** ABOUT ME **
Hello! My name is Jay, and I am a long-time veteran of storytelling and a semi-seasoned DM! I began playing Dungeons and Dragons roughly 5 years ago and began my first ever game as the DM. I figured things out by watching online games and fumbling my way through the rules, and never looked back! I've fallen in love with TTRPG's in general and want to share my experience and thoughts with the world and community I love so much. I currently DM two separate games regularly, and continue to learn every day.

Hey everyone! I had some trepidation making another Critical Role video as there are many people who claimed I was become a 'critical role' youtuber... But I realized, I like talking about Critical Role. I love talking about characters. And ultimately... I should be able to talk about what I love, regardless of what people say about me. SO! Enjoy the Critical Role content, and expect more (and beyond Critical Role!) in the coming weeks!

Oh hell yeah. Totally nailed it. Other than his little iconic moments (: I. e kissing Caleb's forehead, the night of the tapestry, or of course his death) I really didn't like Molly. I love Tal, and felt terrible for him loss of Molly. But losing Molly was fine by me. But how the other characters honored him through the rest of the whole campaign had me in absolutely wracking sobs of terrified relief and joy during THAT scry... And during the resurrection ceremony. And the divine intervention. And of course "Love? Magician... Sea ... Joy ... Tinkerer ... Rumor". Dear God I was so happy. Then I read a great fanfic called Eight of Swords. And I realized that THAT was the version of Molly I thought I loved and missed. Someone Molly never totally got to be because of how Tal built him to be. It's a fucking amazing phenomenon. Also:. Don't stop. I love examination videos of CR Characters. Do em all. Long form. I'll be there.

One of my favourite Molly moments is when the Nein are on the road and come across a tree that was struck by lightning. After a few members of the party investigate it and find nothing, Molly decides to leave a single silver coin, for the next traveller to find and be rewarded for their curiosity I like to think it ties into his “leave every place better than you found it” philosophy 💜

I hate that Molly had to die, but I honestly think it was the best thing to happen early on in the campaign. His death really cemented the M9 as a cohesive party and it was fun to see how Molly's legacy showed up later in the campaign. I'm personally not a huge fan of Keg, but I love that Ashly went all-in with the role-play aspect of the game and I think they fit in excellently with the party.

@@ChargerBulldogs19 On top of that Bloodhunters very much a gamble class. Taliesin quite literally rolled the dice and it did not go in his favor. That's the problem with playing with a Homebrew class, sometimes the mechanics are not exactly sound, and it will fail you at crucial moments. Sure, it was reckless to challenge Lorenzo head on like that. (Yes technically it's not a Homebrew class anymore, thanks too Citical Role partnering with D&D and Wizards of the Coast to make it official, but you get what I mean. During the time he was playing it Bloodhunter was very much in the Beta phase so of course it was going to have some issues.)

The simple fact that hundreds of episodes in and the other players are still quoting Molly's lessons to them screams how impactful of a character he really was for how short we got to have him. There are so many moments in the campaign where Molly showed how much of a good person he was even when doing it in the worst way possible. Busting Nott while trying to steal from Fjord, telling her not to steal because she isn't very good at it, then clueing in Fjord after leaving Nott alone knowing that she would still attempt to steal, just to drive home the lesson, pure gold. He was trustfully untrustworthy, and in being so was the humblest person that could ever be. Having no memories of his past and knowing that he began his journey in a grave, Molly lived for life itself. Whether it be good or bad, he took it in stride. Winning the sack toss after Fjord's legendary failure, only to be awarded a simple strawberry as the prize, it might as well have been a million gold to Molly. His pointless purchase of a poorly made tapestry just because he knew it would never be bought otherwise, and his insistence on bringing it along on their journey, only for it to be his death shroud. "I've never made so much money in my life," after being given a cut of ten or so gold showed just how humble Molly was, while the others took it for pocket change.

I think one of the things about Molly that was most impactful, that's not really talked about, is how his statement of 'leaving a place better than he found it' became not only one of the driving motives of the M9, but the motto of the Critical Role Foundation, and is what drives all the good they're doing with the unexpected fame and money that's come with Critical Role.

