Thousands of quarries exist across the country but some can be disastrous. Jonathan Baksh, 19, jumped into Martin's Creek quarry in Pennsylvania in 2015, but he never made it back to land after suffering a cramp in the water. His mom was stunned when she found out her son was the second young man to die in quarry that year. Now, as the one year anniversary of her son's passing arrives next month, she's on a crusade to tell the world about the dangers of swimming in quarries. #InsideEdition

Not very good reporting. They didn't even explain what the actual danger was with the kid who died after coming up three times for help. Was it a sudden drop off in the depth? Was there some type of undercurrent? Other than stating that the water gets cold, and could get deep - neither of which was offered as the explanation for the kid's death - I didn't see what the point of the story was.

Also, quite a number of quarry lakes can be toxic as well. Remember, some of these ponds can contain arsenic, fertilizers, and toxic poisons which is something you don't want to jump into.

Even more common is the silky sediment that changes the waters density and as a result makes you less buoyant. It also increases the resistance meaning you need a lot more energy and strength to swim in it. I'm not sure why this isn't mentioned as it's a really common danger and a HIDDEN danger.

Underwater streams/rivers can produce an undertow that pulls you under, no matter how strong. You can hit a patch of cold water and lose feeling in your limbs. Something on the bottom could be leaching toxic fumes that make you faint - it's an old mining pit, who knows what's under there?

1) Don't dive from such a high elevation. Jump in straight like a pencil, feet first, legs closed, and butt cheeks clenched. 2) Beware of rocks when jumping into the water. 3) Don't swim long distances if you aren't a really strong swimmer. 4) If you get a cramp, just relax and float on your back until it's gone. The quicker you breathe in/out and tense up, the faster you will sink. 5) Stretch beforehand and stay hydrated. Otherwise there is a high possibility of getting a cramp. 6) Don't go swimming while high or drunk. 7) Have at least one strong swimmer in the group that can save you. 8) have at least one person in the group trained in CPR. 9) Use common sense. Follow most/all of these rules and you should be safe.

Rivers can have random spots where the water is going downwards so hard and fast that things that will normally float will be sucked under and held under from the force and that's the cause of most drownings because its impossible to get out of that situation without a rope cause it's like trying to swim through air while being pulled down with extreme force

You can't save a body you can't find. That waters hard to see in. If they had to jump in then look for him that's too much time past. Drowning takes minutes. Life vest should be worn in open bodies of water. No-one is a superhero they could be right beside you and try to save you and still may not be able to.

So how is this any different than going swimming at a lake?? Temperature inversions don’t differ just because it’s a quarry, the water temperature is going to drop after a couple feet of depth in a lake as well. Lakes get deeper unexpectedly, it’s an over-reach to deem a quarry unsafe. If you swim out from shore on a lake it’s no less dangerous if you don’t know your own swimming abilities and you should always consider swimming with someone close by.

+John Escobedo Typically you swim and if it is deep enough then it is safe. There is also a technique cliff divers use so that they won't land straight on thee ground. Let's say you do a triple backflip off of a 70 foot cliff. The water is around 100 feet. That is a bit sketchy but as soon as you hit the water you would kind of do a J shape with your body so that you wouldn't go straight down. You would like of curve off a bit. It's hard to explain but you could look up cliff diving tutorials or whatever to understand better.

when i was a kid me and a couple of friends where swimming in a lake, and we had life rafts on, i jumped off the island and went into the water, and fell into deep water, and was having trouble coming back up, it it wasn't for the life vest, pulling me up i might have drowned.

I loved the part of the video where they told us why swimming across the quarry is so dangerous.

@@zanecosgrove4820 What I think they meant to say was that someone who was in the same graduating class (same grade) as them died doing this a week before their actual graduation.

@Cedrick Sean C. Cruƶ No, just "the dangers of swimming". The quarry had literally nothing to do with his death. He had a cramp and drowned. What, do you think any random lake just magically pushes you up to the surface again if you get a cramp and go down?

It wasn't a quarry but i was in Gran Canaria once and i was walking into the ocean at the local beach (the Ocean was the Atlantic here) but they didn't put drop signs up and one minute you were walking and next minute you just dropped into extreme depth like that lady did. That just gave me flashbacks of that time back in the 00s
