The record label thought they were crazy for wanting to go in the Amazon jungle with Indigenous people and write music, incorporating traditional Brazilian instruments. Much to the surprise of the record label, the album was a success and its considered a Metal classic. The vocalist/guitarist stated “We should have our own identity, why should we try to copy metal in the United States?” Sepultura is legendary in Brazil.
@timhalo7898
@timhalo7898 Жыл бұрын
The irony of that statement is that this album is a blatant band wagoning onto the nu metal sound originated in The United States by Korn. It's actually not a good representation of the real Sepultura sound. It's so obvious, they even got Jonathan Davis for lookaway. They so desperately wanted to be in the nu metal club. It's enjoyable, and the indigenous vocals and percussion give it a nice flair, but it's a weak Sepultura album. She should listen to Arise, Beneath the Remains or maybe Chaos AD (even though this was their first slide into becoming derivative of bigger American bands, in this case they were trying to be pull off a Pantera-esque groove metal sound.)

@@timhalo7898 Hey, Tim just a bit of history if you don't know... My Dad actually Mixed this album (& produced earlier Sepultura albums) Ross Robinson Produced this Record & Korn’s Debut as well as Slipknot’s. (my dad mixed IOWA) I think what you may possibly be hearing is rather more organic then you might think... Ross really is somewhat the unofficial “father” of the sound of “Nu Metal” - He didn't do it as a “trend” its sort of just how he made/makes records. This album... I would have to ask my father exactly when it was recorded but was absolutely recorded in the very immediate time frame if of Korn’s debut. Best Regards. 🤘🏻

@@Enigma9Sigma no shit dude, but you’re wrong, korn invented the new metal sound and Robinson rode that wave just like all the other hack wannabes, including Sepultura at this low point in their career. Wow your dad mixed this album? Like I give a fuck. How about developing your own credentials instead of pathetically citing your daddy’s accomplishments in a shitty attempt to be condescending

@@timhalo7898 i dont know where you guys from. but theres a band here in brazil called nação zumbi that brought a album in 1994 that influenced a lot the sepultura in the roots album. Nação sounds like a helmet/RATM band with a lot of percussion from the northeast brasil. Lúcio Maia aka jackson bandeira, the guitarrist later reccorded the fist soulfly album. besides that there is a rhythm called maracatu that theres a lot of influence in the songs Ratamahatta/breed apart and frevo rhythm in Born Stubborn and the all the capoeira thing on the attittude with the berimbau. i'm not saying that arent korn in this sound. but theres more background that everyone thinks.

@@timhalo7898 you´re completely wrong, buddy. You´re thinking about this album through the lens of United States rock/nu metal from the 1990´s. If you want to really understand "Roots" you gotta put another glasses. Check: nação zumbi, capoeira, jiu-jitsu, timbalada, xavante, maracatu, manguebeat, the enormous tradition of brazilian percussion... Glasses closer to what Natan Henrique said in a commentary here.

It's a fantastic album...no doubt. It has a lot of "nods" to Brazilian culture, and to the indigenous populations of the Amazonas. Such as: --The "Twangy string instrument" on the second track is a berimbau, which is an African instrument, which was adopted by Brazilians, used a lot in the Brazilian dance/music/martial art of Capoeira --The rythm in the start of "Breed Apart", is a typical samba/carnival rythm --Several of the tracks have Portuguese or native lyrics --Some of the track have Break Downs, that become almost entirely native Brazilian music

Went from Deftones to Sepultura's Roots. Made my day. Since this the last record of the original lineup(s) it has more nu- metal sounding, and the lead vocalist Max Cavalera is pissed and fumed with the loss of his step son Dana who was murdered. But they have a more doom/thrash black metal style in their beginnings. Still a kick ass record to listen to from front to back. And miss Molly another great reaction to Roots. Keep them coming? I HIGHLY recommend Arise and Quadra (their current album) 2 of their best, Arise being quite the staple of Thrash, Quadra being the finest of the new version of Sepultura (fronted by Derick Green since 1997) Sep's last 2 albums are very good too, their first few with Derick wern't great, but from 2011 to now, DAMN. So after this record, Max left the band and started another nu metal band called Soulfly (after the chanted word he said in the song Headup by Deftones) and their first record is also this really interesting mix of Brazilian tribal music, nu metal and thrash metal. Even Chino is featured on the song "First commandment" on that record. Also you're totally right after the turntable scratching, this record featured DJ Lethal from House of Pain and Limp Bizkit, that dude literally helped invent distorted turntablism via using a guitar amplifier and running his decks through there to try and make the turntables sound like a guitar (like a reverse Tom Morello).

