I 1st started experimenting with buckshot back in the 80's. But I didn't start trying to mold my own shot until the early 2000's. In this video I pull out the old Lee 2 cavity .311 mold that I started with and it still works great! It's easier than you think to make round lead ball!

Thanks for all the great work you do! I reloaded and shot trap & skeet as a teen but had long gotten out of it, selling my awesome old Texan FW! I just got a MEC 600 Jr. this summer. While it's not the same build quality, it performs quite well. After watching this video, I ordered the Lee 18 pellet 00 Buck mold from Precision Reloading. I've recently reloaded 25 lbs of store-bought 00 Buck by watching your reloads. I paid $85 plus shipping for the 25 lb bag, but now I can't find it at any price. I'm scrounging up every bit of lead I can find, and have also bought some steel 00 Buck, Alliant Steel powder and some TPS wads to try. Here's praying that I never have to use any of them for anything but hunting and practice. Keep the faith, Brother, and never forget what a truly blessed man you are! Hope you're kicking that dang Type II's butt!

Update, To get the LEE 18 Cavity molds to fill out all the cavities (including the #4 BUCK), you have to push the mold sprue hole right up to the pour spout and have it pressurize the cavity while filling through the sprue, not pouring through the air thus cooling the lead before it even gets into the mold. Since I started casting that way, I have near 100% success with all cavities filling out!

Lee molds are so easy to use. The sprue is cut from the pellet and can be dumped right back in the pot on the fly, not fished out of a water bucket and snipped later. That's big, especially if you make a lot of shot.

@showproja
@showproja 3 жыл бұрын
The thing you have to consider with the Lee is that you get 3 pellets per two snips, and only one of those has the flat sprue side. With all other brands you have to make one cut per pellet, and they all have the sprue side. If you're cutting up 1000 pellets, you would have 333 fewer snips with the Lee. That's a lot of time saved, plus you don't have to deal with the wet sprue with the Lee, because you've already recycled it in the pot.

If you ever use the LEE 18 cavity Buckshot mold you will find that the top row always cast well, but the second and third rows do not because the lead has to flow deeper into the mold and pass through a cavity and a choke point for the the lead to get to the second row, and for the third row, has to pass through 2 cavities and 2 choke points! So unless the lead is screaming hot and the mold is screaming hot, the bottom row never gets enough lead into it before the lead in the second choke point solidifies! And if you think the 18 cavity 00 Buckshot mold is bad, the 18 cavity #4 buckshot mold is IMPOSSIBLE as the cavities and choke points are so tiny! That is why this guys molds do so well, even when cold is because the hot lead did not have to pass through anything, it just goes right in and if it chills, it has already filled the one and only cavity it needs to fill! I wish I had gotten these instead of the LEE buckshot molds, even though I love all my other LEE molds. I just wish they had a 5.56 mold heavier than 55 grains.

Hey Wade...just found your channel and you inspired me to start loading shot shells. I have been reloading metallics for about 6 years including casting my bullets (or boolits, I should say) in every caliber I shoot except 2.23. All my lead comes from range scrap. That being said, is range scrap lead too hard to use for slugs and buck shot? I will probably always use a shot cup wad for both. Thanks again for great education! Bless y’all from the heart of Texas!

I figure when crap hits the fan, if I run out of buckshot,, I will use old electric wire fencing and wire clippers. Plenty of old rusty steel fence around my area. But I imaging we could use just about anything at that point. rocks if need be..

Hello greetings from Chile, I follow your videos carefully and I thank you for all the help and information that you provide, I have bought the busckshot molds that you use frequently but they are deformed with bad appearance, I think it may be temperature problems of the alloy, which temperature do you recommend to work? Thanks, regards Sebastian.
@BubbaRountreeOutdoors
@BubbaRountreeOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Sebastian! I keep my Lee production pots between 7 & 8! That's hot; around 750 degrees! The alloy needs to be very hot as well as your mold in order to get full pours in your molds. Wade

I'm thinking of converting birdshot to slugs but I have a dilemma. The wad petals are at the end of the hull when I cut the top off. If I roll crimp the hull over the petal ends would that cause a serious issue? Basically instead of trimming the petals shorter and roll crimping up to the ends of the petals I'd just roll crimp the ends of the petals inside the hull. Or if I cut the petals off completely would that risk fouling my barrel with more lead than with petals?

Wade, I was wondering since I can’t get buckshot or buckshot molds , I saw that you used split shot but I can’t even find that. I was in the store the other day and I saw 177 copper bbs that you use in a regular BB gun , can I load them in my 410 hulls that I have for my Taurus judge. Thanks bob

hi wade; I saw your video on Russian slug molds; and got me one. now I'm smelting wheel weights for lead. don't know if its normal but I'm getting some kind of blue film floating on top. and won't skim off. can I go ahead and cast slugs, or do I have to get rid of the blue film. thanks for video and website.

I watch most of your videos trying to learn. I am in the process of changing birdshot loads to slug loads. What I need to confirm is can you use the 1 1/8 shot powder load that came in the hull with a 7/8 lee slug? These are federal multi use hulls. I cut them to 2 1/4 dumped the shot and wad and used a BPI HCD 21 wad with the pettales half cut off. Lee slug COSC and roll crimp. 2" OAL exactly. Since the slug is way lighter than the 1 1/8 will it work?
@nukerco1453

I use the 1oz Lee slugs in 1oz shotshells if I use the 1 1/8 they perform like magnums make sure your gun is rated for magnums or use same size shell
