​@@nshoofficial To be honest I don't see how Edgar and Matilda can both be disputed; they were both proclaimed monarchs by the governments of the time. Matilda had her rival (King Stephen) imprisoned during her brief reign from 7th April to 1st November 1141 and was proclaimed Queen of England. She didn't have time to be crowned Queen before the peasants revolted against her and forced her to release Stephen. But since when has a coronation dictated the beginning of a monarch's reign? If that's the benchmark then Edward VIII was never a King and Queen Elizabeth II only ruled for 69 years - it's ridiculous. A monarch's reign starts when they are proclaimed by the government, which usually happens within hours of their predecessor's death. Queen Jane was proclaimed by the government, so therefore was Queen; Queen Matilda was proclaimed, therefore was Queen; King Edgar was proclaimed; therefore was King. William viewed Edgar's rule as legitimate because he waited until Edgar yielded (17th December 1066) before having himself proclaimed and crowned (25th December 1066). King Stephen clearly recognised Queen Matilda's reign, as when he was released from prison he had himself re-proclaimed and had another coronation on Christmas Day 1141 to assert his second reign. If they recognised their rivals' rule then surely historians from hundreds of years later should do so too??? Louis is a slightly different case as he never had control on the government and there was already a crowned and proclaimed King (John) on the throne, who Louis never managed to dispose. Therefore, Louis reign is understandably disputed. However, to dispute the reigns of Edgar, Matilda or Jane is stupid as you can't make one benchmark for them (must be crowned) but ignore it for others (Edward VIII)!
