Monarch Butterflies are fascinating creatures. Mary Schmidt from Lichterman Nature Center in Memphis, Tennessee explains how monarchs migrate both on the east and west coasts of the United States. She talks about the effect of milkweed on that migration and what humans can do in their backyards to help sustain the butterfly population and help them on their long yearly journey.

As a child, I observed a massive flock of monarch butterflies who rested in my grandparents huge black walnut trees in Central Iowa. I do not recall the time of year. Only that the trees were covered in butterflies. Then gone the next day.

I've been rather confused with monarchs since I was a child. I remember seeing monarch chrysalis/chrysili??? in West Virginia in the fall around Labor day. However it was common to see them mid summer up in PA. I'm always looking at milkweed to see if I can catch sight of a catapillar or chrysalis but I've never nailed down what time of year to expect them. I didn't realize there were multiple generations per year. I've tried starting milk weed several times with no luck. I think I end up leaving pods I pick in the car and they get too hot 😮‍💨. We used to have a huge patch of it along our road, but the city kept spraying it so all that comes up now is a forest of teasel....which is quite a bit uglier than the milkweed if you ask me. Government at its finest 🤔. I'm going to redouble my efforts to get some milkweed groing again. Sadly I haven't seen a monarch in many years. Wexused to have so many monarchs, tiger swallow tails, and other huge butterflies growning up in the 70s now all that seems to be around are chines cabbage moths. It's such a shame.