You hit the nail on the head. The best thing I love about Critical Role is that as a group they are compassionate about helping those less fortunate, and when they unexpectedly won the lottery, instead of being selfish, they wholeheartedly found ways to help as many people, animals, and environmental issues as they could. Their selflessness is rare in this self-centered world, and their behavior is admirable.

The death of Molly didn't hit me as hard as it probably should have. But the rest of the Nein saying their goodbyes at his grave after defeating Lorenzo literally made me cry. Such amazing role-play and even if Ashley Johnson wasn't there in person, Matt describing how Yasha reacts to the news of her friends death was devastating. It feels like for a moment they stopped being people sitting together playing DnD but they were actually The Mighty Nein themselves mourning their friend, and by God they deserve an Oscar for that performance

Spoilers: You know, while yes caduceus does bring Molly back to life, I’m glad it was someone new, someone not Molly, because he didn’t have the same interactions that Molly had when he first woke up, the original Molly woke up in a shallow unmarked grave that was in the middle of nowhere, Kingsley woke up surrounded by loved ones all welcoming him, pushing him towards being Molly but accepting that no… this isn’t Molly and that this new individual deserves respect and love just as much as Molly did

Kingsley is Molly if he had his memories but kept his morals. He’s everything Lucian would’ve been had he been let into the Somnovum madness and rejected it. And that was an amazing decision on Talisen’s part
@Styxintheriver

Kingsley, Molly, and Lucien are the same nature, different nurture. Molly would have always been a liar, a manipulator, a fantastic friend, and chaotic at heart. But Lucien having the influence of the Somnovem made him evil. Molly's experience with the Circus made him ostentatious and grandiose (moreso, anyway, ego is part of their nature as well). Kingsley, though we see little of him, is clearly going to be at least a little more kind, because of the kindness he is learning from the Nien.

yes!! i remember posting a molly theory the the CR subreddit that got like 0 interaction but I feel like Molly makes a lot of sense through some of Hegel's philosophy (hence the 0 traction on the post I made). I know little about Hegel, but he said something can only be understood fully by understanding what it is *and* what it is not (and what it is yet to be, in a sense), like a bloomed flower isn't all a flower is; there's also the moment where it is a bud etc. And the whole is more than the sum of its parts. Lucien's soul had Molly in it, sure, but Molly 'wasn't' (as in "Molly didn't exist") until it was separated. And when that 'piece' of soul acquired its own experience and will, it couldn't be put together again the same way, and we saw 'Molly' gashing at Lucien's face during the final battle. But the most important part is that, even if Molly was Lucien's entire soul, just without memories, it would still make him a different person, because what makes a person someone is not a metaphysical, indescructible "token" (soul), but the fact that it lives, accumulates experience and a past and identifies itself. So, to me, before Lucien (when I thought they had the same soul), I saw Molly as the one irrecuperable DND character, because whatever they brought back would be Lucien according to the Gods' definitions, so it would come with Lucien's memories. God I'm so sorry for the rant I haven't talked about this in a long time

I agree with everything you said in the video. At first I didn't like Molly as a character because he was "too much" for me. It was only near his death and after it when he started to grow on me, and it was because above anything else, he was unapologetic. That's what I think was his biggest lesson to the M9, to be true to themselves and their values. P.D.: I also adore what he did with his "younger brother", focusing more on the legacy rather than being tied down to a previous character.

