Mongoose Dolomite ALX in 2024 - Best Fat Tire Bike for Snow Riding?

The Mongoose Dolomite ALX was a great bike in 2021 when it was released. I modified the bike in 2022 to be a snow bike. 2024 starts with a rare snow and ice event that has shut down the city. That means it's time to put the ALX back in action as a snow rider.

I have plans for an HD on mine too. How is your chain-line? Did you need an after market chain ring to offset for lower gears? On my other bikes the chain would bend too much in low gear so an after market chain ring like a Lekie was needed.
@thomash7573
@thomash7573 7 ай бұрын
@@michaelsprinzeles4022 It was the 42T option when I ordered the kit from Eunorau. Lucked out that it was a narrow-wide with good offset. It is in a straight line with the second largest ring on the wheel. I can use all gears without problem but I usually leave it on that ring when using throttle only. Good power and decent top end and better on the motor.

@@thomash7573 Yes, thanks. I'm familiar with the HD & 02 and like an offset 42T narrow wide best for being able to use all the gears. I just wasn't sure of the stock chain line (I hate the stock rings for drops & chain line) or if an offset aftermarket one would rub the chainstay. You've set my mind at ease. You're lucky to have found the Eunorau option because the other offset narrow wide chain rings are much more expensive (& I can't imagine that they perform any better). Thank you!

Forget that, I have the Juneau with the 1000w Bafang 6.5 hub, riding that thing in the snow is borderline suicidal.
@michaelsprinzeles4022
@michaelsprinzeles4022 7 ай бұрын
@@bassw1758 Unlike a hub drive, with a mid-drive you can change the torque going to the ground with the bikes gearing. Like with a car, if you're sliding too much go up 1 gear. On my e-mtb I swapped my 100 watt HD controller for a 2500 watt controller. I can ride my e-mtb even in the snow (if I have to). I can't wait to slap an HD on my ALX for more pleasurable snow riding.

I'd love to see a fat bike version of the Hyper X Carbon. Built to modern fat bike standards. Capable of handling 4.8" -5.05" tires and a decent 1×11 wide range drive train. 😊

Kev Thanks for your dolomite ALX videos!! They are part of what originally inspired me to build my Dolomite a few years ago. Which is now a dual motor awd ebike. These bikes are so much fun, Especially as an Ebike conversion. I wish I would have got the ALX!! I've never seen it on sale though.

Fat bike keeps me sane in the long NH winters, but every snow is different, sometimes the bike slices through the snow with ease, and some times the snow will stick to the tires making every pedal stoke a chore.

When I'm not on a dirt bike or pit bike, I'm usually on my fat bike which is the Dolomite ALX. I use it all 4 seasons for trail riding and nothing more. Its great in snow, sand, mud, roots, shallow water, and offtrail areas that can offer all sorts of crap. Did a few upgrades such as a new saddle, grips, pedals, and a stem raiser and made it all the better. No complaints. Very capable bike and perfect for 1 bike owners who want to ride all seasons in any condition. No matter what the weather is, you can ride this thing in it.

Hey Kevin, why don't you do a conversion for your fat tire bike? I'm sure you can find a supplier to sponsor the video. I've actually been considering building an ebike so I can get exactly what I want. It would be nice to see an example of what to expect. I would think your audience in particular would be highly receptive to a kit vs buying a pre-built ebike. After all, one of the central themes of your channel is upgrading bikes.

I rode my Dolomite ALX in the snow today too. I also have not ridden it since the last time it snowed. Before fatbikes, i'd just ride my mtb or CX/urban bike, I cant believe i ever lived without my mongoose snow bike!! I rode it around the hood in 6-8" of snow. The bike always gets attention, and I let people try it out

Although this year in Minnesota is a bust as far as the snow goes but we have plenty of cold so far. The ALX has held up in stock form (did have a cassette failure) for a few winters now with the help of studded tires. We run the fat tire bikes on frozen lakes, snow covered paved trails, and we actually groom the single track trails that we ride the mountain bikes on in the summer.

About 6 years ago I had to go to another part of the city. I decided to take the bike and the bus rather than drive. I was there much longer than anticipated. It was supposed to be a 1/2 hour that turned into 5 hours. In that 5 plus hours (waiting for and then taking 2 buses), 5-6" of snow fell on the ground. I had to bike the last 3 miles with 700x32 tires. Even with the thinner tires, it was still at least 3 times more effort than on clear streets. Like you said, it's like going up a steep hill. It slid all over the place too. Almost fell a few times.

The funny thing is I told one of my friends in Québec what temp it was and she asked me if we even had heaters in our houses in Alabama 😂. Her only exposure to the south has been in the summer, so I can see where her impression would be that it’s even warm here in the winter….and to be fair I think I’ve asked her if she had an air conditioner at one point or another 😂

You're lucky! I got out for just under 1 hour on my ALX this year, before roads were salted & plowed. I'm almost up to 2 hours in 2 years (like with you, it only got used in fresh snow). You need a balaclava for cold rides. I will eventually add a mid-drive to my ALX (as I have with my other bikes) so I can ride it more regularly more often. Just FYI on another topic: On my snow ride I had just replaced my rechargeable light batteries. After my ride I kept the lights on, being curious after your queery. The batteries had been sitting for at least 3 months and kept my lights bright for 8 to 10 hours respectively (I had 2 lights). They continued to run getting dimmer & dimmer up to 12 to 14 hours respectively. Not scientific but it should answer your question, somewhat.

Ski goggles. I commute in them. I would say riding through powder in 2.25 knobby tires aired down to 13 psi, requires 100% more power than the same bike with 2.20 slicks and 22 psi on dry ground. Im gonna be so fast next spring.. i hope.

Beautiful Dolomite! Kentucky snow lasts at least 3.6 minutes longer than your snow. At least in my area..... I've got a bikes direct fat tire bike from years ago. Lotta fun when you can make it happen! But I gotta admit, it feels weird pumping the wider cranks and tires. Kinda like rodeo bull riding I guess. Even with the wider knobbies and lower air pressure, I still find myself on the ground every time I ride it. But that's low skill level on my part for sure. LOL

Moongoose is and was a nice brand, I will not consider a big box brand because has some history and have some cool stuff. My SS Maurice was amazing. It handles very nice and can do some single tracks with no modifications. I love it. The freedom thickslic tires cand handle stairs, roots etc bery good choice, not a fast rolling tire but perfect for fun.

I thought we might get some snow in Houston so I could play on my fat tire bikes and get a couple cool photos. If there was any, I didn’t see it. I’m ready for warmer days myself. Others deal with extreme cold weather like any normal day. But I don’t like it. I’ve at least gotten our household prepped enough that it’s just an uncomfortable inconvenience.

I actually like riding (trail riding) in colder weather. However, that’s cold weather by normal Alabama winter standard: high or 50 with a low of 30-ish. I don’t handle 0 degrees well

@shaymtbrider7244 sized frame options for the dolomite alx would be the main difference. Historically, the Argus TRX has used a Shimano Tourney instead of the ALX’s Microshift drivetrain, but that might have changed with all the parts substitutions we’ve seen since 2020. They are certainly near identical except for the color and sizing options - which doesn’t matter if the one TRX size fits 👍🏻
