Hurricane Dorian was an extremely powerful and devastating Category 5 Atlantic hurricane, that became the most intense tropical cyclone on record to strike the Bahamas, and is regarded as the worst natural disaster in the country's history.[1] It was also one of the most powerful hurricanes recorded in the Atlantic Ocean in terms of 1-minute sustained winds, with these winds peaking at 185 mph (295 km/h). In addition, Dorian surpassed Hurricane Irma of 2017 to become the most powerful Atlantic hurricane on record outside of the tropics. It was the fourth named storm, second hurricane, the first major hurricane, and the first Category 5 hurricane of the 2019 Atlantic hurricane season. Dorian struck the Abaco Islands on September 1 with maximum sustained winds of 185 mph (295 km/h), tying with the 1935 Labor Day hurricane for the highest wind speeds of an Atlantic hurricane ever recorded at landfall. Dorian went on to strike Grand Bahama at similar intensity, stalling just north of the territory with unrelenting winds for at least 24 hours. The resultant damage to these islands was catastrophic; most structures were flattened or swept to sea, and at least 70,000 people were left homeless. After it ravaged through the Bahamas, Dorian proceeded along the coasts of the Southeastern United States and Atlantic Canada, leaving behind considerable damage and economic losses in those regions. Dorian developed from a tropical wave on August 24 over the Central Atlantic. The storm moved through the Lesser Antilles and became a hurricane north of the Greater Antilles on August 28. Dorian proceeded to undergo rapid intensification over the following days to reach its peak as a Category 5 hurricane with one-minute sustained winds of 185 mph (295 km/h) and a minimum central pressure of 910 millibars (26.87 inHg) by September 1. It made landfall in the Bahamas in Elbow Cay, just east of Abaco Island, and again on Grand Bahama several hours later, where it remained nearly stationary for the next day or so. After weakening considerably, Dorian began moving northwestward on September 3, parallel to the east coast of Florida. Dwindling in strength, the hurricane turned to the northeast the next day and made landfall on Cape Hatteras at Category 2 intensity on September 6. It transitioned into an extratropical cyclone before striking first Nova Scotia and then Newfoundland with hurricane-force winds on September 8. It finally dissipated near Greenland on September 10. From August 26 to August 28, the storm affected several parts of the northernmost Lesser Antilles. Damaging winds primarily affected the Virgin Islands where gusts reached 111 mph (179 km/h). Extensive precautionary measures were taken to mitigate damage, especially in Puerto Rico, where one person died. Elsewhere in the Lesser Antilles, impacts from the storm were relatively minor. In preparation for the storm, the states of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia all declared a state of emergency and many coastal counties from Florida to North Carolina issued mandatory evacuation orders. Damage in the Bahamas was catastrophic due to the prolonged and intense storm conditions, including heavy rainfall, high winds and storm surge, with thousands of homes destroyed and at least 77 direct deaths recorded, 74 of which occurred in the Bahamas. The true death toll is unknown with 245 people still missing as of April 2020. Dorian is the costliest disaster in Bahamian history, estimated to have left behind $3.4 billion in damage.

I agree I still think a storm this size. Going through its eyewall replacement cycle. They also failed to mention how much more organized a hurricane gets once it finishes that replacement cycle it could very well rip through Florida without hesitation to get to the warm gulf waters.

Food for thought: News services are pulling data from NOAA. However, sea buoy and local airport data are NOT showing nearly the same wind force as being reported. Check the live links provided in a YT video called "Hurricane Dorian" Discrepancies Sept 1, 2019 - quite interesting to think this being hyped - stay safe!

@@gabriellahanley3314 I don't think we're allowed to post links, so you must copy and paste "Hurricane Dorian Discrepancies Sept 1, 2019" in the search to see what she was reporting for the whole day of data.. it's all different on the ground than in the news - kind of a mystery to me..

We can only hope 74 winds or less winds reach us as Fox news stated. A (catagory 1) really does not worry me anyhow. Catagory 2 hurricane force winds do not bother me either. It's when catagory 3 or higher is what concerns me. I have been through every catagory living on the islands and in Miami within 23 different hurricanes. With my experience dealing with them, I have a unorthodox style that proved out a strategic style that my family is totally safe in the most dangerous of all hurricanes without struggling to get fuel or struggling to find a hotel in case we flee. Unfortunately it came at a cost losing everything in Andrew as a catagory 5 and losing my childhood home in little torch key just walking distance from big pine key where Irma struck both islands with cat 5 winds with the eye going over. So yes, my unorthodox style is outstanding but at a huge cost. People should not underestimate the power of hurricane Dorian. Most people do not know what it's like to be in a bathtub with wood and mattresses in top of you with a hurricane tearing down walls to only a few feet above the ground with objects flying around you. Here is a thought for everyone to research. Hurricane Andrew hit the east coast in South Miami but every major news station at that time said it was going to make the northern turn. This is the same as hurricane Dorian. Well with the power of hurricane Andrew, it went through the low pressure system that was supposed to of taken it north being so powerful and bulldozed south Miami like a fraight train. So think about it, with hurricane Andrew and hurricane Dorian being similar strengths, could it happen again? After all, the hurricane hunters in the planes and National hurricane center in Miami showed very high uncertainty. Though things became more advanced in technology since hurricane Andrew, can it happen again? Sure it can, regardless if it's hurricane Dorian or one of the upcoming Hurricanes, it will.

Florida Crypto R I agree, they were wrong with Irma’s path too, people evacuated to the west and she went right there. Yes, you can listen to forecasters but you have to make an educated decision as well. They aren’t always 100% accurate.
@supportyourtroopsathletes64605 жыл бұрын
@@karykares ..... Exactly and thank you. The educated guess is what people need to go with within their heart. I recall that with Irma on the misleading of the news media. Hurricane Irma was one of those unpredictable hurricanes that effected all of Florida one way or the other. I stayed put during that one as it hit near me with only catagory 1 winds but it destroyed my familys home in little torch key, I was and still am gutted over that, It is not the same.

This could become a nuclear powered hurricane!. Floridas power stations storm walls can only handle 20 feet storm surges. At the size the storm currently is it will be breached , that will flood the stations cooling water intake and cause a complete meltdown!. If I was a resident I'd be evaluating away from the nuclear fallout as fast as possible.