I love the "show, don't tell" method to play a character. It's actually how I'm playing my very first D&D character now. She's a living doll (homebrew race) life cleric/shepherd druid who is keeping her identity as a doll secret and desperately wants to become a real girl. Because she's a construct, she doesn't actually have any emotions of her own and instead pretends to have emotions like she's playing a part. Because she spent most of her existence watching others, she's the most observant member of the party (her passive perception is 18) and thus has quite the eye for noticing changes in behavior and picking up on details of how others express themselves to the point that she is able to immediate it. She basically selects whatever emotion appears to best suit whatever situation she's in so to best keep up the façade. Even in our very first combat I kept this up. She got first in initiative, but she's never been in a fight before so she didn't know how to best help out. She instead feigned fear and hid behind our wildfire druid who had instantly bonded with her. I admit, out of character, I honestly didn't know what to do since this was my very first time and had built my character to be the party healer, so she was kinda useless being first in initiative. Once the others started fighting and she saw how they reacted to being in a fight, my character began helping out by healing wounds. When combat ended, we found that not everyone who was caught in the attack made it out alive. My character had never seen a corpse before, so I roleplayed her being confused as to why the dead villagers weren't waking up. The other players pulled my character away and tried their best to explain to her that they were "taking a very long nap". For context, my character was believed by everyone in-character to be a young human girl, so they dote on her and treat her like a little sister. My character doesn't like talking about her past, so she tends to avoid the subject. When the wildfire druid asked my character about her past during our turn to take watch, my character explained that her "father" (creator) locked her up and never let her go out or speak to anyone. This is true, though not in the way the wildfire druid would have thought. The wildfire druid thought that my character was locked up in her room or something, when she was actually kept in a glass case and put on display in her creator's toyshop. He never let anyone take her home back when she was an ordinary doll because he made her to look exactly like his late daughter, hoping he could somehow find a way to revive her through the doll. Later, when the party was sent to find an item in a magical castle in the Fea Realm or something, we found ourselves in this room full of mirrors that could show us our memories, possible futures, or different kinds of lives we could have lived. My character found a mirror that showed her living a happy life with her father where she was allowed to go out and play and be an ordinary girl, though it was kept vague if she was still a doll or even if it was her creator's daughter succeeding in being revived in her body. I had my character react by destroying the mirror with this hollow look on her face. When questioned why she destroyed the mirror by the party, she kept the hollow expression and did not answer them. The others couldn't see what was going on in the mirrors for the others, so they had no idea what upset my character so much. However, they could tell from her reaction that it wasn't anything good and just let her be. There was also a moment right before we entered our first dungeon where the party was attacked by acid plants with pollen that could knock us out. My character was one of the few who wasn't knocked out because she has no sense of smell, thus immune to the sleeping pollen. However, she was hit by an acid attack that began to dissolve her sleeve and arm. My character was still dead set on keeping her identity a secret, so she did everything she could to not let the others see her exposed arm which had ballpoint joints. Luckily, the others managed to take down the acid plants and my character was able to stop the acid with some water she had and use Mending to repair her arms and ruined clothes. Our hexblade warlock did notice my character's odd behavior, but never saw her arm. So the hexblade warlock may currently be suspicious of my character but still does not know the truth about her. We're currently infiltrating a lab run by the BBEG organization we're against where my character's secret may finally be revealed. She may even reunite with her creator as hinted by the DM out of character. I'm VERY excited for this as I'm kinda eager to finally reveal the truth about my character to the party. We've been playing for nearly a year now and I think it's about time they learned her secret. I can't wait to see the party's reaction to my character's identity! Especially since we've been fighting an organization whose goals are to destroy all natural forms of magic and turn living beings into constructs with the belief that it will stop a greater evil. There's also the possibility that my character may actually be one of the organization's experiments. For reference, I had no idea going into the campaign that we'd be dealing with constructs so me picking to play as a type of construct was completely coincidental. When I found that out and about the organization, I asked the DM if my character might possibly have any ties to this organization. He hasn't given me a straight answer about it, but it's looking like my character may actually be part of the organization somehow. It'll be a fun twist for everyone if that's true!

