The heir to the throne delivered a speech at the British Ambassador's residence in the country's capital, speaking part of the address in their native tongue. Charles made reference to his new grandson as he spoke of how he hopes the bond between Britain and Germany will remain close in a nod to Britain's departure from the EU. Addressing a crowd at an event at the British Ambassador's residence to celebrate the Queen's birthday, he said in German: 'It is also a particular pleasure to be back in Berlin once again - especially as the grandfather of a brand new grandson.' Also in German he added: 'Today, we are much more than just neighbors. We are friends and natural partners. 'Entwined by mutual experiences, mutual interests and mutual values and our futures are deeply entwined.' Prince Charles is not fluent in German, although his father, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, is said to be proficient in the language.

@@gordonsmith8899 I’m talking about culture, not nationality. It is clear that German culture was prevalent in Elizabeth and Philip’s royal circles. Elizabeth’s uncle was a Nazi sympathizer and Philip had Nazi sisters. And Victoria wasn’t so very long ago. The Saxe-Coburg-Gotha name stayed until 1917, and she and Albert spoke German with their children. Prussian/German nationalism survived in Royal circles all the way until Philip and Elizabeth, so culturally the British Royal family has been quite German until very recently. Charles was perhaps the first to have close to zero interaction with german affinities in the family.

(That being said, not every Bavarian actually has a heavy accent. Especially in urban areas, most Bavarians tend to speak pretty passable Standard German.) There are also a lot of cultural differences between different parts of Germany and Bavaria tends to be what I would call overly proud of its own cultural identity (that includes lederhosen, dirndl, wheat beer, weisswurst and a relatively conservative socio-political attitude steeped in Catholocism) which is another reason why people like to make jokes about Bavarian secession and the like.

So true. I am American and roughly half German, half English. Pennsylvania was well known for being heavily German. Though founded by Welsh Quakers. I am proud of the British royals' German component, From the Hanoverians, (who brought the Christmas Tree and Saint Nicholaus, all through the Georges finally to Victoria, who found a great Baverian, Albert of the Haus Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha. Victoria and Albert usually communicated in German. Mary of Tech taught her children German and wanted them to be proud of their German roots. Mary's son Edward VIII thus was fluent in German, and when he was with Hitler, trying to avert war, he spoke with him in German. Prince Phillip is a descendant of the Danish-German house of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glucksburg, and was also fluent in German. His four older sisters married Germans.

Nah, Prince Charles doesn't really speak German. He was just reading out a few prepared sentences in the language so as to be polite, seeing that he was guest of honour at this function in Berlin. It's pretty that obvious he is unaccustomed to the language and was struggling slightly. By contrast the late Prince Philip, Prince Charle's father, actually could speak German very fluently - there is old footage of his giving televised interviews in the language! (In fact he was highly fluent in French too.)

As a monarchist, I think the Royal family need to be careful not to engage to much in heated debate, especially around Breixit. Any tinkering with the monarchy might spell the end and force the UK into a republic.

@Kandy Kandy 'STOP TALKING KNOW NOTHING CRAP' what sort of English is that Sir? Actually, the Prince of Wales has in the past been very vocal on certain issues, especially about conservation and planning law for one example. I agree that the Royal family are not allowed to get mixed up in politics, but we're not in normal times. The majority of Mps who are supposed to represent us have turned on the electorate in not delivering our departure from the EU. We are essentially at present in a dictatorship. When one of the greatest democratic nations turn their backs on democracy and one of its elite s such has the P of Wales wades in about some special connection with Germany, who are the architects of the EU, then it spells disaster. I think it would be wise for Charles to keep out of things at present.

@Kandy Kandy As I mentioned before, this country is not in normal times. This country is in a period of instability and any words, or as in this case, actions, that reinforce a relationship with any country, that has been instrumental in trying to keep us in a EU super-state, must be treated with great care. He would serve the country better really, by trying to connect the nation with democratic values. We know the German state is instrumental in trying to keep the country in the EU against its democratic will. Why do you feel the need to write in capital letters, just press the caps lock on you keyboard and just put the capital letters in the right place - job done.

Even "Mountbatten" was an artificial translation of the German "Battenberg". When that became too well-known, the label "Windsor" was - again artificially - created. The English (= Anglo-Saxon = Angel-Sachsen) nation and their Royal family may like it or not - they are so German as one can possibly be. Yes, there are also some - minor - Celtic and North Germanic roots (as have the Germans themselves, by the way), but that does not change that big fact. It was a tragedy that war destroyed the old, strong ties between Germany and England, because if they had joined forces, there could have potentially evolved something like the United Germanic States, including also Scandinavia, the Netherlands, Benelux, Switzerland and Austria: an unbelievably advanced superpower. That would have been far better than seeing nowadays all of these originally Germanic little nations degenerating into dumb and dull rainbow areas which lose their culture to foreign invaders.

Prince Charles carries out the Monarchy's role well. The UK's Government is currently unstable and unable to implement any policies (until the Prime Minister changes and a new one rebuilds a working Cabinet); but the continuity of the state is maintained by the Queen and the Prince. The Foreign Office provided him with the right words to convey this and to remind us that after Brexit life will continue as will the British-German relationship. Aside from his native language, he can speak at least Welsh and German--although his accent and pronunciation in German is not flawless. Can any Welsh-speaker tell me how well he can speak Welsh? (I know that he had to learn it in order to become "The Prince of Wales," but am curious to know if he's retained that language to this day.)

The current royals are not German. They have German ancestry, yes, like most European royals. But there hasn't been a German king since George II. George III and IV were British with German ancestry. King William too. Queen Victoria had a British dad and German mum. German husband. Then her kids and grandsons were therefore British with German blood. It's pointless: every European royal family is mixed. Dig into any royal blood line: they're all British, French, German, etc really.

@@lizzy1974 Lizzie, nationality is not transferred through blood over decades. Names can be changed by deed poll - the name of the dynasty was changed by an Act of Parliament. The children of immigrants who are born here are British by birth. OK - you don't care for or respect the Royal Family but throwing insults doesn't change the fact: The Royal Family is British. ps: Parasites? You can post that comment confident that you'll not be hauled out of your bed at half-past-three tomorrow morning by representatives of 'the law.' As a matter of historical fact, that sort of treatment has only been dished out in my lifetime to citizens in a number of European republics.
