Local legend Bob Akerman (1912 - 2008) recalls his family history, which dates back to 1864, when his great grandfather Joseph Akerman pioneered land on Salt Spring Island. In intimate interviews interspersed with archival photos, Bob shares his memories of Salt Spring's early days and his childhood growing up in the Fulford/Burgoyne Valley. Bob recounts stories told to him by his grandmother, Mary Ann Gyves, pictured in the start screen thumbnail as a young woman next to Irishman\pioneer, Mike Gyves, whom she married. Tuwahwiye, her Cowichan name, was born and raised at Burgoyne Bay and was a renowned midwife and healer. She imparted to Bob her Cowichan Indian knowledge, traditions and remarkable experiences. At his log cabin museum, Bob shows us his extensive collection of Indian artifacts and archival photos that pay homage to his First Nations heritage. He also gives us a tour of his wife Molly's amazing collection of about 1000 vintage dolls, many from the turn of the century. The video closes with a musical collage of Bob's family photos.
With gratitude to Bob for sharing his life and adventures and reminding us of the importance of history, community and family. Courtesy of the archives of Salt Spring Island filmmaker and musician, Peter Prince: peterprince.ca/ Please share and subscribe.