@@lookhazz1435 They already know out-of-character. Our character sheets aren't hidden from each other and I didn't get the chance to make a fake character sheet to be used before everyone saw. Oh, well. No one has broken in-character about having knowledge of my character's true identity, so it's all good. I have been dropping hints to my character's true identity throughout the campaign. The first time being when our aasimar paladin helped my character get into the wagon we got and I pointed out that she's much lighter than he expected her to be, though the aasimar paladin took this simply as a sign that they're stronger than they expected to be. He's a bit of himbo and we love it. Another hint was when my character got hit with acid and her arm started to melt but kept it hidden as best she could until she could wash the acid off, only one character noticed my character acting odd. She never asked my character about her odd behavior, however, as we were a bit busy with the dungeon and didn't think too much of it. Later, when we were infiltrating one of the warehouses run by the BBEG organization that specialized in constructs, our human paladin and aasimar paladin pretended to be guards delivering goods while the rest of the party hid in boxes. I had my character sit outside one of the boxes and "pretend" to be a doll since she really did look the part. The two paladins found her "acting" to be creepily convincing but just thought she was a surprisingly good actress. Yeah, it's kinda an open secret that most of the party is made up of idiots while mine is ironically the most sensible of us. We love that about our party. I'm really excited to see how everyone will react to my character's secret finally being revealed. I wonder if anyone will have been secretly suspecting my character as being a construct and shout out "I KNEW IT!!!" once my secret is revealed. I'd laugh if they meant it seriously or in a joking manner.

It made them all guarded and struggled to trust one another. I liked Mollymauk because he liked breaking down other people’s guard with his brashness and charm. He knew that people all yearn to be accepted despite their fear of being misunderstood, and he knew that he could manipulate that for the benefit of everyone involved. His death meant something to all of the mighty nein because he taught them that it’s okay to yearn for acceptance from others and that it’s good for everyone involved to be accepting of others. He helped them become a family and in a way his loss made them realize that even without him, They still wanted to be a family

Now it is at this point very obvious that Tal loves his gamble mechanics, high risk high reward. Be it Percy, Molly or Ashton. But i think Matt gravely underestimated Talesins willingness to roll that dice so to speak. Now one thing that will always stick with me is the the look of resignation on his face as the ritual fails and he knows it now falls to him. That he now has to make the decision. He did not want Molly back, but the group needed closure and much like how one dice sealed Mollys fate... A single dice unsealed it. Now this could all have been planned at that point, that is the issue with actors... You never really know. But i really think that the gambler in Talesin was unable to resist tat final roll, to let the gods of chaos decide. No longer making it his decision. But ofc being the little chaos goblin that he is... He did ofc monkey paw the situation with Kingsley. Now i will maintain that part of what makes Molly so great is that we got juuuuust about enough, but not too much. Like Firefly. To me Ashton is a more balanced Molly, he has many of the same traits but has way more substance. Although i would have loved to see how the third act of C2 would have panned out with Molly alive... .. . But given the mechanics of the Blooodhunter at the time, Talesin would have managed to kill Molly sooner or later anyway in my humble opinion.

I don't normally leave comments but I needed to with this video. You are an AMAZING analyst and entertainer and you made me tear up with the Nott video, but this one broke me into a full sobbing mess. I am so grateful we got go see Mollymauk and also that he was a character at a table that truly knows how to handle characters properly, since other players/DM could have handled this horribly or just... not as meaningful. I must admit the start of this video sparked so much memories of my previous D&D character. Not being able to remember his roots, being extremely unapologetic, pissing ppl off for fun or even indirectly, knowing more about ppl than they know about him... I never thought of it this way! It made me extremely happy yet also extremely sad since my character does end up in sort of a corruption arc... But! Sad nonsense aside, thanks again for doing this, for understanding the important parts and for reminding us the amazing motto Molly left behind. Even bigger than that "Long may I reign", it's the "leave a place better than it was". Thanks again and excuse if the readability of this text is a bit weird, I am non-native speaker and sometimes English HARD you know? Anyway, lots of love from sunny Spain to my fav D&D youtuber!