Roots is definitely a Korn inspired album. Sepultura sought out Korn producer, Ross Robinson for this album, and it really shows. The track Lookaway basically being like a Nu-Metal super-group outing with Jonathan Davis, one of the pioneers of the genre, and Mike Patton of Faith No More being one of the god-fathers (though he despised Nu Metal, calling it derivative). The track even featured House of Pain and later Limp Bizkit member DJ Lethal. House of Pain could even be considered a big influence on the Nu Metal genre, as they would do early shows with bands like Helmet and Korn. It's a sound that Max Cavalera would carry with him into his next band, Soulfly. The thing that really sets it apart is the tribal vibe of the album. Again, these sounds would be explored even more with Max's next band Soulfly.

@@guinterstricker I'm not knocking the album or trying to reduce it. But you cannot deny that it was heavily inspired by that raw, stripped down sound that early Korn presented. Regardless of what the themes are, or what it's garnished with. The band themselves are going for a Korn inspired sound.
@vxrdrummer
@vxrdrummer Жыл бұрын
They wanted to sound like Korn which is what is widely accepted. They went with Ross Robinson for the 'Korn sound', but also wanted to go to Indigo Ranch where the forst two Korn records were recorded, and lets face it, many bands went with Ross and Indigo off the back of his success with Korn. I don't think those things are in anyway reducing the album by saying they were heavily influenced by what Korn sounded like. Its not a bad thing to be influenced by Korn. For me it's their best record as it has that different sort of 'Korn' sound, but is still Sepultura at its core. I think it's a bit snobby to acuse someone of reducing Sepultura, or that they don't understand by simply stating that they were influenced by Korn. Sepultura purist or not, that just isn't cricket. Anyway, if there was the Korn influence, it really helped this record to be even better and I don't think fusing influences can ever be bad unless you are intentionally ripping it off, or jumping on the bandwagon ala Machine Head with the Burning Red. Roots is still hugely Sepultura and tribal but just has aspects of another influence, or a natural change in their direction, which is allowed to happen.

All the press before the album was all about how Korn and Deftones were huge influences for the album and they had gotten Ross Robinson to produce it. When this was released was surprised the direction they went. They had experimented with bringing their cultural roots to metal and 'Kaiowas' from their previous album was a huge live favorite but didn't expect a full album or it to work so well. I don't have time to research to see if RoadRunner or someone has posted on KZfaq the companion video album that collected the video singles with interspersed discussions by the band explaining symbolism in the vids, more about their heritage, and such. It is a good watch though, imo. 'Arise' is my fave album from them. One of the few albums that I have bought 3 times (vinyl, cassette, CD). I suggest if you decide to continue to dig in with the Max albums just do thing in reverse and do 'Chaos AD' next.

The Cavalera brothers recently re-recorded Sepultura's first death/thrash metal EP & album Bestial Devastation & Morbid Visions with the Cavalera Conspiracy project (the originals were low budget and kinda sounded like Slayer bootleg tapes), so if you ever wanted to hear 80s metal with modern sound & production, they sound pretty great.

In the booklet that comes with the cd album it says that the song Istria was recorded live in the in the home of the Xanvntes tribe (a tribe from the Amazon rainforest), Aldegia Mato Grosso Brazil on the 5 of Novmenber and that Istria means roots in the Xanvntes native language and that the chant used in the track is the a healing ceremony chant used by the tribe. The booklet also says there is only one guitar playing on the song Jasco. The album cover for this album is just a picture of a member of the Xanvntes tribe which I'm guessing is to show the bands country roots (the band are Brazilian) as the album is all about the bands and there countries roots. It's some cool album art.

