A wonderful way to spend a lazy Sunday morning looking at master craftsmen making models of things I love: space craft, aircraft, mostly WW1 for those, so I guess it's the whole range, huh? After seeing a few, maybe I'll get off my duff and go to "the stash" to start something, or complete/work on my other projects. Good times!

Hi Boyd--so happy I came across your channel and these excellent videos! I'm one of those who built lots of models as a teen, usually without paint or with incorrect paints and a brush. I've resumed now and trying to take my game up several levels. I've learned a ton already from your videos. Thank you for the time and care in providing such a detailed walkthrough of the Discovery build. I have the kit, and your clear instruction has inspired me to do a first and install lighting. I'm working on a couple of other models to brush up on some skills before I tackle this, though. Thanks again for your help, and I look forward to seeing your next project.

I finished my version about 2 months ago and it also turned out great thanks to some tips from you. I chose not to light the engines for a logical reason. With a pod leaving for an EVA the engines would not be firing! I did also light the pod bay with plenty of bright white SMDs so that the interior would be more visible. To accentuate the exterior detail, I primed the model with gray primer and then airbrushed a very light gray to control the final look on the various surfaces. It came out great. But it is a very delicate model.

As far as the color of the model goes, the issue is that what we see on film is not what the filming miniature appears to look like when seen in person. They are, in effect, two different versions of the same ship. For myself personally, I want to experience the model as it appeared in the movie so, I always paint my models to reflect how they appeared on the screen, not necessarily how they looked in the studio. Others want to feel as though they have the actual filming miniature so they aim towards recreating the model regardless of how it appeared on film. Also, consider that the model makers understood how it would appear under lighting and intended for the perceived color to actually be white just as it appears on film. It's meant to look white. (IMHO)

beautiful Discovery!! Might I suggest, in the name of strength, an arrow shaft. They are carbon fiber and very strong, come in multiple diameters AND are hollow. Available online or at your local archery shop.

Wonderful build, the interior is amazing! I've been thinking about getting it but have the same issue of space to display it. By the way you should use some black board behind you setup so the model doesn't blend with wall.

There is a continuity error in 2010 about the pod remaining. All pods were lost in 2001. Frank's that killed him, Dave's that was lost when he exploded the hatch, and the last one he used for the trip beyond the infinite. If that's the only pod then your model is depicting the beginning of the trip.

What about attaching the pod to the bay with a thin clear plastic rod to avoid blocking the interior detail?

Would love to use modern carbon-fiber etc to do a model of this that didn't need to be supported on separate stands which really looks goofy. Though I do suspect that it would be a hell of a challenge to find any material light and rigid enough to enable a single central display stand. But I'd settle for a twin stand setup.

If you light the model against a greenscreen it'd be super easy to add a starfield.

I would recommend a sheet of matte black material behind the Discovery to simulate empty space and help the model stand out from that plain white wall. I wouldn't bother to stipple any stars on the background.... people always fuck that up, it's hard to make a decent star field.

I saw this model for sale in Sydney for over $150. Not cheap.

Those aren't cargo containers, they're fuel tanks.

What bothers me is in the movie, there was that large area with the cryo tubes that you see the guy jogging around. In the model with the hanger and the bridge, there doesnt look like there is any room for that. Maybe thats just a cinamatic error in the movie and nothing to do with the model, but that's just somthing I noticed. The model looks amazing though. Looks like a really plausable ship.

A solid rod wouldn’t be much stronger in bending than a hollow tube of the same diameter, and if the two had the same weight (i.e. if the tube had a greater diameter) then the tube would be stronger than the rod. (I’m dredging stuff up from the first year of my university course nearly 40 years ago here, but there’s quite a lot available if you search the web). That’s why structures such as bicycle frames are often welded up from tubular steel. So your hollow tube with the wiring inside is probably the most effective structural member that you could use.

I wonder if anybody has painted up this model of the Discovery One as it appeared in 2010: The Year We Make Contact with the sulfur deposits on the skin? I know now that the miniature in that film was WAY off in some dimensions although it still looks great tumbling above Io when the Leonov rendevzous with it! 2010 has its issues just like the novel it was adapted from did but was still visually interesting. RIP, Douglas Rain, voice of HAL 9000...

You just need a light under just to give a slight bit of light on the discovery... nothing too bright.

This model deserves a better location... perhaps turn that area into spaceships only and put a black wall behind it. Sorry, just what I would have done.. Enjoy it. One of these days, I hope to build one and have a place to put it myself.
