In both of our previous marriages, money management played a huge role in the downfall of our relationship. So when we got married, neither of us wanted to be in that type of situation ever again. So we laid down some ground rules for our finances early, and came up with a plan to manage our finances in a somewhat unconventional way. We have a single a joint bank account for paying our bills, but our spending money, we kept separate. Why you ask? Grab a cup of coffee and sit down with us at the Cabin and we'll explain our reasons.
We have at least two more videos in this series we want to share with you guys in the future. So if you enjoyed this content, and you want to see more, be sure to leave us a comment and let us know.

My husband and I did the exact same thing! We were finally debt free 2 yrs ago, except for our mortgage. We sold our house in Seattle 6 months ago and bought 40 acres in Arizona. When our house is complete, we will be off grid completely with no debt! Its an amazing feeling!

One of the BEST things i believe my husband and I did is keeping our money separate. Almost 8 years now! I think it has saved us so many fights! We split everything right down the middle, but Of course we will always help each other if one is short. I recommend everyone do this!!

I totally agree with the separate accounts and a joint one for bills. We've done it for years and there's no argument about who's buying what and never any worry about accidently spending money that's for bills. It's worked well when we've both been out of work and now during better times. We do talk about savings and the future as a couple and both put money aside for that, but knowing we each have a certain amount to spend or save as we wish helps so much. We've never once argued about money, felt any resentment, guilt or shame over purchases and we both feel financially equal even with different incomes. Also, very importantly, it gives me the security knowing if we ever split up I've got my own money, bank account, credit score and that puts me in a more financially secure position . I appreciate it would be harder if you've only got one income between you but in that case, it's even more important to have your own bank account and create a financial history for yourself, even if it's only minimal.

Love it, my daughter is marrying next year and they don't want to join their finances, I recommended that they get a household account that they deposit a percentage of their salaries into make it fair as her plan was that she pays household bills and he pays house as they wil go into marriage with a prenuptial and he is expecting a big payout for insurance compensation for an injury he had while at work. It might be enough to buy a house or put a substantial deposit on a house but the house will stay his. I just felt that way she would be at a disadvantage if marriage failed a he would have spent his money on his assets and she would have spent her income on just household bills. Love the idea of the joint savings too.

Your concerns are valid, I would probably encourage her to talk to a lawyer before they finalize the agreement. See what happens if he uses the settlement money on a home- i suspect he would only be entitled to initial investment +some return. Aka He has to buy her out if he wants to keep the house

Oh my gosh, your story is so much like mine. My second husband was the love of my life. Although I loved my first husband, the father of my children, we just couldn’t make it work. My second husband and I both brought children into our marriage. We both also brought important lessons, both financially and emotionally, and a deeper love together. When my first husband passed away, yes it was devastating. When the love of my life passed away, it almost destroyed me. I’m almost 70, and I was blessed with both of them, and I’d never deny either. Stick together, Rachel and Todd. Love each other today because none of us is guaranteed a tomorrow. Recognize, express and acknowledge your love every single day. You too are blessed.

I justed ended my 20 year marriage and one of the BIGGEST hurdles was finances. I'm now 2 years post divorce and ironically (or not) I'm now in a place financially I was never in while married. I'm doing better as a single mother than a married one. I have no car or credit debt and only have my 4 walls and mortgage. Super grateful for a frugal mindset!

We did the exact same thing the “middle” account and two separate accounts where our paychecks were automatically deposited. That way he could buy his stuff and I could buy mine and we could also buy each other “surprise” gifts! All extra $$ went into the 4 th account. And we always paid our bills ahead of due date which we still do 40 years later. And we both worked hard and raised our kid and put her through college. With this program we paid off our land and house in the first eight years of our marriage and saved enough to buy our next homestead. We did not and still don’t do movies or travel much ( and if it was a trip it was camping or backpacking ) although we both did in our younger days. Congratulations on owning your home now that’s quite an accomplishment!

I totally agree with you that it's important to continue to have special experiences with your family while working to pay off debt, but I also think that Dave's advice is more directed towards people in ridiculous amounts of debt who need to get rid of it as fast as possible. I think those of us who only have minimal, manageable debt aren't in a position that is so urgent.

I don't know why the "middle account" as you call it, is not more popular. It makes so much sense, a bills account based on the percentage you bring in. It is fair and smart. Trust has a big part in it, I'm sure.

100% agree and love this!!! I was a financial planner for many years. In my experience the lack of communication surrounding finances in a relationship is what caused many breakdowns or break ups. I have seen it all. I recommend exactly what you just shared. It works wonderfully as long as you follow through and communicate. My hubby and I have practiced this is in our marriage for over 15 years. It works for us!

