What tips do you have for managing payments on Camino? Or do you have any questions?

Greetings Sir. The question may sound weird and childish but I have a relevant query. All talk about reaching Santiago and not about returning back to starting point. I am an Indian preparing my itinerary for visa issuance. Please let me know how vud i get back to Madrid after 16 days of walk from there. I have to show my number off days stay for return ticket. Please guide. Regards

Not many people 'walk back' from Santiago. The way markings are designed for walking 'to' Santiago. So you need to take care with navigation.

Thanks Rob. If you’re taking your cards from home, let your bank know so you don’t get blocked when you try to make your first transaction. Also, some atms are tap, not insert. One final thing, a lot of banks charge an exorbitant amount to withdraw cash, I think the largest was 7 Euro, so shop around in big cities, some banks are fee free. Buen Camino!

In October we found “tap and go” had become popular in larger restaurants, supermarkets and towns which was a change since pre Covid for us. Usually before we leave Australia, we purchase low denomination Euros to prevent being caught with only large notes. Between two of us we usually both have daily cash spending money in a small purse, a travel money card loaded with a sum of euros worn in money belt, and our general purpose credit card as an emergency backup. Keeping each item separately means we do not have to publicly access our “stash” . This has worked well for us on 4 Camino’s, cheers👍

I found it surprisingly difficult to pay with card, and even though I used Chase and Starling the ATM exchange rate was almost £1 to €1. I took sterling but couldn't find anywhere to change it. Cash is certainly king.

Which Camino did you walk? I use a card about 50% of the time. Though if you stayed in Albergues mainly, most of those prefer cash. But bars/cafes/shops etc mostly take cards.

As usual your videos are enlightened and what keeps me sane. I can’t wait to do the Frances. I’ve always been a terrible over packer. Got to try to not take too much. Think I’ve settled on my Salomon trailer 2 with super feet insoles. I’ve tried so many different shoes and keep coming back to these. Think I finally gave my backpack organised too. Thanks to some help 😊

Hi Rob! Suggestion for a new topic: do you have a will prepared when you go in the Camino?
@robscamino

LOL. I do! And life insurance. This is largely due to the fact that I own and run two businesses. So it's important for my family and the continuation of those business as many people derive their livelihood from them.

I carry cash and use it for all small amounts. I am a big fan of Revolute and have used it in many countries. I also take a Debit Card as a backup. Withdrawing cash from an ATM often carries a charge, €6 typically so I do it infrequently. The switch to cashless has really taken hold since Covid but I prefer to use cash for small and rural businesses because it is cheaper for them. In cities and for larger amounts I use my Revolute. FYI. I have also noticed a big move to QR codes since Covid which is great. Scanning a QR code to log onto a WiFi is much better than getting a piece of paper then having to locate your reading glasses.😊

Hi Rob We always take a few options as we are worried about slotting cards into an ATM aswell. My wife brings her debit card I use a Qantas card. Rates aren’t the best with it but I’m comfortable using it . We take a bulk amount of cash and split it up amongst our bags. And lastly our Oz credit card for our last resort. Our first two trips to Spain cash was definitely king even in Madrid. Now in the cities and larger towns the machine comes out to pay with card with no complaint. Small cafes of course still want cash That was as of September last year. Cheers Mick

It would be good to have a discussion about travel insurance and is it worth it? Over the years, I've paid out big $$$ in insurance and got very little back. Insurance companies seem to find reasons not to pay out, sometimes because I have omitted to do something. For example, I once had to come home early, paying to change my flight, because of a knee issue. The Spanish doctor who examined me in Ponferrada didn't advise me to go home on the medical certificate, because I had already told him that was my plan. A small, but costly, omission.
@robscamino
@robscamino Жыл бұрын
Indeed, insurance can be expensive, but I wouldn't travel with out it. In a similar situation I called the insurance company for advice. And followed their instructions. But hindsight is easy.........

how do you open a euro account
@robscamino
@robscamino Жыл бұрын
It might be different in different countries. But here in Australia any of the major banks seem to offer this service. An account can be opened in a range of major currencies. BUT. I do it for convenience. I'm sure when I deposit into this account I'm not getting the best exchange rate. And of course there are transaction charges. You would need to check all this with your selected Bank.

I can't recommend Revolut highly enough. Revolut is a virtual card payment app it's so handy and convenient and yes there are far more smaller shops taking card payments now. I think I took €300 cash with me on my last trip and I had nearly €100 coming home after 3 weeks. So set up Revolut on your phone, open whats called a vault in the app and every month or whatever stash some money into the vault and leave it there until your trip and then use whats in your vault.

Yes...was just going to mention Revolute too. I used the physical card in ATMS as I was anxious that my normal card would get swallowed (of course it didn't). Just transferred funds into my Revolute account by phone before I used the machine
