More experiments with wonderful Japanese method of turning paper into a material which can be stitched like fabric - this time I'm using the authentic Konnyaku or Konjac paste, to find out if it's better than the handcream method I tried before.

Fascinating to see you using Konjac powder - I’ve eaten konjac noodles before (you have to add lots of flavour as they don’t really have any). I’ll have to keep an eye out for the powder as I didn’t love the way the papers went when I tried with oil or hand cream previously. Cheers, Christine

That's interesting, are they like those other really low carb noodles, can't remember the name but I've seen them on amazon, bit pricey though. Might try a couple of the local Asian supermarkets, see if they have it cheaper. I wonder if I could send you a tiny bag of it to test Christine, I mean you only need a teaspoonful really - or would that maybe cause problems in the post cos it's food, or looks like a dodgy substance?! :)

Thank you very much Liz, yes I'm quite good at putting stuff that hasn't worked in the bin, I've had lots of practice at it! Glad you found it interesting, I really enjoyed doing it and have quite a lot of scrapbooking paper left to play with, also want to try some vintage book pages, I think they could be fun. The bird turned out really cool in the end, I've showed it in hte week two catch up vid I made yesterday if you're interested to see it. Thanks for the reminder not to stress about catching up, I really appreciate your understanding xo

Thankyou for the info, I love finding out that kind of thing - don't you wonder sometimes how people first discovered things like this? Cassava root is another one I've wondered about - how on earth did people discover the process that removes the toxins to render it edible?? Fascinating stuff :)

Cool to see your experiments! How fun. I love how your bird is coming out. I made faux leather recently, and I'd like to try stitching through it!

Thank you Marcy, I'm glad you enjoyed it - the bird came out cool in the end, I showed it in yesterday's catch-up if you're interested to see it. Oooh fauz leather sounds wonderful, I made some with toilet roll tubes years ago! Did you do a vid making yours? I bet it would stitch well, although you may have to make holes with an awl or something before stitching?? :)

I made my leather out of a brown paper bag, so I think it should be easy to stitch through. I have more of it and needed ideas on what to do with it, so the stitching really inspired me. Thanks for checking out my video! I'll check out your finished bird. 😃@@artyfartyannie

Wow we only used a 1/4 tsp for a half a cup water stirred for 30 minutes!
@artyfartyannie
@artyfartyannie 4 ай бұрын
ooops maybe I used a bit much then Pat! Watching this back, looks like about 1/2 tsp went in to a 1/2 cup - but in the end it still seemed to work fine and I didn't have to stir for so long :) What did you do with yours and what papers did you use?

Oooooo those look nice, more ideas for my scrap book. I used to crumple paper as a kid to get a soft texture then draw maps. I was waiting for you to do a taste test, Nice on toast?

hehe don't fancy it on toast no, but I did the sniff test and then licked it, tasted of nothing at all really! I'm going to try some vintage book pages next, watch this space :)

Wow, very interested in trying so of course google to the rescue to find supplies and I've found that the ingredient is banned in Australia for the following reason but you can still purchase it so that's rather odd lol Glucomannan, which is konjac root fiber, is used as a thickening agent in certain foods. Although allowed in noodles in Australia, it was banned as a supplement in 1986 because of its potential to be a choking hazard and block the stomach. Mini-cup jelly containing konjac is also banned in Australia

wow! that's very interesting Lesley - I can kinda see why, as it does thicken up a lot and pretty quickly, makes me wonder if it's been misused as a slimming aid or something, wouldn't surprise me. I guess if it's already in noodles it's harmless. I can understand a warning would be a good idea, but it's a shame that you can't get it at all, how frustrating!

I think it was 1/4 teaspoon in 1/2 cup of water in the video that you watched.
@artyfartyannie

Yes I think I used a bit too much didn't I?! Still it worked, and it was quicker than the video. Since I made it, the paper has retained a lovely texture, so I'm very happy with it, but haven't actually used it yet. Might have another go soon.

Could you use cornstarch??
@artyfartyannie
@artyfartyannie 4 ай бұрын
Might be worth a try, although apparently this stuff has much greater thickening properties, so I don't know. Definitely worth trying though, as you'd only be using cornstarch and some paper so nothing much to lose and it may work really well - please do let me know if you try it :)
