TheOffspringFan7 I think the main reason as to why those are more likeable is that they are not arrogant and some level of wisdom that varies from that group.

Well yeah that's probably the main reason I (and most people) don't like Elayne, Egwene and Faile. I mean arrogance is bearable in characters who actually have something to back it up with (Cadsuane, Sorilea, Tuon, also Rand and Mat in the later books). Elayne has an incredibly annoying personality overall, Egwene is a total turncoat and she only gets to prove herself in the very late books, while she's super full of herself from the start and Faile... well... she's just too arrogant and too impulsive for her own good considering she's not really a big political player nor a channeler, and not even a fighter...
@Murcuryzgirl
@Murcuryzgirl 5 жыл бұрын
@TheTorment, @MatCauthon, I agree. I'm not all the way through the series, but Elayne seems just paper thin. The most infuriating the female characters have been to me is in TSR, when Nynaeve (my favorite) is stuck with Elayne, and Moiraine is totally sidelined.

@@TheTorment Although I do like Faile, it may be the unpopular opinion but I do. Elayne while having a couple of cool moments is irritating, and while I loved Egwene on my first read through I am disliking her character the more I reread. I do however respect her climbing of the political ladder once she gets caught by Elaida.

I felt Moiraine had a lot of great scenes with just about every character she spent significant time with. One of my favorite small moments of hers was shared with Perrin when just after he caught Faile watching him and relayed his concerns with her possibly being a darkfriend. Her bemused reaction of essentially saying that she probably just thought he was hot and was staring at the way he filled out his shirt.

Moraine and Suion not being gifted with a final scene together (or even a POV where they think about the other) before everything went down is still heartbreaking imo. Really killed alot of the reread of New Spring for me

Personally, I think that Moiraine was a bit too passive with Rand after Eye of the World. The mistrust and disrespect Rand had towards her, in my opinion, was her own fault, since she pushed him away like that. But I think that, as you said, she admitted her mistake, and I came to love her as a character at that one time when Egwane asked why she was doing as Rand told her, and she answered "Because I rememberd how to controll saidar". That, I think, was the best part of her character building and really showed that humbleness you described here.

Ah. Good examination. Never thought she was passive. That character is fire. I started the series with New spring and loved her from the moment she was on the pages. Again,I strongly feel it should have been her at the end,seeing Rand walk away and not Cadsuane. It would have been awesome to simply go through their reactions on seeing each other...
@TheTorment
@TheTorment 6 жыл бұрын
Actually I'd love to see an examination of Cadsuane. As much as I love pondering about the WOT characters, I never really had her figured out. She kinda appears to fill in Moiraine's shoes, but she also seems like an old and grumpy version of Nynaeve, and most of the time she seems to impede Rand's development and work against him instead of helping him. Her character is a very weird variation of the Gandalf-type and she seems to be both a very important character and an unimportant one that sits in the sidelines, and to be both simple and complex when it comes to personality

The further I progress in the books, the more I appreciate Moraine. In the beginning, her reluctance to tell Rand and the others what was happening and why I thought very high handed. It was always 'her way or else with no explanation. Gradually I came to appreciate her, her patience wirh Rand and her influence. When she went into that mirror with Lanfear I felt her loss. Rand did too

Moiraine is awesome. She is one Aes Sedai I don't hate (besides Nynaeve)...My least favourite group of characters in this series are the Aes Sedai and White Tower. But Moiraine I always kinda liked. cried like crazy when she died and it was so perfect when Mat saved her and she met Rand again! With every re-read I hate Egwene more and more, but curiously I like Nynaeve more after re-reads..
@TheTorment
@TheTorment 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's how it works :) Egwene is kinda likeable at the beginning but then she just becomes a huge asshole to everyone from the 'Two Rivers Fellowship of the Ring' because she instantly buys 100% into the White Tower agenda, stops being Egwene and wants only to be 'The Aes Sedai' and it seems like she constantly opposes Rand because she cares about her own career more than about him or his Dragon Reborn stuff... Also she's the last person to ever acknowledge anyone else's growth, up to the very last books she thinks of Rand as an egomaniacal Dragon Reborn, of Mat as an irresponsible prankster kid and of Perrin as a shy and unimportant simpleton, even when someone throws the evidence of such growth in her face Nynaeve on the other hand first comes off as a condescending and easy-to-enrage jerk but her behavior eventually becomes kinda adorable, and, unlike Egwene, she remains very independent and loyal to her friends to the very end, to the point of being the only person that Dark Rand trusts despite his madness and paranoia. And another thing that I love about her is that she matures and develops over the course of the books, but she doesn't really change much. Her priorities, beliefs and general behavior stays the same, she just becomes wiser and more confident, but her overall personality doesn't change as much as all the other main characters'