We have been married just over a year and recently bought a home together. I love this talk! My husband and I had a similar model for years and it didn't work for us to be good savers. Neither of us felt accountable to each other. We did a modified Ramsey plan. At first my husband was not on board. However I did it myself and paid off my car in 2 years. Then I proposed if he agreed to get in board our first payoff would be his truck (20k) and then emergency fund. The power of team work us incredible. I kept a chart on the fridge. Planning for things like vacation money and Christmas were game changers. No stress fun money is so freeing.we paid cash for my new (to me) vehicle. Just mortgage now. This is a great reminder for me because admittedly we've been slacking lately. Such an important topic! ❤

Thanks for being so honest and straightforward. You didnt throw your previous spouses under the bus or get sidetracked from how you both eneded up where you were. I love how you divided up your finances, separate spending vs bills. We always shared a checking account and we may have avoided a few fights by doing what you both have done. Love your transparency. I’ve always struggled with talking about such personal information. We share almost the exact same history before we got married 21 years ago. Finances were a big issue. I had been a single mom for 12 years, so independence was a big one for me. My husband made a very generous income and we opened a joint account, which had its benefits and drawbacks. Some years don’t the road, we worked where our payroll checks had to be auto pay into a specific bank. So we kept out joint account and we each now have our own accounts which works for personal spending. It’s worked great! I started following Dave Ramsey for about 6 months, tracking every dollar. Way too much work. We’ve had some rough financial lessons prior to this marriage, so we have been diligent in saving money, paying bills on time and now a mortgage on a 1917 log home in 1 1/3 acres in Tennessee. We are building up long term storage and I’m canning for the first time. We have Dave Ramsey cars 🥴 Our goal is to pay off the mortgage and be totally debt free. Not an easy task when you’re in your late 60’s early 70’s and living on social security. God has been good to us and we are grateful. Thank you for all that you do.

It's also stepping up to learn everyway of food preservation. I am 69 year old married for 51 years, but we lived payday to payday. So now in our life I will still grow a small garden, and keep learning ways to keep food. In our young past, we feed our kids, but we would go without many times. I don't want that to happen again. I so appreciate you sharing this video. My husband and I separated our checking accounts after 10 years of marriage and it smoothed things out considerably. Some people did think that as Christians it was the wrong move to make however after praying about it we felt confident. We didn’t open a third bank account. My husband still uses our joint account and I opened my own. I pay the bills from my account. My husband writes me one check each month to cover his portion. We have been married 38 years & this has worked very well for the last 28 of those years!

Great info. Looking forward to your next video. The hubby and I had very similar circumstances minus the children. Struggling to get on the same page financially. He's the spender, I'm the saver. But he's also the moneymaker. We're taking baby steps but hopefully we'll get there

I absolutely love your channel and yall are such goals and inspiration. Thank you for sharing your journey! My husband even said he really likes yalls channel which is saying alot since he supports my love for gardening but is also indifferent about it. Is there a part 2 to this series? Id love to get more information and inspiration on how you reached your homesteading dream. Keep up the great content!!!

A few years ago I started a second checking account. My husband thought I was wasting my time but it helps me separate things. His payroll in one, mine in another. Also this past year, I’ve been paying extra on those little payments. We’re certainly not debt free but we only have mortgage, our car payments and utilities/food/gas etc.....and it is the beginning of a beautiful debt free relationship 😊All in time and thanks so much for sharing cause I feel better about my decisions ❤️

When my kids were small, the library was such a blessing! We didn't have cable either, just dvd's, many borrowed and not add many bought!

What great info. Going through a divorce now. No child support. It is so hard. Can’t wait to see where I am in 10 years. It is bleak right now. Love y’all!

Oh I'm so glad when I come across a video of yours I didn't see! This is such valuable information, and wonderful lessons for those 20 somethings thinking about getting credit cards! JUST DON'T!!! PLEASE trust the older ones and just make your life easier with debit only!

I operate very similarly and have from the very beginning of my adult life. I believe in transparency and communicating the budget. But I've always had independent accounts,, and a joint account for household management. DR makes a lot of money on a common sense system my father believed in until the day he died. Lol, I remember someone raving about DR years ago. I went through the program (offered through a military family program) & kinda scratched my head. It's amazing how common sense can feel so novel when packaged in a manageable way. It's not easy for people to open up and share financial growth. Thank you for this video!

We did the same thing. It works perfectly and we don't fight about money. Our financial advisor thought it was ridiculous until she remarried and did the same thing :)

Thanks for sharing. If I ever get married again, I will have separate finances and likely a joint account for joint and household expenses. It’s a great model in my opinion.
