Durian is one of those “love it or hate it” fruit. Durian lovers will go to great lengths to buy them here in Singapore, and they are pricey. These days they have many different species and durian aficionados will seek out the best and pay top dollars to buy these. The common species are getting less popular because consumers don’t want to be seen as “someone who doesn’t know how to appreciate great stuff”…..quite similar to wine, if I have to find a comparison. I am not a fan of durian, I’ll eat them if they’re on the table in front of me, but I wouldn’t buy them. But I know of fans who cannot resist whenever they pass a durian stall, and are prepared to stand on the street side and enjoy the durian. 🤔

Not a fan of Durian myself even when i'm from Malaysia. Grew up with it and had plenty during the holidays when i was staying with me grandpa back when I was a wee lad. Literally could just walk to the backyard where grandpa had at least 30 trees and I could pick one up from the safety net (the one protecting the durian from hitting the ground after the fruit drops from the tree. Yes, Malaysian durian are considered more exotic because we do not pluck the fruit off the tree like Thailand does. You should try our variety as the taste (savory) can overpower the stink. The ones in China are most probably the Thai Monthong variety so many do reject durian altogether after tasting that. You need to try Malaysian durian to see if you actually hate it or can learn to appreciate it. Yes, sounds like i'm promoting my country's product but I've had many foreigners swear the change of heart after trying our best stuff. D24, red crab, XO, Musang King, Black Thorn etc.