Definitley agree, Egwene had so many badass moments in the latter part of the series and I actually really enjoyed her training with the wise ones. Probs my fav Egwene line is when she says to Tuon in an arguement "I plan to live centuries," Egwene hissed. "I will watch your empire crumble, Fortuona. I will watch it with joy."

Moiraine doesn't take Rand to the Tower because she knows the Black Ajah is hunting him, and the Red Ajah has a 50/50 chance of killing him as well. This isn't arrogance. She trains him herself because she doesn't know who else to trust. This isn't arrogance either. ..... but is Moiraine arrogant in general? Yes, yes she is 🤣

Moiraine is the soul of wheel of time. I always get choked up at the parts when she dies and when she comes back. She is such a great character I think it was necessary for her to go away for a while so the reader can focus on the other characters.

Daniel- nice summary. Few things : Suan and Moiraine extend a deep level of trust to each other .They both have their own tasks, and I'm not entirely sure which is the easier. Funny how Tom appears in the two rivers ,in this insignificant little village , at roughly the same time, think that's a pointed coincidence. Moiraine has two occasions to glimpse her own future, and these are the making of her. Suan didn't have that advantage. In the early book she(M)seems to do her best to guide Rand and the boys but is as much in the dark as she can be. I would say the first three books are a vast learning experience for her, which she handles as well as only Moiraine can, certainly better than anyone including the reader. She does keep you guessing .That's what's great about all of the books that include her. Moiraine always knows a thing or two more than anyone else and keeps those to herself..Anyway nice Job

I just have to defend Egwene a bit. Her handling of the White Tower, to me, was fantastic, and her final weave....so epic. There are things that I don't like about her, but not nearly so many as Elayne. I have to skip parts of Elayne's story because she annoys me so much. Back on topic, I agree with one of the other comments that Sanderson didn't make Moiraine as strong as I would have liked. The prophecy "Rand will surely fail" without Moiraine made me want her to do some seriously bad ass things in the final book.
@IAmEki

I definitely agree on Egwene. I think people don't think about the situation she was put in when she became the leader of the Tower in exile. She often acts in a self-important way, but that's because she HAS to in order to handle the Tower.

I love Moiraine, however I think her only downfall in my opinion is that she is way too secretive. I understand why but I think she could have made much better headway with the boys in the beginning if she was more open with them rather than trying to control the amount of information they had. She expected respect and trust while giving them very little to go on willingly. The whole you'll know what I think you should and you'll follow me simply because I am Aes Sedai and I know best, gets on my nerves. I wouldn't trust her either. She does admit this later and becomes much more likeable. As a reader seeing behind the lines I realize that if she had given too much away at the beginning the story would have been much shorter, but then again there are 14+ books (not that I am complaining. just an observation)

She was such a rewrite of Gandalf that we have Lanfear at docks being the equivalent to the Balrog in Moria and of course we get the return. When it comes to her relationship with Thom I find this really indicative of how romantic relationships are the Achilles Heel of this series. Romances often seem incipient and/or contrived in WoT.

Wow, just noticed that I seem to be the only one not hating on Elayne and Egwene as much. I mean they both do have a lot of really foolish, "skippable" book moments especially relationship-wise but overall I actually find their characters and their character arcs badass. One popular character that I actually find consistently annoying is Faile, she even drags Perrin down with her for me

