My wife has a Regina Music Box from the late 1800s that plays perforated metal music disks. This one is “Die Wacht am Rhein”.

Remember, it's not a precursor to audio recording, it's a precursor to midi files.
@HannekeDebie2 жыл бұрын
The funny part is, nowadays there are musicboxes that work with midi files as input, instead of disks, cillinders or paper rolls. So it has come full circle I guess.

I love all those antique music boxes! Their complex sounds sure beat the little musical jewelry boxes with the spinning ballerinas or the wind-up musical toys. Interesting that a German marching song was used. It sounds more Christmas-y than military.

The spirit of the German volk will bring ammunition to all the troops at the front, but only so long as the munitions factory workers don't read defeatist newspapers. What's that, it's 1916? Oh, dear...
@GameMaker3_5 Жыл бұрын
That's likely just due to how many Christmas songs are on music boxes or use them for sound...

For the Germans…it can be both. 😂
@darknesskingsized8996 Жыл бұрын
They have a wider comb, so they can do more complex songs since they have better range. Not to mention the huge metal disk in place of the usual cylinder. Toys and jewelry boxes couldn't fit that stuff.

My mother and I visited a friend. He played his Regina Music Box in perfect condition. It was beautiful and I was surprised how loud it was for being a music box. He also had a very rare player grand piano that you also wound up. It played beautifully! They have both passed on now to the greatest of places, and this brings back the pleasant memory to focus on. Thanks Durbeck von Wyman!!

Interesting to hear it as a melody piece; I'm so used to hearing it as a soldiers' song (which it is, and a good one - I'm just going to search for some now), but nice to hear this version. Lovely box - thanks for sharing! P. S.: I've often wondered: other than the printing on the top surface, do the discs have a way of knowing where the start is - or could you load one part way through? I notice the boxes always have a sort of clunk and stop at the end. (Oh - this one doesn't clunk. But still stops.)
@mattmarzula2 жыл бұрын
The large ovular slot is the start point. Obvious once you look at one. If only someone made a video where you could see it perhaps?
@G6JPG2 жыл бұрын
@@mattmarzula Thanks for that; now you mention it, I can see the oval slot in this clip. And presumably that's what stops the player at the end, too. (I see in this clip the operator held the lever until that slot was out of the way at the start, which presumably has to be done so it doesn't stop immediately.)

If you think about it, this is digital. Each hole represents either a one or zero either a note is played or it isn’t there is no in between therefore with the rightcom and the correct spacing of each hole the music will be reproduced perfectly with no generational loss.

So Yale’s alma mater used the melody to Die Wacht am Rhein - called “Bright College Years” They’d play this in graduation, etc. but also there’s a huge carrillon in a big watchtower, and they’d play it quite often and you can hear it. Listening to his music box instantly brought me back to a hung over Sunday morning in New Haven