Also i feel like that event+ Cad integration of the team were the push the team needed to *begin* a more heroic path, keyword on begin since....welp the whole boat incident after, but yeah, i do think the fact that "...left things better than when they found it" became one if not the main motto of the team, say a lot of how impactful this moment was.. and heck you can se Beou Character as a micro example of that impact, her whole speech afterwards was basically her saying outload what she felt was mollys biggest qualities as a person but also what she would try to aim at going foward

I enjoyed Molly, he was probably my favorite next to Caleb around the time. He was always himself even though he didn’t know who he was. He had a big impact on the party throughout the whole campaign. I’m about to get to the end of the campaign only have a couple more left but it’s just amazing how his death showed that they are valuable, how they have been over their heads and haven’t really been acting like a real team and became a family after his death. Beau was my least favorite character I just found them unlikable and it’s no fault to Marisha that was just her character but they grew and changed and now I like them a lot more than I used to. Can’t wait to see how it all ends

I hadn't heard about Critical Role, when KZfaq recommended the first episode of Campaign 2. I fell in love immediately with the show, the cast and, especially Molly and Taliesin. I think of Molly more as a storyteller than a liar. His stories weren't usually for personal game or to hurt anyone. They just made everyone's life more exciting. He did it for fun. That makes a difference. SPOILERS I can't wait for the upcoming two- part special with The Mighty Nein to see more of who Molly has become as Kingsley.

I like to think that the campaign until Molly's death as a prologue. The Might Nein didn't really fully trusted each other and aren't really close, but after this episode they started to really understand what means being in a group and really starting to get closer. Campaign 2 was totally molded around the Molly's death and it changed everything from that points onward

As one who will never be able to watch that episode again, thank you for the beautifully stated reasons/actions that led to Molly's demise. I fully embraced that character from the start as I had, right before the start of campaign 2, very abrupt changes in my life and basically didn't know who I was anymore or where I belonged. Molly helped me to embrace my weirdness and see where it led. I'm still on that journey, but I know that the path I'm on now was smoothed by Molly and I'm all the better for it.

I have a character everyone assumed was going to be a joke character: full blooded orc raised by gnomes. Funny right? Well he is funny, but I've used show don't tell to make him a tragic emotionally deep character that combines the determination, strength, and courage of the orc with the wit, creativity, and humor of the gnomes. Add in that a level of devotion and loyalty at the height unseen in either race and you get the scariest heroic mad scientist you've ever seen. -The woods are lovely dark and deep, But I've got miles to go before I sleep.

Though I'm part of the minority of people who didn't ever get attached to Molly, I have to say that what made me appreciate Molly more was Mercer's portrayal of Lucien. Made me miss the simplistic vibe Taliesin was going with them. Unfortunately I also don't really like Percy, maybe just not into Tal's style of RPing sometimes I guess, but Molly has slowly become something I cherish when re-watching old episodes. Seems like Tal lets himself just vibe more. And actually, I've been really enjoying their portrayal of Ashton from C3! Was a bit rocky for me (haha) but he found a great footing.

Watching this really made me proud of my current character, I created her before even starting to watch critical roll yet she has a lot of similarities to Molly, she remembers her past (well most of it at least some stuff in our story have changed that with finding out some backstory that my Dm created for my character to surprise us) but doesn’t care about, she holds no value in the past, she’s just living in the moment. She holds her values and time isn’t gonna affect them, she’s undeniably proud of who she is, she takes all the attention when walking in a room, which has been fucking fantastic in our campaign since it draws the attention away from the other party members when they need to be sneaky (and she’s a multi class started as bard now has 2 rouge levels and soon 3 so I’m very hyped about that, sooo she can be sneaky on her own but the other party members can’t, so she’s the perfect distraction) Oh god I could keep writing for hours about this character, one fun fact, she has advantage(the advantage is from an item I got in the campaign) and a +10 in insight, so passive is 17, she basically can’t be lied to, which also makes her extremely trusting, as she’ll know when u lie, but if you play it cool at first she’s gonna believe you no matter what. This was a fun lil character beat and a way to make her not be to op with insight, so characters can still get away with it, but first they have to get to know her, cuz once she trusts them. She trusts them implicitly, which has made a lot of hilarious moments. I truly love this character and she has definitely made me wanna be more proud of who I am, every game I feel like I gain something, from being in her shoes for even just a couple hours once in a while

I'm surprised to see so much terminology calling Molly abrasive and "an asshole" and such. Personally I always saw him more as a Robin Hood type--he stresses to others to "not steal from happy people", he tips way better than anyone else (even slipping coin into the pockets of people who bought him a drink) and he seemed to have a much deeper moral compass than anyone else on the team. Just because he's ostentatious and visually loud doesn't make him an asshole? He's nonchalant.