(Spoilers Ahead) I loved Moiraine she was the only Aes Sedai (other than Rand's childhood friends) who didn't saw Rand as a soulless tool. Her character reminds me of my mother who is a psychiatrist. I was sad when she presumably died when she entered the portal with Lanfear. Her absence until her return left an emphathic void in the emotional support of the Dragon Reborn. Cadsuane was clearly an inadequate substitution of Moiraine. I hate Cadsuane's character and I think her influence in Rand was one of the factors which almost caused his fall to the Shadow despite the fact that her action accidentally helped Rand achieve his enlightened state.
@ryussjgod7148
@ryussjgod7148 6 жыл бұрын
I see the reason why Moiraine doesn't want to bring Rand to the White Tower. It is stated in The Great Hunt that what she and Siuan where trying to accomplish would have them stilled on the spot for keeping a male that could Channel let alone the Dragon Reborn from the White Tower. All Aes Sedia of the White Tower are trained to fight and Gentle men that can Channel. So this course of action that she and Siuan have taken is extremely thin ice and it is getting thinner and thinner.

the Blue ajah is the single mided ajah. and the greens are just lusty firebrands. The "battle Ajah" is never even attempted to be lived up to. in my mind the blue and green are the two ajahs that are amorphous with generally passionate people. but the Blue is literally the ajah that devotes itself to causes. not anyone single cause overarcing the ajah but each womans own passion.

my favourite moment's for Moiraine's relationships were with Egwene and Rand: for Egwene it was when they have a conversation in the tent while travelling and at the end Egwene has the realization that Moiraine was talking to her like an equal, not someone below her. Its small but I love it. For Rand my favourite moment would be after Rand uses Balefire on the hounds and Moiraine is trying to talk to him about it and he's just gonna blow her off until she pleads that he listen to her advice. When she makes her vow to him and he apologizes to her, the two finally finding a positive place to communicate. I love it

Moraine is such an awesome character. Had the docks not happened, Natrim's Barrow never would have happened. No knew how to guide Rand like Moraine. Cadsuane saw him as Magnum opus of feet's she had accomplished in her life. That is where she went wrong.I think a reason why people don't like Egwene is because she has never supported Rand in anything. Don't get me wrong, she cared deeply for him, but he was always just a foolish man who did nothing but stumble and bungle things up to her.

Solid analysis. Nice point about Moiraine being RJ's "direct" voice in the story. Not counting Mat in TGS, Moiraine's characterization in AMoL, to me, seemed most 'off' of all the Brandon Sanderson books. It would make sense that the most "personal" voice of Jordan's work would be the hardest for Brandon to replicate.

I don't get it, why is Moiraine considered all that? She's barely in the series. Sure she has some great moments but if anyone deserves the "wise wizard" award surely it's Cadsuane. You think it's random that Cadsuane is the one to realize Rand's still alive in the end? If Moiraine was supposed to be the "Randalf" character sure it'd be her.

15 actually (with New Spring), and it is such a complex series (plotwise, introduction/buildup/payoff, character-wise) that it is even better on 2nd or 3rd re-read. Personally, I started reading it when only the first 7 books were published, and whenever a new book was released, I reread the entire series as preparation for it. As I am currently on my 2nd complete reread, this means I have read the first seven books 8 or 9 times, and every time it is at least as good as the first time. In a very real sense, Randland has become a "mental holiday destination" for me, somewhere I go every few years, for a few hours each day.

If we are looking at the farm boy wise wizard trope, Moraine possibly may be better in fact than even Bilbo Baggins. though, he's not really a far boy. she reminds me a little of even say, Baowolf. As far as character construction is concerned. I won't count things like the Odyssey because, they are seen more as fact for the people at that time period. When it comes to the wise old wizard archetype,, for all time character development and, thought and, everything that goes into a character in a piece of work in fantasy, there are only three that come to mind, ranked. Gandolf, three. Mourain two and, Merlin one. Again, this is all just my opinion. I could just be wrong here. According to others.

I actually didnt like her much but you have definitely changed my mind a bit, quite a few things i hadnt seen that way before but after hearing you talk about it those things have more depth to them. I initially couldnt stand her reading through the books originally because of the sheer amount of manipulation she subjects the rest of the group to, they are put through hellish situations and she does the bare minimum to alleviate that stress and fear all while playing mind games and skirting around the truth and as a reader it really p___es you off...then at the end of book one she doesnt actually do anything; Rand has a largely independent awakening (that really didnt involve her nor was it due to her) and kills Aginor then teleports to Tarwins Gap and saves that too...so what good is she?

