turn will deliver shaft lean. The trail arm is in a skipping the rock whipping motion. The interesting thing with the Graves / Moe / Trail Foot Down method, there is less hip rotation, so you need to get your trail elbow ahead of your trail hip at delivery in order to deliver shaft lean at impact. If your trail arm is skipping the rock in a whipping motion, it will lead to early release. It's actually more of a punching down the line type of feel that's required to preserve your wrist angles naturally for the desired shaft lean.

Great vids DUMMY. I played this way back on the early 90's at a very high level, of course I was much younger and I could perform the moves better then than now. To me the secret to Moes ability to hit consistent shots was his finding of what we call now angular momentum. When performed at a pro level it is dead for accuracy. Moe knew what Moe knew and his describing the feelings he had were exaggerated but that's what one has to do to get the actual Moe motion down. Or let me say, no one gets his movements down they just get close. No one ever did it like Moe and no one will ever master his motion because it's his DNA and not yours. Thanks for another insight to one of the best ball striking players of the game.

Chad, I just started tinkering with Moe’s swing recently, so I’m so glad I stumbled across your channel. It’s so helpful to learn along with someone else going through it. This swing feels like cheating when it’s locked in lol. My main hang up is set up…are you setting up with the club face in a normal position to the ball or more towards the heel? Todd Graves talks about lining up the heel. I’m still trying to iron that part out as I think that may be partly why I lose the swing at times. Anyway, love what you’re doing…extremely helpful!
@GolfTestDummy
@GolfTestDummy 2 жыл бұрын
Wow, such a great question, because it trips a whole bunch of talking point dominoes. There's a few things I'd say. First, when I look at Moe in his setup, he's balanced, but as far as he stands from the ball, I would guess there is a tendency to get out on his toes a bit during his swing. Couple that with the fact that he's going down to get to the ball, and I bet that if he set up with the sweet spot aligned, by the time he made impact, he'd get weak shots off the toe. So my instinct is that he preset at address on the heel to prepare for that. Another thing is, your eyes can play tricks on you, so you have to be careful. If you are standing more over the ball, the position of clubhead and ball look one way, but move further back to where you're not standing over the ball, and that same club ball relationship will look completely different, because your viewpoint has changed. Kinda like when you're driving a car, and your mind imagines where your tires are. If you were to get in the passenger seat, you may feel like you're in a totally different place on the road. At the end of all this, Moe said something that sounded completely strange, but if you consider the way he was, then what he said makes total sense. He said, nobody should try his swing, or swing as he does. That they'd never hit the ball and it would be disaster. Most people probably think he's dead wrong, and that single plane is a great way to swing. But I don't think he was talking about single plane is a bad idea. I think he meant MOE'S swing, the one he had, was not a good idea. Because it was his. Unique only to him. And that everyone is different. Like fingerprints. Using his ideas and technique is fine, but at the end of it all, it has to be YOUR swing. Not his. So, the best advice I could give would be, forget the "textbook". Play around until you find the ball position that gives you the results you want, and then who cares if it matches what some expert says. Thats exactly how Moe came to be the best. By only doing what worked, and not necessarily what was "right".

@@GolfTestDummy Thanks a bunch for the insight, brother. I also think you’re spot on with the “feel” of driving forward. I recently tried that with my conventional swing….driving hard downward and toward the target to initiate the backswing and this generated a lot of compression and power. Glad to see you are having results with this method. Nice job on that scorecard! Question for you. How tall are you? And do you have big hands? What kind of grips are you using and what size are they? I am 6'2" and have very large hands. Right now I am using a standard sized golf pride grips on my irons. Recently I just had GolfPride MCC +4 jumbo grips put on my wedges and wow do they make a huge difference especially for a single plane swing. After hitting balls with my wedges and the jumbo golf pride grips, I can not go back to my standard size grips on my irons they are way too small. I will be converting my irons and woods to the same grips as well. I would highly recommend larger grips based on how big your hands are. Maybe a golf pride midsize grip and something that has +4 on it. That +4 just means the grip where the lower hand goes is larger as well and not tapered as much. If you are unsure, you could just take an old iron, and regrip one club with a larger grip to see how you like it. But a larger grip and the single plane swing go together like bread and butter. Give it a try and report back in the next video! Todd Graves has a good video explaining this called "Single Plane, Natural Golf, Moe Norman - Grip Size Matters" give it watch if you haven't already. Dude, so much better from what I can tell! Quite positive of it actually . Great work. Many things are so much better. So you might have progressed already from the point of the video but based on this video here are some SLIGHT tweaks because you are getting really close. You are crossing the line just a bit from what I can see and this is because at the end of your backswing you have more motion than Moe does. He gets quite quiet with his legs and hips near the top because this really is a DOWNSWING BASED swing. A bit like Venetos' swing in a sense. It's more like just residual arm motion from the momentum of the backswing (with some absorption and counter force in the legs) that constitutes the majority of the top of his swing. Moe's power came from acceleration on the downswing and almost a quick stopping and recoil in the arms and torso from the top. So you have just a bit a extra hip rotation and hip tilt near the top that produces that slight crossing of the line at the top ( but it's much better). I believe that changing that will allow you to get a bitter tighter with rotation on the way down and drive the shaft angle even more into the ball. Thanks for that! Oftentimes, when I'm going through these in depth reviews, a big factor is in how different the previous method and current method are. Opening of the hips on the backswing was a piece of bedrock in Shawn Clement's method. And now? Haha, I need to prevent the hips from turning too much. So I'm literally going from one extreme to another. It adds a whole other wrinkle of difficulty in making the changes.

