One additional tip: round the corners before applying Leukotape. This lessons the chance of it catching on your sock and peeling at the edges.

I have a friend while hiking the Wonderland Trail used Leukotape and Vaseline (which creates a barrier between the sock and the tape).

Necessity is the mother of invention. Like your tip on the the wax paper! The advantage leukotape has over bandaids or moleskin is the superior adhesive that is on the other side of the cotton tape. Concerning the adhesive with moleskin, they do tell you to rub the adhesive side with your fingers until it gets warm, then apply. Supposedly this serves to activate the adhesive better. However, I have not tried this, so cannot comment. With adding a softening material (author here elected to use toilet paper), bandaids are no longer necessary. I might add that a nonstick soft material could serve better than toilet paper, but that is just something else you have to carry. Moleskin: Does it have a purpose? It is designed not to cover, but to surround. That is why it is thicker than leukotape. You use one to several layers to build up a "castle wall", like a donut, around the blister or serious hot spot. Therefore, the blister never makes contact or friction. The only question is the adhesive. Will rubbing it activate it enough to keep it in place? I don't know. If not, I suppose one can surround the moleskin with leukotape. The theory behind moleskin is superior. I suppose one can use leukotape in a similar fashion as moleskin, but you will need twice the amount of tape because leukotape is half the thickness. I am going to put it and leukotape to the test on our upcoming rim to rim to rim Grand Canyon trek. I know myself and one other person that is going develops hot spots and blisters (despite great shoes and socks) after so many footfalls (17 miles it seems for us, and that is flat ground). Having that knowledge ahead of time will in theory help us prevent or at least deal with the hot spot or blister. We know ahead of time where it will happen because we have put in the miles ahead of time. We all have a final 30 mile flat ground walk to test this out, but the ultimate test will be the actual trek. Will let you know. Thanks for informative video.

I have tried sooo many different tapes for feet application, because I want to do thru-florida. Moleskin, KT tape, Leukotape, different Band-aid, Nexcare, etc. Leukotape is the ONLY one that can stay put and didn't bump up under my feet, no matter how wet my skin became. The downside of Leukotape is the adhesive can penetrate to the other side of the tape, and adhered to socks. Bit of annoying, but acceptable.
@RVAHikerGirl

Absolutely! Leukotape is king! Its's not perfect, but the best solution that I can find after much trial and error. Maybe sock liners specifically when you use leukotape so they don't ruin your socks? Thanks for watching!

I have semi deformed toes, and broken my feet, toes, ankles all that many times from extreme sports. well got heavily into climbing awhile back, and the hikes was killing my feet, and I realized that I legit had to mole skin my entire first three toes on each foot because the way the toes sit on one another, and over lap cause massive blisters. I am gonna try this now, cause im gonna be getting back into climbing again soon , and hiking alot more, and gonna need something. those rolls legit, are very long, and seem like they will work great thank you for the video!

@@RVAHikerGirl I happily passed on your tips and a link to your channel to all my hiking pals; I only wish is I could pass it on to all the out of state “friends” we get here! I live in the same county as RMNP, and I go there often. I think I’m going to pack a few extra “butterflies” like you made, and extra strips. Out of staters come woefully over-packed and worse the one who come UNDER-packed! I once led a group of French teens visiting here for the summer on a hike of the Park , chose a only slightly difficult, mostly gorgeous hike. Naturally, gave everyone a list of what to wear, sunscreen, water,etc. As I was making my way through the group, starting at the lead position and making my way to the end to catch any stragglers I found more than one kid in basically flip-flops/shower shoes and tried to hide my alarm. When I questioned the kid en français, she says back to me in English “We are French! We do not hike!” I tried not to react, just with a bright “Alright, let me know if you need anything!” In my head I am screaming do French teens get blisters, broken ankles, sprains, sun burn?? Gratefully, there were no incidents and the hike included a small alpine creek that several kids had there feet in as we stopped for lunch. I’m guessing you have a ton of stories just as crazy as mine! And I would love to hear them along with your tips on how to avoid, mitigate what could go south really fast! Here in CO, every year we get a handful of sad stories of hikers who forgot one of the essentials (Be prepared for a change in weather conditions! My favourite!) and suffers the consequences. Keep up your terrific channel!!

Different things work for different people. Glad you found a bandage system that works great for you. I love Leukotape because it doesn't come off after stream crossings and sweat from extremely hot temps. It only comes off when I take it off. I haven't had that same sort of luck with Moleskin or bandaids. Moleskin always slides around on my foot and tends to be everywhere except where I actually need it.

Leukotape is just a brand name of Kinesiology tape. You can pick up many other brands or store brand Kinesiology tape in any drug store or Walmart with the paper backing already on it and in 16 foot rolls pre-perfed every 12 inches for about half the price of Leukotape. When you cut it to cover hot spots on your feet you should round the corners, it prevents lifting and coming loose or bunching. Same with the Moleskin. Make sure your feet are completely dry. Coat your feet with a good dry antiperspirant like Degree before you put your socks and shoes back on it cuts down on friction. Change your socks often and let them dry hanging on your pack keeping spares. We use both Mole skin and Kinesiology tape in the military in our med kits to take care of our feet.

This video is going on 3 years old now but even so I still don't like using moleskin for anything anymore. I have never had leukeotape ever come off my feet except when I want it to. So no issues there. Unfortunately as a hiker, I don't carry antiperspirant out with me on the trail for hot spots. But if your putting it on before you feel a hot spot or already have a foot issue when you get out of your car that's an excellent idea. I know military personal do know how to take care of their feet. Your experience with this is priceless. Thanks for the info and for your service to our country. ~RVA~

Kinesiology tape and leukotape P are not the same thing. One is stretchy the other is not. Kinesiology tape found in drug stores are heavily branded and marketed, and thus are also more expensive. Also, the stretchy variety (leukotape K) does not adhere quite as long as the "P" variety. Moleskin will quit immediately if it gets wet.

Do you mean the white stuff? If so, still not as good as leukotape. At least in my opinion.

@@alisonhikesshenandoahnatio2183 Hey there just look for the white box pictured in the video. Leukotape P - I am not familiar with any other kind besides this one. This roll will last me for a year or more. Hope that helps your search.

I will have one coming out soon actually. Stay tuned. Hiking boots & trail runners vary from person to person based on your foot shape and foot issues. It's best go to an outfitter and try on lots of different kinds to see what feels best for you. I have both boots and trail runners but prefer trail runners about 90% of the time.
