Thanks for posting this even though Monica is my favorite good to see Martina with a big win in her late career. Monica just came off winning the Australian too. Last final before the stabbing.

Tjordful Monica had just won in Chicago a week before this

@@valentinodelpiero4861 yup she beat Martina, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. (I think?) there. Chicago was Martina's most winningest city, and it was there in 1992 when she broke Chris Evert's record of most singles titles of any man or woman. Martina has won Chicago 12x.

@@valentinodelpiero4861 you're welcome. I know because I live in Chicago and this tournament used be the only chance I could see my favorite pros playing in real life. My favorite one was when Jennifer Capriati upset Monica here in 1996, in the semis, 6-3, 6-3. Capriati I think hits the ball harder on the forehand side than Seles (though overall Seles maybe more consistent and accuracy).

one of the best navratilova's matches ever (evert?). In that winter 92/93 she found the way to adapt her game to the new generation's mixing it. and she ran, which is fondamental.
@emmanuelcannou24332 жыл бұрын
At that time Monica was the best player in the world, as said Steffi during the AO. So difficult to beat her. Martina, eventhought she was at the end of her career, had still the game to beat any top players she belonged to.

Seles and Navratilova is one of the best classic rivalries. The contrast in styles is as good or even better than with Evert of Graf. They played many amazing matches.

Two of the best women to ever strike a 🎾 and the contrast in styles pushed both of them to adapt there games…truly a golden era in tennis 🤩

Amazing win for Martina. She was enjoying a purple patch at this time, having beaten no. 2 Graf in Tokyo 2 weeks previous and losing to no. 1 Seles in 3 sets a week previous in Chicago. All at 36 y/o.

Yes, she was very 'on' during those weeks. Very remarkable.

Infatti Martina da quasi tutti i migliori esperti di tennis,me compreso,viene considerata la più forte di ogni epoca.
@francescobattisti99269 ай бұрын

I remember watching this match live. One of the most thrilling matches I've ever seen. Such a brilliant clash of styles.

Does the TV slow the ball down? Thats what it felt like watching her and Capriati play in Chicago. The balls were whizzing back and forth it was hard to track the ball in person.

Strange to think that Serena won her first slam just 5 years after Navratilova retired. And that though Graf and Navratilova had 13 years between them, they retired only 5 years apart.

True! And the age difference between Seles and Navratilova was the same as between Navratilova and the great Maria Bueno.

Martina using the "Linda Ferrando" method here to beat Monica. Slicing her backhand and hitting her forehand with more height. Giving Monica absolutely nothing to bite on from the baseline, while Martina waited for the opening to get to the net.

Monica’s only loss in 6 months since the US Open 1992. Martina snapped Monica’s 34 match winning streak. Then Monica was out of action for 2 months and then Hamburg…

Navratilova holds the record for most career wins over a world #1 with 18, coming against Evert (13), Seles (3, including this one) and Graf (2).

Beautiful match between two Champions that played with differents styles. Martina was good to break the game of Seles.

Love it when Martina applauds some of Seles’s extremely angled passing shots. At 83 lbs string tension on a 102 mid sized heavy racquet, Seles must have amazing strength that belies her unathletic looking frame.
@th82572 жыл бұрын
Also has to be mentioned that the racquet she used was exceptionally powerful, so she'd have to string somewhat tighter just to keep control. I think though she strung well beyond the manufacturer's recommended tension - when she lost to Linda ferrando at the us open in 1990, the frame of the racquet she was using had actually cracked - it looked very much like it was because she'd been stringing way too tightly for the frame to handle.
@quiddy2 жыл бұрын
@@th8257 actually I used to play with her racquet, the classic Yonex RQ-380. It's not exceptionally powerful. It has amazing heft, +12oz strung slightly headlight, but with good flex. Even though it gets wide at 3 and 9 oclock spots of the racquet, it also tapers off quite dramatically at the tip and at the throat. So it has both control and some power and amazing at counterpunching against hard hitters because the flex allows you to hit an offensive shot even when you're hitting the ball late ( flexible racquets have this unique advantage over stiff racquets). What she did play with starting 1999 was def more powerful and 130 sq inches. Hence her 103-lb tension.
@quiddy2 жыл бұрын
@@th8257 no way are you serious? Thats awesome to know about her loss to Linda Ferando.
@th8257 Жыл бұрын
@@quiddy there's a video of the ferrando match here on KZfaq and the thumb nail shows the top of her racquet had actually snapped. Billie Jean king was commentating and she also noticed that the racquet had split at the top. I don't know if Monica had actually noticed, or whether all her other racquets had snapped too! It was very strange of Monica to change her racquet so close to the US Open and no doubt a lot of $$$ was involved. I wonder if her loss to Ferrando was possibly because she was still experimenting with string tensions and hadn't got it right.
@quiddy Жыл бұрын
@@th8257 it was poor planning, you’re right, though she did win the Slims of Los Angeles with it, beating Mary Joe, Arantxa, and Navratilova. But if she didn’t notice that the frame had buckled, then she must not have fully understood the risks assoc to stringing too tightly.

i think this is the best navratilova's match. i hope the commentators realized it. the killer look back in her eyes is gorgeous. beautiful game. in that era. with that game going on. best fereder mode on.

Martina played quite well here. Far too often against Monica she would play erratic tennis with a slew of easy unforced errors.

Not much love lost between these two before the stabbing. Their matches were full of little glares, trying to slow each other down and attempts to get one step up psychologically. That glare Martina gives at 04:24 is typical. She's basically saying to Monica "You're joking aren't you? Questioning that call?"
