Many people comment on the amazing portrayal that Toby Stephens does of Mr. Rochester, I can never deny that, it is truly amazing. I wish more praise were given to Ruth Wilson for her outstanding performance as Jane. This is the only version where I can see her being the passionate creature that is described in the book. I love their chemistry! I could watch this over and over again.

What I love about this version is that they have captured the lighter, flirtatious, humorous parts so well. You know, the parts where Jane and Mr. Rochester actually have fun. The serious scenes have been done well on many occasions (and very badly on some) but many adaptations seem to forget that despite the novel's Gothic style it's not all doom and gloom. It's also a love story, where two people enjoy each other's company and share a couple of laughs along the way as well.

Toby is the definitive Rochester intelligent, brooding, morose and (this is what sets him apart) with a devilish sarcastic sense of humour. So many who take on this role forget this aspect of his character, if you ask me it’s because most have never read the book and yet it is fundamental to Rochester’s personality.

Well i have read the book several times and the impression i got about Mr. Rochester is that he was a sadist, cruel, selfish, brooding and totally a self satisfied creep. He had that cunning wit and sarcasm but he used it only to be sociable because he knew that he was physically unattractive according to 19th century standards. Even when he was proposing Jane , his lines were - " I must have you for my own, entirely my own", this is not love , this is just called as feeling of lust or having possession over your personal favourite thing. Even in the fire scene he tries to seduce her, just imagine an employer almost 20 years older than his employee and is trying to seduce her.

Honestly I don't really care how well they portray Jane or Rochester physically. Lots of people are complaining that Ruth is simply to tall to play Jane, and Rochester is too handsome... Well I say aren't you picky?! I'd rather have a tall Jane and a handsome Rochester with fabulous chemistry than a pair of dull masses with stone expressions. Jane Eyre is all about the love between two souls, despite statuses, physical appearances, and wealth. Its absolutely beautiful

I believe all versions were masterfully done. But no other actors had the chemistry of Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens in this version. They were simply earth-shattering as Jane and Rochester, truly bringing the depth of their bond in the book to life and portraying their violent yet tender passionate nature. They made me believe truly that they were soulmates.

Love thiiis 😍😍😍 It just occured to me that Rochester offered her 50 pounds after hearing how little Jane had in the world (5 shillings). She had just said that the aunt had cast her away because she was poor and now, 10 years later, she was still very much a poor woman. Rochester wanted Jane to return "home" with money - to no longer be the poor girl she once was. He wanted her to have that moment of "triumph" over the aunt who had wronged her and I love him for it 😭😭😭 I had always just assumed he offered such a great amount to make sure she would be able to travel comfortably. And Jane is as honourable and unbending as ever in her principles and morals 😭😭😭 rejecting the 50 pounds and only taking what is rightfully hers. Girl i lysm

Although this is not the version most attached to the book, it is my favorite by far. The other versions have had excellent actors, but the key here is the overwhelming chemistry between Toby and Ruth that has not been seen before or after them. Toby makes a Rochester deep, changing but more playful, his character enjoys flirting lightly with Jane. As for Ruth, I find her fascinating in her role as Jane, shy, but at the same time dazzling when she looks at Rochester. The changes they made in the script, seem fair and somehow make the story more beautiful, as for example, the scene when Rochester compares Jane to the bird of fire. That scene is beautiful too. My favorite of all, is this, the scene when Jane asks for permission to be absent. Passion bolts can be seen in kilometers.

One of the most beautiful stories ever written about the historical injustices done towards women and the poor. The struggle for purpose and meaning in spite of poverty, loss, loneliness and bereavement. For yrs I lived around the corner from where Charlotte Bronte lived and was born (Thornton/Haworth) and so had the privilege of been able to visit the Bronte museum and also walk the paths that Charlotte trod regularly. There is without a doubt an atmosphere or, for want of a better word, a presence about Haworth and the beautiful countryside where Charlotte walked that stirs up beautiful yearnings inside you that can't be measured or satisfied with material wealth. ❤❤❤

If you read Elizabeth Gaskell or Jane Austen, you realize this Jane Eyre is acceptable as a type for this era. Jane Austen's heroines are generally much more frivolous, precocious and flippant, Gaskells are generally much more sombre and serious. Jane was not naturally serious timid or introverted if you read carefully. I think Ruth and the writers did well to make her a little respectable and sedate, while allowing her to be a little girlish and fae. Ruth might have been a little old to be Jane, but she did her best to appear inexperienced. And no one that I can think of delved into Rochesters layers as Toby did. He and Ruth are perfection in the later scenes where Rochester and Jane reunite I could watch it over and over when Rochester cries. Brilliantly done

I love Rochester, he's the prefect man. Dark, sarcastic, grumpy... I love it.

I'm pretty sure it is, divided in 7 or 8 parts, but still, its the whole thing.

This is my favorite version, though I would never presume to argue on which version remains most true to the book. I read it several years ago and I can remember there being some things in there that Rochester says to Jane that did not exactly scream healthy relationship. Something about Jane's not having relatives to meddle being "the best part" and threatening Jane with "violence" after the wedding scene. Rochester is supposed to be flawed and morally ambiguous, but for me to root for this relationship what I need is what this version provides: an equality in spirit and an obviously conflicted Rochester who would never intentionally harm Jane. In this version I can understand Rochester's logic that his behavior isn't hurting Jane. God can't punish or judge Jane for marrying him, if she is ignorant. Likewise she wouldn't reprimand herself. Rochester believes marriage to him will give Jane the emotional and material support she will likely will otherwise never have. It's not just him being selfish and taking what he wants because he wants it. In this version he tries to seduce he into changing her mind, and though physically she responds he listens to her "no" and stops. He even offers to compromise and have a platonic relationship with her instead. In this way he distinguishes himself as my favorite version of the character.

The main reason why this version of Jane Eyre is because is so good and beloved is because of two people Toby Stephens and Ruth Wilson who breath life, realism, passion, playfulness, warmth, heart and fierceness in the characters of Edward Rochester and Jane Eyre, these two are my second favourite Edward and Jane after Ciara Hinds and Amanda Roots from Jane Eyre 1997

This is one of the funniest and one of my favorite parts of the book, and yet it's left out in almost every other adaptation!

This version of Jane is so confident and demure...I love her sense of self-worth. And dear lord, mr. Rochester...he is...UNFAIRLY attractive. Passionate, blunt, masculine...he's perfect.