Typical corrections necessary for a Daniel Greene WoT video: - The Green Ajah are not single minded. They are actually generalists, and the first Green sister with a major speaking part calls Moiraine out for her Blue Ajah single-minded fixation on big picture causes that blinds her to the human side of things. - Moiraine has absolutely nothing to do with justice. For good or ill, she prioritizes success over justice. She is willing to start wars and ignore crimes if it will help her agenda. This can be good at times, if you focus on a greater good, over strict interpretation of justice. But you can't say that sort of person is some sort of exemplar of justice. - Moiraine does not allow the the readers to have a wider view. I think Daniel is basing that claim on her chapter consulting Vandene about prophecies and backstories, but that's nothing to do with Moiraine as a character. She has about four PoV chapters, one of which highlights how badly she is misreading Rand and friends and the others have her being enigmatic and secretive until her "death scene". - "This revelation is why Moiraine is so jarringly different” between “New Spring” and her introduction in “Eye of the World”. I think a better explanation for the difference is the passage of 19 years. - The video claims that Moiraine starts out an adherent of the Tower and has changed by the time she shows up in Eye of the World. Except in New Spring, she is going behind the backs of both Amyrlins, and higher-ranking sisters, while fleeing the White Tower and its plans for her and revealing Tower secrets to an outsider. And in Eye, she is still determined to take Rand to the White Tower, according to plans she made long ago with Siuan. Aside from her Ajah's rivalry with the Reds, and her personal grudge against Elaida, there is no indication of any conflict with the Tower establishment. - Moiraine does not give Rand space until she gets to know him, she starts off coming on strong, giving him a combination tracking and mind control device. She flips out on the boys when they express distrust for her destroying a ferry and misgivings about going to Tar Valon. She only gives Rand space in between the first two books, when he is looking for guidance and advice, and she tells Siuan this is a control technique. - Moiraine never backs down when Rand is right. Rand just ignores her and does what he thinks he needs to and she tries to stop him, but he calls her bluff, goes behind her back or ignores her, and she complains and criticizes and tries to gaslight him, framing his past activities as mistakes or failures. She NEVER admits she was wrong, often never really grasping the scope of her mistakes. - 99% of Aes Sedai who are not wise enough to let Rand travel down a path she does not control, INCLUDES Moiraine. And I want some proof that Nynaeve is NOT that wise, that she WOULD try to control Rand. Nynaeve NEVER tries to control him, or anyone else. She offers her opinions and suggestions, but she is all about freedom and agency. - Lan does not recognize the greatness of Moiraine or the wisdom of her actions, he follows her because he believes the cause is worthy, and because it is a way out of the trap of his legacy as king of Malkier. Lan often takes Rand’s side, especially when Moiraine tries to control or manipulate him, because he recognizes in Rand a kindred spirit. - The interpretation that Lan is darker in the later books, because he thinks the world is doomed without Moiraine is a pulled straight out of someone’s ass. Lan is explicitly stated to be affected by the trauma of a severed Warder bond, a pain Moiraine afflicted him with unnecessarily, as a result of her secretive and controlling habits. She knew she was going to “die” and she could have released Lan ahead of time, but instead she left the bond in place, so the compulsion she put in place would kick in, regardless of how Lan suffered or was violated by it. If Lan is affected by his perception of the events, it’s because he is conflicted between the loss of a companion and partner of two decades and her betrayal of their relationship by basically raping his mind.

Moraine is awesome I love her. But she is defo controlling first few books anyway. She changes over time. And after she dies she is a different woman. She grows as a character but first 3/4 books she wants to lead rand around she even considers seducing him but is shown that would be a bad idea. It’s good how she grows but defo controlling

sorry I had to thumbs down this video. First video of yours I did not think you were on the money. You never talk about how arrogant, controlling and just plain wrong about so very much early on. she alienates rand and Mat and manages to make even the readers distrust the tarvalon witches within half a book. If she hadnt been told to faux kill herself and take lanfear with her she would have been a lame character who never lived up. I always thought robert jordan realized he had messed up his wise counsellor when he took her with rand into the Aiel waste. He decided to get rid of her. All readers knew she was still alive so it created a sense of her looking over the shoulder of rand ect.