@@GolfTestDummy Yeah, no kidding. The swing is endlessly complicated when viewed as a whole. I've been working on understanding Cameron Champ's swing for quite a while. It's an amazing engineering marvel in terms of power production but it's also amazing how many subtleties there are in the fine tuning. The more you want to pull out of a swing in terms of performance, the tighter the tolerances and nuances get. It's like racing in some ways. Today, I was noticing that a slight change in neck inclination makes a huge difference in downswing rotation and path freedom with that swing. And I've been learning to some degree almost all the great swings (at least understanding the components) and there are so many variables that the average golfer (and maybe even teacher) wouldn't notice about the way renowned swings are put together. I could go on for hours; not kidding. Any way, I hear ya! That's for sure. By the way, I was noticing that the swing at 10:02 was closer to what I am talking about: more restricted lead hip with less tilt and I could see that you got deeper into the hit. Cheers.

In one video, Moe talks about pulling like mad with the left arm. In another, he says he's made a change, and his hands are out of the swing completely, making it more effortless. Moe was always cryptic and, contrary to what I've seen, over the years, he was making changes and Moe in the 50's is different than Moe in the 90's. Where I am personally right now, is turning my torso back and through, and the arms are along for the ride.

You have cracked it I think. Big difference (obviously on that GIR) but also in what the swing looks like. The long lazy loop at the top has gone and it all looks really tight. Like you said at the start and others have done as well - You get results very quick with this. I think with steady practice, just a few more rounds and you will shoot even or less. Especially if you can match Fairways in regulation to the Greens.
@GolfTestDummy

Thanks Alan. The funny thing is, I hit more fairways in the first round, haha. But, to be fair, the fairways at this course, in general, are pretty tight, and missing the fairway doesn't always mean it was a bad shot. GIR is a more important stat for me.

I like what Mike teaches, because it's all about developing hand skill, and Moe always brought up hand eye coordination being crucial. Mike's biggest feel versus real example is the tipping of the shaft out from the top, which is sort of in the same vein as Monte Scheinblum's no turn and cast drill. Might get to those one day.

Cool stuff, GTD. There's a lot of instructors pushing rotation and very little lateral ( GG Swing Tips?) because they say lateral slows speed. If I focus on rotation I just spin out. Also, Moe thought he swung straight down the target line after contact but Wayne DeFrancesco's video on Moe shows that was not the case. I'm trying everything like Jim Venetos' swing, Jess Frank stack and tilt, Chuck Quinton rotary swing and God knows what else and hitting 1500 balls a week but can't decide on a method. Saguto says USE the right hand, Rotary swing says right side causes all the problems. GG says in one video to a student "you have no hands" and Malaska says "Use your hands!" JChown made a video recently about "Never bump your hips!" so I'm in a perpetual state of confusion. This has to stop somewhere. Go watch CHI CHI RODRIGUEZ - he's not worried about this crap. There's a video of a match between Cheech and Doug Sanders from "Shell's Wonderful world of Golf' on KZfaq and he absolutely kills the ball in that match with ancient equipment. If you haven't seen it check it out - freaking wild! Keep up the good work!
@GolfTestDummy
@GolfTestDummy 2 жыл бұрын
I've watched all of that AND Chi Chi, lol. The confusion, in my opinion after all this.... stuff, is that there's a billion ways to get there and leave there, but impact, in regards to club and bal, MUST be a particular way. Period. It's all that matters and it's the only set of universal truths that exist. Handle must be leading to some degree, clubface must be square, and ball must be struck before the turf. Period. Thats it. Everything else before and after is up for grabs.

I agree that when I hit my best shots with this swing, I feel like I am leading with my left butt cheek starting straight to the target. Of course the left leg is forcing this to become a rotating move, but I feel like butt straight to the target and my hands are dropping to my right knee, but those are feels not reals. We play money matches Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Ye use out handicaps and play for low net score. Last weekend I shot net 67, 70, and 68 and took the money all three days. Sadly, once those scores post my handicap should reflect that and no more easy money, but hey, isn’t that what I’m working towards?

You should not really be moving laterally. As you start of the transition you are working off the inside of the trail foot which pushes the pelvis towards the lead knee. You then are rotating the torso and pelvis together in the downswing. While staying in your tilt you then can only rotate so much then right arm and skipping of the rock sensation takes over. The vertical drop happens naturally when pelvis goes to the lead knee not by dropping the arms. You can't go by what Moe says. Todd explains everything with feel vs real

You're right Kent. I've seen that video. That's why in this video I was saying that Todd is absolutely right in explaining what's actually happening. That's reality. I've seen this video. He is talking about Manuel de la Torre and taking the hands out of it, then he mentions his right elbow and trying to move it along his belly. You're de-lofting the club by about 8 degrees I bet, which is what you should be doing. It will get you that extra length and better compression. You're just doing it with a feeling instead of trying to figure out how to deloft it at impact. Feels are a great way to learn a motion.

I cant imagine anyone who has studied Moes swing harder than Todd Graves and he doesnt have his move.

I can understand that and I have to agree. Honestly, what I've discovered so far, is that there are quite a few people that believe they need to be an exact replica of Moe. First, it's impossible to be somebody else. Moe himself made that point. But even if you did a great impression, Moe had something that can't be copied or replicated or achieved. He had a gift. A true gift. And no one will ever be able to do exactly what he did, how he did it. I'm more realistic in my expectations and goals. I think the setup and some of the things that come with it can really improve my game, but ultimately, it still has to be MY swing, and I can't expect to get Moe's results.
