CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Joan (Faye Dunaway) beats little Christina (Mara Hobel) in a swimming race and then rubs it in.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
When her adoptive mother Joan Crawford died in 1977, erstwhile actress/author Christina Crawford and her brother Christopher were left out of Joan Crawford's will, "for reasons which are well known to them." Industryites have suggested that it may have been this posthumous act of rejection rather than an alleged lifetime of parental abuse that inspired Christina Crawford to pen her scathing autobiography Mommie Dearest. The 1981 film version of this tome was evidently meant to be taken seriously, but the operatic direction by Frank Perry and the over-the-top portrayal of Joan Crawford by Faye Dunaway (whose makeup is remarkable) has always seemed to inspire loud laughter whenever and where-ever the film is shown. According to the film (and the book that preceded it), Joan Crawford was a licentious, child-beating behemoth, who stalked and postured through life as though it was one of her own pictures-more Strait-jacket than Mildred Pierce. This is the film with the notorious "wire coat hanger" scene, just in case you need a reminder. Surprisingly, one emerges from Mommie Dearest with more sympathy for the monstrous but intensely vulnerable Crawford than for her whining daughter (played as an adult by Diana Scarwid, and as a child by Mara Hobel). Our favorite scene: Joan Crawford dazedly replacing her ailing daughter in the cast of a daytime TV soap opera.

Seriously, everyone here is saying Christina was a little brat, but what about the big brat acting like she's hot shit because she beat a child in a swimming race and then throwing an over the top tantrum when her child sasses her? This isn't a woman disciplining her child in a way that is proportionate to the child's misdeed, this is a mentally unstable woman losing her shit because her ego is so damn fragile. People today either beat the shit out of their child for just blinking funny while others wouldn't smack their child even if it held up a liqour store and was trafficking human organs and cocaine. There's a happy medium. Joan's reaction is completely out of proportion with Christina's sassmouth, and she was actually being a complete brat to her child.... where do you think the child got it from? How can you expect your child to model behaviours that you don't yourself do? Poor sportsmanship and passive aggressive gloating are not behaviours you want your son or daughter to be modelling.

This might explain why she loved dogs. Dogs are ideal for narcissists, they always love you, and they can be trained. People are not so easy. Maybe Joan had good intensions, the thing about not wanted her daughter to be a spoiled Hollywood brat, but in the end, she went too far and Christina paid the price.

This was the turning point in the relationship between Joan and Christina. Christina demonstrated a very assertive and strong-willed personality in this scene, one that would not placate to the insecurities of her mother. Joan wanted people around her that would be more passive who would make her feel special and in control. The relationship deteriorated from this point forward. The other children had more submissive personalities and therefore did not experience the mother's abuse.

I was so proud of Christina for standing up to her mother like this here. She was not afraid to call her out on her BS at all. Joan could not handle this at all since she wanted full control over Christina, but Christina’s strong-willed personality proved otherwise. Therefore, Christina endured a lot more harshness and abuse from Joan for this reason.

Yeah, the thing is with discipline, you have to make your reaction proportionate to what the child has done. Joan went so EXTRA and was being a pretty bad winner to her daughter. It's like oh you beat a child in a swimming race, that's such a thing to act like your shit don't stink over. If you respond this way every time your child sasses you or has a bit of attitude, you'll end up tired and hoarse voiced, and your child will be a neurotic mess.

Nothing Crawford did in this scene was child abuse. In some aspects, given how things were done back then, that little girl was lucky she did not get her face slapped so hard she fell back into the pool. Children were not allowed to speak as she did, or even throw shade as she did. Respecting parents then, unlike today, was not an option.
@politicaltwinkie2370
@politicaltwinkie2370 5 жыл бұрын
Gregory Smith, I greatly believe you in regards to abuse can happen to any child, rich or poor. But regarding Joan's behavior I would note a few things. Her daughter wrote the book because Joan did not leave her anything. During that time, that really is how people talked. Whooping were not only common but expected though Joan went way too far. Joan had her own mental health issues. In the movie, Christina did things that would have, during that time, get a kid spanking, a hard one. That rolling eyes, and talking back crap kids do these days, did not work back then. No matter how hard a parent tries, no matter their love or inability to show it, all kids, ALL kids have to deal with some issues in the adult years that they suffered as a child. What would be considered abuse now, was acceptable then. In judging Crawford people tend to forego the era of her times.
@politicaltwinkie2370
@politicaltwinkie2370 5 жыл бұрын
Gregory Smith, I hear what you are saying and in some aspects I agree with you but overall I stand by my position. Joan Crawford was faced with hellish odds. I suspect she had some mental issues. She was a woman who seek power in a country molded to accommodate only white men. She wanted children when societal rules were against her. The guts it had to take to sit at the table of Pepsi board of directors I believe came from all her life experiences. In part I believe Joan raised her kids based on the influences of how she was raised. Forcing Christina to give away most of her gifts, I don't agree with it but I understand it. I think she meant well. I really do. Christina got what she wanted. Revenge. For evermore the world will judge Joan as harsh as Christina's hate for her mother. But I won't.

Joan Crawford remembers that when Christina was very young, mother and daughter were "racing" through the water of the 65-foot swimming pool of the Brentwood estate. "I let her win eight times," the actress says, "and then on the ninth time I struck out just a little bit and I won. She took a look at me and she swam back over to the steps and climbed out of the pool. She stood there and said, 'I'll never play with you as long as I live, never.' I said, 'Christina, look, my body is longer than yours. I could have won all the time. I'm bigger than you are. I'm faster than you are. I can win all the time. Now let's get back in the pool and play.' I picked her up to throw her into the pool and jumped in with her and made her swim." - From "The Revolt of Joan Crawford's Daughter," Redbook 1960

Having an innocent competition and teaching your daughter that you may not succeed in everything in life is okay, but the thing that stuck out for me in this clip was how Joan completely dismissed her daughter as she was walking out of the pool. To Joan, this was a *real* competition and not just silly Mother/daughter moments.

The people that defend Joan Crawford should remember Christina's response: "she wasn't your mother." It's why I love the portrayal of the Queen in The Crown, and wonder of King Charles really meant it when he said he missed his mommy. Queen Elizabeth may have been a wonderful monarch, but was she a good mother? I don't know. She did love her dogs and horses, kinda like Joan Crawford. I wonder what's the British version of "no wire hangers?" "No marrying Camilla!" lol

Had Christina actually won the "race" against Mommie Dearest, she probably would have been punished (beaten) for upstaging her mother. If you know what's good for you in such a "family," you gracefully lose to preserve your hide...and maybe even your life.

I know Christina Turned the story around because she wanted to win all 9 times and losing on the 9th time but I guess I don't blame her for turning the story around because The mother actually abused her by picking her up and throwing her into the pool and made her swim alot more. That's abuse.

That's what I've been saying, but no people now a days are letting their children use them as an ass wipe in which they can get crap all over. Because parents are told that giving a few slaps to the child's behind is abuse. My mother gave me the wooden brush and soap when I went out of line, and I'm thankful for that because it taught me respect! She didn't beat me or wound me in any way she just hurt me enough to know that how I was behaving was unacceptable. And I'm a better man for that.
