John Strand runs a successful security company, and one day his mom wanted to try her hand at penetration testing for a new client -- a local prison facility. Against his better judgement, he let her do it. That's where her experience in food service paid off big time.

I remember our high school took us to a prison before it was officially operational and housing inmates. I’ll never forget one of our teachers saying to the deputies that most of us would end up there eventually so we might as well get a good look at it now. As we were touring, someone found spent 9 mm casing in one of the stairwells. The deputies freaked out and confiscated it immediately…. Good times.

@@THEMAX00000 you realize in part that your neighborhood looks like that because of the privatization of prisons right? They have bed counts. Those beds need numbers. If the beds aren't filled - that's money lost. That's why you've got lots of young men, particularly young black men that have zero father figure at home - weve incentivized throwing people in cages. Not because we care about crime, not for some great moral reason - but because someone, somewhere, needed another 27$ a day (your rate of value will vary state to state). Growing up fatherless in turn makes you statistically far more likely to end up in a prison yourself. It's a system that feeds itself and shts out broken people more likely, not less to end up back there sooner rather then later. I'm sorry your neighborhood sucks man. It's not fair. Mine isn't the nicest either and I do get it. I understand despising gangs and a culture that promotes violence and stupidity. But you've also gotta ask yourself where all that started ... and it started with prisons and failed education.

@@brandonm.4966 I am blessed to have had it happen during a time in my life that I am mentally sturdy. More so than when I was younger. Same pain no matter what. I had to lean on my wife at times. It was a big reminder that time always ticks. It lit a fire under me to start the things I kept putting off and to be a better person for the people around me. I accepted love, which was the important thing. Without it I would have sunk into a major depression. I still am processing. I don't think it completely goes away so accepting that gives some relief. I allowed myself time to fully grieve. I took hikes alone. I prayed for love over her soul and for our family. I wasn't a religious man at the time, but it helped more than I expected. Allowing the space. It was and still is hard, but it gets easier with time. Just remember to stay towards light and love. Be strong for your family. Be someone they can rely on during that time. I hope this helps you, or anyone that needs to read the message. God bless!

What a brilliant episode, had me laughing hard in places as well as teared up at the end. I had images of my own Mom (who was a high school 'dinner lady' here in the UK) doing this kind of crazy stuff, so poignant that she nearly died of sepsis during chemotherapy in 2016. His Mom sounds like a superhero herself. Always be grateful for the amazing people in your life, life is short.
