Final engine run and systems check prior to maiden flight:
Moki 250 radial engine, with fuel pump
1/3 scale scratch-built Nieuport 24bis
Seidel custom 32x17 scale propeller
Jeti radio with “sound on event" announcements
Here is some background, plus more details about the plane:
I made the video for the builder of the Nieuport 24bis, so he could see what was finally done to his creation, and that it was ready for its maiden flight. The model was built by Alan Yendle, a nationally known and respected scratch scale builder who lives in Waco, Texas. At 91 he built this 1/3 scale, 107", 53 pound Nieuport sized for a Moki 250cc Radial gas engine. He started the build in 2020 and finished at the end of 2021. On the RCSB website, his building thread details, incredibly, how the plane was built. Everything is scale in how the surfaces all move with cables and torque rods. There are no servos in the tail or wings, and no RC pushrods. Alan is excited to see it fly..
The plane itself is very unique as indicated by the 24bis designation. First flown in 1917, it was obsolete before entering service. The French had stability problems with the original tail, and had to fit it with a Nieuport 17 tail (hence the bis) which loosely means "diversion or change". Later they solved the issues, and it became the standard Nieuport 24, which saw service mostly as a trainer.
I wanted to show in the video how I hand start a COLD Moki 250cc engine, and to showcase the Jeti radio I fly, a DC24, especially the “sound on events” feature. Announcing the actions of the switches is a significant safety feature. No time to have a senior moment, I'm 75. When you fly several complicated planes with the same radio, switches often have different functions, depending on the model. It's a great double check, a refresher, and coupled with the PreFlight feature in the radio, makes things much safer.
The Avionics consist of two 5200 Jeti Lon Batteries, connected to a Central Box 320. There are four receivers in the plane, three of the receivers are capable of flying the entire plane independently. The receivers are a R12 Assist REX as Primary, a standard R12 REX backup, a R3 REX 900 MHz backup and a standard R3/RSW Switch receiver. Servos are a mix of Jeti and Hacker. The engine is pumped with a Hacker Fuel Pump regulated to 30% output with overflow. A Rotoflo tank and a servo on Choke round out the airborne package. The propeller is a custom scale propeller from Seidel Props in Germany and the pilot is from Axel Scale Pilots, also from Germany. Both are outstanding additions to a wonderful example of model aviation.

Modeling and Flying Airplanes is a hobby that builds great Character in a man. It takes a man of great character to spend a year of his time building a perfect replica and seeing it crash into a pile of splinters on its maiden flight. Say it isn't so. Unfortunately we did not get to witness such a Character building event today.

@@Mainbusfail Todd, the Jeti system is one of the easiest to program and more importantly monitor your system in flight...much less post flight analysis of over 50 data points in the relaxed atmosphere of your home computer... for instance...I found on the Carbon Cub (video coming) ...I had an Overheating issue in the cockpit and where the kit suggested to put most of the equipment... had I not had telemetry monitoring of all my systems including...( receivers with heat sensors), I probably would have had a bad day...to that end...I made changes and all is nominal. Again thanks for your interest... Yes, the radio does have Voice Activated Execution...but more importantly it will talk to you while flying, giving you information you asked for... invaluable......

Thanks very much for the comment...the prop is made by (Mario) Seidel Props in Germany, and is custom for this plane and engine...at 32x17 it has the same scale outline as the original in 1917... The mass of the propeller and shape contains the power (15 hp) of the Moki while adding to the idle smoothness....this is the FLIGHT PROP and not a display prop...

Beautiful Nieuport! Very realistically detailed 1/3 scale model, with the exception of the wheels, which look a lot like wagon wheels, although they are roughly the correct diameter, they are slightly translucent and you can see in the video, sunlight shining through the left wheel, some custom aluminum wheels with pneumatic tires would look 100% percent realistic, however it may affect the balance of the aircraft, you could just paint the existing wheels with opaque paint that would not allow the sunlight to shine through, however, it is a detail that is very minor and one that many people would not notice. I hope it flies as good as it looks and sounds. Thank you for posting this video! Please have an excellent and awesome day! Happy flying! ☀️✨🙏🏻✈️

Hello England...this is Texas...stay tuned for the Maiden, and later a folding wing CARF Corsair... engine start and systems check....with a Moki 250-7.... The idle you heard on the Nieuport was 800 and just as steady as it can be....throttle response was like a 2stroke...These engines do benefit from a Pump... but you must FEEL the sound it makes to really enjoy...

Yes they do..."Sky King" was my favorite TV Show growing up....actually what sealed my fate and life in Aviation. Glad you adopted the Moniker. 😊I forgot to say, that the Radials require constant TLC.... Warmup...oiling...4,000 max RPM...they ARE NOT your garden variety Model airplane engine.... they talk to you.... If you have not, and have the time...read the (show More) above...the description is full of interesting Narrative about the builder, plane, engine, radio...and more and thanks for the comment...

It was only natural that when the Jeti System offered "sounds on event" as an option, I jumped at the chance to incorporate it into my flying regime. If you have not read the description above do so...there is a lot of information in there. Third paragraph will answer a lot of your questions... Thanks again for the comments