Spoilers for the ENTIRETY OF CAMPAIGN 2 in this comment! Without Molly’s death, we wouldn’t have cadeuceus. we wouldn’t have fjord as a paladin wielding a vestige (the only vestige in the M9), and would have followed Uk’otoa (Uk’otoaaaaa). We wouldn’t have the cohesiveness and bonding that the party had lacked, and the togetherness that came from it. Caleb and Beau, in the absence of Jester, Yasha, and Fjord, cemented their friendship and leaned on one another. I feel like without Molly’s death, Caleb would have still went back in time to save his family. I also feel like they wouldn’t have stuck with Essek; they would have sold him out for betraying the Dynasty. Good people sometimes do bad things, but that doesn’t mean they’re lost. Without Molly’s death, the Mighty Nein wouldn’t have ended with “Nein” people, and I think it’s almost fitting that, all those years ago, the players (and characters) almost prophesied their end through a simple German (Zemnien) joke. Molly, and by proxy Taliesin, show us what it means to not only stick with ourselves and our choices, but they also show us that even though someone may be gone physically from our lives, they can continue to impact us in ways we couldn’t even think of. Mollymauk, Kingsley, and even Lucien, are 3 of my favorite characters to come out of Critical Role, and I’m so happy I went back and finished the second campaign. Thank you for reading my ramblings, I love you very much. Goodnight. :’)

I've been playing with the same group for three years now and my first charector died at session 2 and I just laughed. Second charector lived untill session.... 120-ish... he trained a young half-orc who became my next charector who looked up to him as a father and he lived through the end of that homebrewed campaign. Right now we're playing Tomb of Horror as we're waiting for our DM's next homebrewed campaign and I'm a old dwarf who's out for one last adventure with a enchanted maul named after his dead wife. We've had two charector deaths but it doesn't seem like it's his time just yet. I always take the charector deaths as a great part of the story and if the players are good they will react to it. I'm so glad that I've found a party who also sees this and in the last campaign we would still bring up our fallen charectors here and now in conversations. Molly made one heck of an impact on the rest of the group and his death made them better. Cas were also one of my favorites so all hail Tal. He indeed leaves the world a little bit better than he found it.

Have to say, thank you for sprinkling in some they/them when referring to Molly. It’s a small gesture but it really does mean a lot to many folks 💜 A fan-made animation of Molly was the reason I discovered and got into Critical role in the first place. The entire cast and show has played a large role in my life (and discovering that I didn’t fully identify with the sex I was assigned at birth). And hearing someone refer to Molly with he/they makes me feel so happy. Thank you for this incredible video essay. I’m excited to see whatever content you make next!

you've explained a lot why I disliked molly so much in the early eps. I thought that he was a total egotist who claimed that he made the world a better place without any evidence to back that up. and what seemed to happen is that the vast majority of Critters claimed that they adored molly without any reason apart from "I don't give a toss". for a long time I thought Critters only loved molly because they wanted to be completely free like molly claimed to be. you're absolutely right that Taliesin's choices inspired the other players and what Matt did with Lucien. it enabled the whole M9 story and that's a huge contribution to the whole CR concept and story of the brand. thanks for this.

So, I have to say I do enjoy the CR analysis, but the way you talk is very circular and you end up repeating things, like a lot. Trying to be constructive here, I think it might help to set up your statement, then provide a clip or other evidence, then analyze it, reiterate by rewording and not saying the exact same thing, and moving on, rather than talking in circles without providing the viewer much Like, I recognize a lot of the moments you were talking about from CR, but not all of them, and not everyone may have watched those moments either, so making assertions about them without showing it visually or directly quoting the characters makes it seem like you're just throwing your opinion without really supporting it Granted this is purely from the CR videos but I still figure it might help, I'm not an expert or anything, just speaking my mind
