This video is part two of the Moebius Models 1:144th scale Discovery XD-1 video build series. Here I install the LED's for the main engine lighting & begin assembly of the numerous cargo pods to be mounted on the ship's spine.

Looks great so far Boyd, I really like what you are doing with the lights. Superb!! Info, the three Engine Housings should be touching each other, check the screen grabs. I really like the colors and the detail painting. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for all of your posts Boyd...they are super helpful in a bunch of different ways. Has anyone ever tried to make a shorter version of this model or the 1/144 version with less of the repeating cargo pods?

Coming along nicely. Not to take anything away from your sponsors, they're really great, but I found them to be a little too expensive for my pocket. However I did find a company based out of Italy called Arduino. They have an open source platform and specialize in this kind of stuff. You should check them out. I did and am very pleased with their products. Keep on rockin' sir.

Great video ! I'm really enjoying myself watching. I'd love to build one of those kits but I just don't have a place to put anything that size ! LOL!!!

Anyone ever tell you that you have a nice, measured tone to your voice? Almost soothing. Because this model is still pretty scary. You make it look easy, Boyd.

The engines firing in 2010 was super exciting, but in the books Discovery's engies were low thrust, long duration types. I think Discovery was capable of only 0.1Gs of acceleration, but the engines would operate for hours when activated. This is why Discovery had such a fragile, weak spine.

Not related DIRECTLY to the model but I thought I'd shout out a head's up-- There's supposed to be a FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY high-definition re-release of 2001: A Space Odyssey coming out later this year on Blu ray and allegedly 4K Blu ray format. I'd get the movie alone for the what's supposed to be a new restoration/hi-def remaster but I imagine there will be new extras on it, too. Possibly new documentaries, commentary, and so on the original Blu ray release should have had!!! Anyhow, back to our modeling! And again, I think P.J.C. 2.0 has an excellent idea about the base for this model, Boyd.

Update: The 4K Blu ray release WAS confirmed within the last 10 days... Still no date on it but I bet it will hit by summer. This summer is the 50th anniversary of the theatrical release of 2001: A Space Odyssey. To be honest, if you DIDN'T want to upgrade, the best way to get the film prior to this re-release to get 2001 is just to buy it in the 3-movie pack with The Shining and Clockwork Orange. There you get 3 of Kubrick's best films for $15 or less. And yes, this is just a repack of the older single-disc releases so all the bonuses are STILL on the discs. Your local Wal-Mart may also have the film (2001) available by itself in the $7.88 movie bin. I often find very good, classic films in those bins as much as I hate doing the "dumpster diving" routine in those bins and the $5.99 bin at Best Buy... I've still found many good films on Blu ray for LESS than the cost of a ticket to a brand-new movie. Seriously, at this point, if you're a videophile, there's no reason to buy things on DVD unless that's the only way you can watch them. DVDs just do NOT scale up well on HDTV half the time, they look horrible on 4K TV sets if you try to watch them at 4K resolution! Frankly, my favorite Kubrick film (which is probably on my Top 10 favorite films list; definitely in my Top 3 comedies behind Airplane and maybe Caddyshack) is still Dr. Strangelove which coincidentally was also James Earl Jones' ( voice of Darth Vader, Simba, and on-screen in many classic films) first movie. Dr. Strangelove is a tour-de-force for Peter Sellers (who plays at least 3 different characters under makeup) and George C. Scott who is hilarious as a sex-crazed SAC general. You have to experience Dr. Strangelove AND 2001at least once in your lifetime!

Nice work Boyd I presonaly think the Model would look good on a large display base designed to looks like the large monolith the Discovery found orbiting Jupiter in the movie hope you like the idea let me know if you do angin nice work can't wait to see the model all finished and lit up .
@AvengerII6 жыл бұрын
Great idea! It's obvious but still a good idea. I think that sort of scenario was described in the original novel and depicted in AT LEAST the second film, 2010. Now, the question be a SOLID black base, OR one painted with a starfield or WARP effect? I would go simpler myself -- the starfield effect would look better in the long run, IMHO. A warp effect might look tacky unless it's done ABSOLUTELY PERFECT and that's easier said than done. In actuality, the EVA pod of the cosmonaut in the second film was supposed to "touch down" on the monolith orbiting Io but the artifact didn't prove to be as solid as they thought! Of course, Bowman found that out ten years earlier! :)

So is your darker highlight color the same sort of mix, just with slightly more grey? In a future video could you also show how you do that wash, since I don't know how to get it that smooth. Thanks!

Hi, I've been enjoying your videos so far. I received this kit for Christmas from my oldest stepson. I haven't started it yet, I'm finishing one other kit. Could you please provide me with the web site where you found the photos of the studio model. I have found the two PE sets that you showed, but you also mentioned a set that has a ramp from the cargo door. Could you please provide me with a list of the ones for this kit. Thank you, I appreciate any help you give. Take care.

Hi Boyd, thank you so much for these video's. Very informative as well as inspiring! I do have two questions about the Vallejo putty and the mix with glue you used for placing the endplates without light leaks (11:00 - 11:30). 1. Did you use Vallejo 20ml Plastic Putty # 401? 2. What glue did you use in mixing with the Vallejo Putty?

Hi, I enjoy your channel and I'm greatly enjoying this series. Could you explain again what wire you use to light these models and where you purchase it? Thanks!
@TrekWorks6 жыл бұрын
it's called wrapping wire and it is .30 gauge in diameter. It's available here: www.Hdamodelworks.com

I saw a video where this guy used a full length brass road for the long center spine which I think may be better in terms of support.
@TrekWorks6 жыл бұрын
It depends on the thickness of the wall of the tubing. The metal tubing that comes with the kit has a very small center and it' fairly strong where brass is usually pretty thin. The best way of course would be a solid rod and then put seperate power sources in the front & rear.

I haven't been working on this model and just getting back into a little bit of modeling so I haven't invested in an air gun and paints for one so I have been using tamiya and testors spray cans. I cannot use pray paints wirth anything. Even spraying on primer it dripped, orange peeled, etc. I even washed and tried scuffing up the model with sandpaper before doing the primer. In other words everything I touch comes out awful. It's a good thing I didn't invest in an airgun. lol

So, Boyd, are you of the mind that using Lou Dalmaso's mask set would be detrimental to the look of the finished model? (Asking before I buy.)

It should be just fine sitting on the support rods that come with the kit. I just need to make their feet wider so it's more stable.
