When you rethink your short backswing you will understand the Single Plane Genius of Moe Norman.
"I can make a straight lines out of a crooked game" - Moe Norman
This is the part 4 of a five-part series where I review my book "The Single Plane Golf Swing, Play Better Golf the Moe Norman Way". in this series I use common sense to uncover specific details of natural body movements of Moe Norman's swing to help you rethink your golf swing and, in the process, discover the easiest way to play golf.
In this video I revisit the importance of the address position as it relates to the backswing to help you understand that a shorter backswing can produce more speed because a short backswing isn't really short. I also explore lag, leverage and Moe's "vertical drop". I also help you discover how Moe, using his lower body, made straight lines out of a crooked game.

I keep going back to this video as I work to get the transition nailed down. I missed my tee time today, so I spent two hours at the range working on my single plane swing. It's starting to "click" more consistently resulting in great impact on my clubs. I would love to attend one of your schools when the Canada-US border opens up.

I loved the disconnect of the lower body and the upper body in the back swing to transition, and as Moe Norman said "I go down as I'm going back" which drops the club on the inside. Game changer for me in that crucial sequencing moment. I feel like there is hardly any manipulation and more centrifugal force activating the swing plane. Cheers Todd, best video yet!!

The expert coaching I get regularly is changing my entire golfing experience to a much more fun game. Become a member and you too will see the huge benefits. Great video Todd thanks for posting it. Any thoughts on the swing of the late Doug Sanders. Wide stance short backswing and very straight hitter. There were times he would go 72 holes without missing a fairway. I have been around long enough to have watched him play in the late sixties or very early seventies in Hartford (Wethersfield Country Club) and Pleasant Valley in Sutton Mass. Should be in the hall of fame with 20 wins on the PGA tour.

One of your best videos for sure Todd! Although everyone of them is awesome and you've literally covered everything Moe done and explained it so the average player or even beginner can follow these steps to become a more consistent and injuriy free golfer. I have another question if you dont mind answering. I am in two minds on the part after impact, do I :- continue with force with the arms until my torso is facing the target, or do I :- stop the force and torso at impact, and let the club drag my arms and torso through to the forward facing position? I first see Moe doing force all the way through but when I look at the overhead video, it definitely looks like hes just trying to hold on to the club like you said with the tug of war.

Great great stuff. Please - more of the overhead/over the shoulder shots. I really pick up a ton from seeing it from what you are seeing. Also, someday/someway cover the movement of the shoulders in the back swing. I was moving my shoulders in a straight back and forth motion on the back swing and could never get perfectly on plane until I joined the Gold program and had a coach (I'm looking at you Clay F) point out to me that I was NOT moving my lead shoulder in a slightly downward motion at the beginning of the back swing and that this was goofing up my ability to get on plane. This advise has made a TON of difference! Anyway, please fellow SP golfers - pay attention to this. Your videos are pure gold. Thanks.

Feet together drill. 10 swings moderately paced. Then do 1 foot flamingo swings primarily with your trail foot so it stays down. Go back to feet together and swing - now separate them by 1 ball length and swing. Separate by 1 more ball length and swing again until you are not lifting that trail foot. Also flaring them out is important

What a well done articulation and demonstration. I too am a wandering, frustrated (over 50) golfer, stuck in the mid/upper 80's for 25 yrs. Took a look at the Mike Austin stuff last year and felt some progress with letting the right leg extend for easing the hip rotation, and this year I'm finding the one-plane stuff. Your technical explanation has convinced me to give this a try. However, it's interesting to me, that I have to admit to myself that this looks so funky that there a certain psychological unwillingness to change, especially to not let that trail foot come up and around in the "picture perfect" follow through. LOL.

Todd, yes...those struggles are real. (Pointing the finger at me) Bad Habits are real. (Me) Do you have to focus on the bend in your right (trail) arm in the swing? I’m assuming as I was taught both elbows point down (not forwards or backwards) towards ground at Address and Impact? But I’m getting my right elbow pointing somewhere behind me. (At address and impact) Do I need to consciously be aware of my trail arm being bent at impact or does that happen naturally to a slight degree? I commend your work and Thank You again for all you do!
@ToddGravesGolf
@ToddGravesGolf 4 жыл бұрын
I fold the trial arm but keep the lead arm "wide". It sounds like you have a right shoulder issue and not an elbow issue. I see this often where you think your elbow is going to far when it is actually your shoulder.
@kevinbohunsky8637
@kevinbohunsky8637 4 жыл бұрын
Todd Graves Todd Graves no shoulder issue...I think I’m overthinking the role of the right arm getting in the way of the lead arm and club and face being square at impact. Since the right (trail) arm forms a shorter lever then the left (lead) arm, I’m guessing it would just naturally be bent slightly at impact? Thank You for your time and concern for comment! I will continue to read your book and practice the positions.
@teddythodo3302
@teddythodo3302 4 жыл бұрын
Kevin Bohunsky unless you’re actively trying to kill the ball with your right arm, it should be naturally bent to a certain degree. It also matters on your posture as well. If you’re more upright in your swing you’re going to have less right arm bend. Where as someone who’s really bent over and maintained that throughout the swing, generally they’re going to see more right arm bend.
@kevinbohunsky8637
@kevinbohunsky8637 4 жыл бұрын
teddy thodo that makes sense...I’m just trying to swing straight through the ball with my left arm to impact and trying to keep the right arm out of the way until after impact...but I’m forcing the right arm to be bent more at address so there is a greater angle (bend) below the elbow and above the elbow...so I’m guessing this is wrong cause at address both arms should extend straight away from the body, whereas my left arm is straight and my right arm is angled purposely somewhat which causes the elbow to point behind me instead of straight down to the ground. Thank You for the comments.

Hi Dee, you would be correct if your were simply combing terms, however in this video he is referring to total distance so left 80 to right 35 so the total absolute distance, usually in math textbooks the editors use temperature and the question usually is what is the temperature change of -80 degrees to 35 degrees, so basically when you pass through zero you are adding both numbers,
@normankleinberg5525
@normankleinberg5525 3 жыл бұрын
@Dee: Yea, that thought crossed my mind as well. However, strictly speaking, it's the difference between back and forward rotation he's after, so it's 35 - (-80) = 115 degrees, which is correct. Regardless, I can't turn my body to that extent, arthritic back. I LOVE Todd's approach and analysis, but it's a non-starter (I was hoping to attend one of his schools this Summer in Connecticut, but soon realized that physically the swing is just not possible for me).
