Polo was an amazing dribbler. I was privileged to watch him in Lagos, Nigeria against Lagos Stationery Stores club in his days. The entire stadium fell in love with him and cheering for him. All the fans wanted the ball to go to him so that he can display with the ball. Much respect Polo. Thanks for the ‘show’.

If the 70s were like today where Ghanaian footballers can go to Europe this guy would have been a multi millionaire. He was better than Messi. We called him the dribbling magician.

@@benardboateng1501 When you don't see something with your own eyes and people talk about it you will never believe it. Those of us saw him believed that he was better than Messi.
@user-gc5dx8fj5u
@user-gc5dx8fj5u 2 жыл бұрын
@@benardboateng1501 history will one day tell you that Messi (and dare I say Cristiano Ronaldo) were better players than Ronaldinho, simply because of the accolades and success they won. Yet, anyone that knows his football will tell you that when it comes down to technical ability on the ball, Messi and CR7 come nowhere near Ronaldinho. Ronaldinho could do things with the ball that Messi and CR7 could only dream off. I threw in that comparative analysis because the same argument holds when it comes to Mohammed Polo. Those of us who saw him play, have been forever grateful for that privilege to this day. It's not nostalgia at all, trust me. After all, we've also seen the great players of later or recent years and surely should be qualified to pass accurate judgement on players from both eras. Our assessment isn't based on hearsay or some written account. No, we've witnessed all these players play in real life. Polo at 17 years old, was part of the now-legendary Fearsome Fivesome of Accra Hearts of Oak in 1977. The Fearsome Fivesome are still the most revered front line in Ghana club football history and guess who was the most feared of that quintet? Yes, 17-year-old Mohammed Polo !! That should tell you all you need to know about the man. Some people are born with God-given footballing talent and Polo is one. Their natural ability isn't learned or coached. They're just born with it. Period.

Football history like this should be compiled and kept to teach young folks like us. It's very sad when I can easily watch when Chelsea won their first FA cup but I can't trace such records for Ghana. I love watching old matches a lot but I can't enjoy that from the Ghanaian perspective.

i had a unique opportunity to talk to Afro Joe Dakota of blessed memory at a party in his daughter's house in silver spring, md about 6 yrs ago Afro Joe of course was a legend as well and it was a rare chance to talk football with for like 3 or 4 hours straight after listening to so many stories, i asked him the ultimate question: who is the greatest player of all time? i desperately wanted to know.. and without hesitation said this: Mohammed Polo !! Afro Joe had seen them all, ftom Yara to Asamoah Gyan, and he said emphatically: Mohammed Polo...then he told me stories about Polo that made me have goosebumps. i tell you.even in this interview Polo is too humble, he is not really able to tell how great he was, he is omitting magical details, and you cannot tell his true greatness by listening to him...i wish i had taped my conversation with Afro Joe.. Polo is the greatest!!!

In life, there are few people who'll arrive on this earth blessed with a unique talent that can't be coached or explained. They're just born with that natural ability like it's a divine gift and you can go an entire lifetime without ever seeing again, anyone blessed with that level of talent. There's a handful of these people in Sports. Mohammed Ahmed Polo was one such person. There's no other way I can explain or describe the man. I am still in awe and dazzled by Polo's talent today, as I was watching him in the 70s. The biggest regret is that the younger ones today never saw him or have any footage of him to reference.

It is unfortunate Ghana was then playing politics with Black Stars captaincy and so 'refused' to qualify for world cup. Hearts of Oak should get very skillful filmmakers to shoot films using the matches he participated in. It would be a goldmine. The displays of Ahmed Mohamed alias Polo have blighted that of Pele. Pele is made by his playing at world cup. Polo was a promising bud that shriveled.

You have to remember, many of us did not only have the privilege of watching Polo during his playing days, but we've also seen all the other great Ghanaian players who've come along since Polo and can state with all authority and confidence, none of those players was anywhere near Polo in ability. Great recollection, although I think you meant Bengally Sylla, a player who also had a sweet left foot and was equally feared on the continent during the 70s and early 80s. The year was 1977. It was with Mufulira Wanderers. We were 5-2 down, semi-final 2nd leg of the elusive African Cup and with 20 minutes to go. Polo delivered his magic on a day and in a manner never again seen in Ghana football and before long, my beloved Hearts of Oak were in the Final for the first time. Polo is unquestionably the most talented player Ghana has ever produced and nobody who saw him will ever dispute that.
