So glad you reacted to Pantera. One of the most important bands in metal. They kept metal going through the 90s when grunge and alt rock dominated. RiP Dimebag and Vinnie Paul. Cowboys From Hell and Far Beyond Driven are great albums too. Pantera's is called groove metal. It is not as thrash sounding as band like Overkill, Kreator, and Slayer. Or even 80s Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax. If you have not done Anthrax then Among the Living is a must. One of the best thrash metal albums of all time.

@mollyesanborn LA Sexorcista was their first CD and ranks in my top 5. Has just a flow to it. Hope ya can get to it. Truly one of, if not THE, most underrated of that genre in the early 90s. When they opened for Pantera I hadn't even heard them tell i was in the pit. Even got in a speaker dive 1/2 way into their set.

So glad you got to hear this amazing metal group, that has been keeping me company from my early adulthood and last teen years. 🔥 You might have heard that the bands guitarist; always remembered, always loved Dimebag Darrel Abbott was one of the all time best guitarists , that perfected the sound of his playing by hours of practice with his brother, Vinnie Paul Abbott, the drummer. These guys will go with me to the end. Just love the heaviness in it all!!!❤️🔥✨

That 'percussive element' in This Love you mention sounds like a broom being swept across a floor....is an electronic sampled instrument called a cabasa. A cabasa is a metal cylinder with a wooden handle. Around the cylinder are strands of metal beads. One can shake it, or use their hand and push the metal beads while turning the handle of the cylinder to get that scrape/broom wooshy-sweep effect. But Vinnine (the Drummer) used an electronic sample of that sound effect. He had two electronic pads mouned on his drum kit one pad was for the electronic cabasa and the other pad trigger the wooden 'side stick' click sound effect you hear after the cabasa in This Love

I'm not sure if it was pointed out already, but on Live in a Hole one of the distortion effects used is a talk box (sometimes referred to as voice box). It's an effect that lets you control the sound of the guitar using your voice, kinda mixing them together. A famous example of its use is Living on a Prayer by Bon Jovi, where you can almost hear the guitar go "wow wow" in its verses. Awesome reaction! And what an album to start with Pantera, arguably their best but definitely check out more of them! Well earned sub from me, keep up the great work! ❤

@@mollyesanborn yes, Please check out Machine Head Molly! Start with their first album "Burn My Eyes", both Pantera and Machine Head started out similar to each other but Machine Head start going different directions once they released their 3rd album that was basically Nu Metal. Machine Head is kinda hit and miss because they went through different stylistic phases, but their hits are freaking perfect albums from start to finish. Some suggestions. You did Helmet and I think you might want to do a couple of more from them. Highly suggest Meantime and Betty if you want to continue with them. You need to do Ministry's The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste if you are liking that rabbit hole. I also suggest the band Prong. I think they are kind of underrated in their influence on Nu Metal. Prove You Wrong, Cleansing, and Rude Awakening are great albums, imo.

Live in a hole is 10000000000000000% me in a song. Full of grief I scream at the wind Thought I heard the words of others Imprison myself and stay in a shell I won't let you in to have a story to tell Things tend to drag me down Don't understand so they hate me now My fear grips the will of stone My grip fears I'll die alone I promised myself somewhere in teenage life I'd never submit to the ones I will not be like Live in a hole but stay close to my kind 'Cause they understand what burns in my mind I still feel incomplete Friends are few and far between My fear grips the will of stone My grip fears I'll die alone. In high school in the 90's I didn't really listen to rock music. It was a predominantly black high school in the inner city. One day a kid was going around selling (probably stolen) new CD's all day at school. I had turned down buying what he had earlier that day. By the end of the day he only had one CD left and he asked me if I listened to rock music and I told him "no, not really" and he said here, just take it. The CD was Pantera - Far Beyond Driven, I knew Pantera was hard shit, so I gave it a try in my car and I was like "fuck yeah!" This was the hard sound I could get into. This one CD was all of the Pantera I had and happy for it. Sound is great. It was Deftones later that I got into heavy sounds and Static-X for heavy vocals. So I recommend Far Beyond Driven for next album to check out and Static-X sometime as well.