Another album that not only does the same but also has several special guests such as Corey Taylor and Chino Moreno is Primitive, by the band Soulfly, also created by Max Cavalera, I recommended.

I like You're many review's You are the best in KZfaq if You ask me. Why? Because You are listening to every little detail of a track. And Imho that's exactly how it should be! I❤this album the most just because that's the first album I've heard from them. I like their other stuff like "Arise" their best album 😅

Wow, thanks so much! I appreciate the kind words and am glad that you're enjoying the videos. And yes, Sepultura is an amazing band! I'll have to give Arise a listen too.

Great Albums… My Dad MIXED this album & actually Produced the earlier albums you mention above. To listen to them in sequence really shows the fantastic growth of their music & their importance in the progression of, specifically, heavy metal music. Cheers

I used to live in an apartment building with a guy named Mark. We called him Dark Mark because he always wore black and almost always a Sepultura t-shirt. He came over to my place one time to show me a Misfits video from an early community access tv show in Detriot. After that was done he showed me a video of Skrewdriver. I soon realized what they were all about and never looked at Mark the same. No comment on Sepultura but when I hear the bands name, that encounter is what I think about.

Rarely has a band made a more confident album that departs from their past material so much. This album knows exactly what it is doing from the jump, and it is so wonderfully distinct from anything I've ever heard, before or since.

For some time now I intended to recommend you listen to Chaos AD but you beat me to it with Roots, definitely check out Chaos AD, it's a bit of a middle ground between Roots and their earlier material, then listen to Arise, one of the all time great Thrash Metal albums. You'll be working backwards through three consecutive albums but get a real sense of their progression, just in reverse :)

Sepultura went to The São Marcos Indigenous Land, where a significant part of the Xavante people live, is located approximately **300 km** from the geographical region of the Amazon. The Brazilian Amazon, which is a part of the Amazon biome, has an area of approximately 3.8 million km². Here are some countries with similar sizes: **India**: 3.29 million km² **Argentina**: 2.78 million km² **Kazakhstan**: 2.72 million km² **Algeria**: 2.38 million km² **Democratic Republic of the Congo**: 2.34 million km² The Xavantes are an indigenous people who live in areas distributed within the state of Mato Grosso, in the Central West Region of Brazil. Although Mato Grosso is not located in the geographical region traditionally known as the Amazon, it is part of the so-called Legal Amazon. Therefore, it can be said that the Xavantes are in the Legal Amazon, but not in the geographical region of the Amazon. The Amazon Rainforest as a whole, which extends across nine countries, has an area of approximately 5.5 million km². Here are some countries with similar sizes: - **European Union**: 4.18 million km² - **India**: 3.29 million km² Please note that these values are approximate and may vary depending on the source.

Solid album and review. Won't lie, was kind of hanging out for a Helmet album haha. If you like this sound, I would suggest Home by Sevendust. Has that Nu-Metal bass/bounce that you appear interested in from many reviews.

This is a masterpiece! This album got me into heavy shit. Incredible stuff! Met Max in Warsaw and his sons. Amazing encounter! He gave me an electronic invitation to his Soulfly gig. It was gorgeous experience😊 By the way if you like this one you ought to listen to Soulfly “Dark Ages”. As good as Roots.

I think with Sepultura you should have started from the beginning or at least from 'Schizophrenia' (1987), since they are a band which really evolves their sound from record to record, you can really appreciate how they become better composers and musicians throughout their career. 'Beneath The Remains' from 1989 it's one of the most important Thrash Metal records ever, if not the most. One of my favourite bands ever, and I've been a metalhead 25+ years, so glad you're getting into them. Cheers from Spain Molly!

Awesome vid as usual. Lot of nu metal or its precursor type albums lately...should do some like dream theater, at the gates or bodom, strapping young lad, amorphis. Course if ya gonna stick with nu metal for a bit maybe some (hed)p.e. or coal chamber. Or candirias coma imprint comp though I've mentioned that enough at this point
